Joan Blondell, Estelle Winwood, Tallulah Bankhead

> Hi jdb1, Estelle Winwood was in a movie I watched as > a child she played a witch and was helping these guys > who were knights do you know that one ? Great thread > I like being able to know these names of these > actors who have been in movies but I do not know > their names She was in one called "The Magic Sword." She lived a very long life and was a "partner-in-crime" of the great Tallulah Bankhead. She was also a skilled comedienne. Remember "Hold Me-Touch Me" in the original "Producers?"

I can think of a few: W.C. Fields "The Old Fashioned Way", and at least one of the "Our Gang" episodes where the kids put on a play. I seem to remember Alfalfa with a big black moustache and a top hat and cape. I think maybe also a Betty Boop cartoon - I remember "You must pay the rent!" "But I can't pay the rent!" "Then marry me, or die!!" "I would rather marry you. Oh, I mean -- I would rather die!!!" That might have been from a Popeye cartoon or, since they were both Fleischer productions, both Popeye and Betty.

I'm glad you are enjoying this thread. I think I put both Alan Hale Sr. and Guy Kibbe photos on at some point, but unfortunately the photos have a habit of disappearing after a while. Their photos may also be posted on the Galllery of Stars thread. Here is a January 21 birthday: Jinx Falkenberg

> Just a guess, without checking anywhere yet: > Fred McMurray and William Frawley? Bill, I think Frawley was older than that. How about Burgess Meredith and Cesar Romero? They were both born in 1907,and both appeared on "Batman" in the 60s. -
Boy, hearing of Denny's death makes me feel real old, man. On the plus side, I suppose it's to his credit he made it this far, considering the abuse he gave to his body for so many years. And he managed to make a career for himself outside of the TMATP. And so it goes.

When I was young and we were watching TV, my mother would always confuse Dennis Weaver and Fritz Weaver, and so she would refer to both of them as "Dennis Fritz." That's how I still think of him. Happy birthday, Dennis Fritz.

I read in the NY Times this morning that the very likeable character actor Ron Carey died last Tuesday at the age of 71. He was an on-screen sweetie.

More Jan. 19 birthdays: Jean Stapleton Anthony Eisley Fritz Weaver

I watched Stan and Babe in some of the shorts I taped off of NYC Channel 9 centuries ago. And the ocean is still infatuated with sharks! Today's birthday (Jan. 19): Harry Davenport

Are you J. Carrol Naish?

> Thanks for the photo of "Babe" Hardy. Not many people > got to see him with his hair combed. I guess I'll > pull my tape of some of their shorts and we'll > celebrate. I'm right there with you, Chris. I've got a bottle of Asti in the fridge that will do nicely for the occasion. (We should go to Foo Young's for some -- you-know-what.)

>"Was Ernie Kovacs mentioned?" Not as a birthday boy; as far as I know, his birthday is Jan. 23.

Most taps were added later, sometimes by the dancer him/herself, and sometimes by another dancer. Gwen Verdon often told of how she helped to dub the footbeats for Gene Kelley's "Singin' in the Rain" number by dancing in a basin of water. I recall also hearing Ann Miller say that as a young dancer she dubbed in the taps for others in many movies. Matching the steps of another dancer you are watching on film must be quite a skill in itself.

January 18. Today's birthday: Oliver "Babe" Hardy

Dolores, it looks like a ferret, or maybe a hamster, to me. At first I thought it must be a scarf -- maybe it is. I think one of Withers' primary claims to fame in his time was that he eloped with a 17-year-old Loretta Young (he was 25). I think the marriage was subsequently annulled. That Loretta sure did get around. I think of his screen persona only as a tough guy - I don't think I ever saw him as a youngster, as in the photo I found. Now that you've seen and read about him, you'll probably notice him in every old movie you see. It's always that way.

One more for today: Mack Sennett

So . . . you decided not to go on the TCM boards for just one night, and look what happens! I hope you're satisfied. Now we have to wish Lynn a *belated* happy birthday. Uhm, uhm, UhM, uhm, uhm!!
