  1. "Clint Howard? ( Ron's Brother)" Not a bad choice, but no, I am not Clint Howard. Clint has had a prolific career, appearing in some 170 films and TV shows. And of course the clue "My brother is a producer and director of films and TV shows" would fit Clint, through his brother Ron Howard. But I don't find where Clint ever played a sailor in his career. More to the point, WHAT major success of his was inspired by his appearance on a New York stage? Last: I am looking for, but not finding, the name of a "former in-law" of Clint's who is in a hit TV series to this day. Nope, I'm not Clint Howard. Who am I? Dan N. http://www.silentfilmguide.com
  2. This should go without saying, but just in case there is any question.... I've said that "I appeared in more than 100 television programs...." That does not mean more than 100 different series, it means individual programs. I don't think ANYONE has appeared in 100 different series... have they? To summarize: 1. I appeared in more than 100 television programs, usually in comfortable, familiar settings. 2. In the movies, I appeared as a cowboy and, on one occasion, a sailor. 3. One of my biggest successes was inspired by an experience I had on a New York theater stage. 4. My brother is a producer and director of films and TV shows. 5. One of my former in-laws has been a TV star for decades, and is in a hit show right now. Who am I? Dan N. http://www.silentfilmguide.com
  3. Speaking of "bottlenecks": Over on the "Trivia Quiz for Beginners" thread, no one has posted since Jan. 10, FIVE DAYS AGO. Looks like someone came up with the right answer to the last question, then nobody chose to ask another. And over at "Famous lines from movies," Carol and Bill are playing Alphonse and Gaston and NOT taking a turn, each deferring to the other. There's no bottleneck HERE, at the "Do You Know Me?" thread. My question first went up on Jan. 11, and we've had healthy feedback almost every day since then. Dan N.
  4. "How about a more substantial clue to help break this bottleneck?" Okay, here's one: One of my former in-laws has been a TV star for decades, and is in a hit show right now. Who am I? Dan N.
  5. > A great little pre-code movie that rarely get > mentioned is MIDNIGHT MARY. Directed by William > Wellman, with a great cast headed by Loretta Young.... In my humble opinion, this is one of the stinkeroos of the pre-code era. When TCM scheduled a run of pre-codes last summer, I recorded "midnight mary" because I had heard some good things about it. But after watching it once -- maybe twice, to be sure I hadn't missed anything good (and I hadn't) -- I deleted my recording of it. Loretta Young had a reputation for being a good actress, but one who remained "above it all" when it came to earthy material. Didn't keep her from mothering a child out of wedlock, but never mind. She was never a good pre-code actress, because she refused to do the lusty, uninhibited types of roles that routinely went to such as Joan Blondell, Jean Harlow, and Dorothy Mackaill. Loretta, may she rest in peace, never made a movie I enjoyed watching. I guess we had different tastes. Dan N.
  6. What famous film noir ENDS with this line: "Well, I'm afraid you'll have to wake him, then." Remember, it's the last line of the film. I've quoted it verbatim. Dan N. http://www.silentfilmguide.com
  7. "Well if not Paul Fix, how about his son-in-law. Harry Carey, Jr.?" Wow... According to the IMDb, Harry Carey Jr. appeared in 148 movies/TV shows. I didn't know that. But, according to the same IMDb, I had almost 50 more appearances than that. Another hint: My brother is a producer and director of films and TV shows. Who am I? Dan N. http://www.silentfilmguide.com
  8. "What do these actors have in common: Freddie Bartholomew James MacArthur Lee Majors" They were all adopted as children. Dan N. http://www.silentfilmguide.com
  9. "Dan White?" Good choice. But the very prolific Dan White appeared in only about 80 TV shows, while I was in more than 100. Who am I? Dan N.
  10. Nope, I'm not Paul Fix. Paul made a lot of TV appearances, but not nearly as many as I did. Oh, and Judith: Let's say that when I appeared on that New York stage and was inspired to create one of my greatest successes: It was a reverse inspiration. Hope that makes everything clear. Dan N. http://www.silentfilmguide.com

  12. I think Judith's answer is as close as we are going to get. Leo Carrillo, Hume Cronyn, and Lorne Greene were all "pioneers" of a sort; they all co-starred in color TV series at a time when almost all of TV was in black and white. Leo Carrillo was in "The Cisco Kid," which began in 1950 and is described as "the first all-color television series." The IMDb comment that it was in Black & White and color is incorrect. "The Cisco Kid" was always in color. (They may be confusing it with a Cisco movie that was in b&w.) Hume Cronyn costarred (with Jessica Tandy) in "The Marriage" in 1954. It is described as "The first color prime time series on American network television." ("The Cisco Kid" was not a network show, it was produced -- lucratively -- for syndication.) Lorne Greene costarred in "Bonanza," which began running on NBC in 1959, and is described as "the first color prime time WESTERN series on American network television." "The Cisco Kid" was a western, but not on a network; "The Marriage" was on NBC, but it was not a western... but never mind. At a time when we all had black and white console TVs that we huddled around in the parlor, these shows were blazing the trail for a future in color. Judith, I do believe it is your turn. Dan N. http://www.silentfilmguide.com
  13. You are: Gina Lollobrigida. Dan N.
  14. "Leo Carillo played Pancho in The Cisco Kid with Duncan Renaldo. Lorne Greene was in Bonanza. They were both filmed westerns. Could Hume Cronyn have been in a "live" presentation with a western motif? CharlieT" Charlie, so far you are the closest to divining the correct answer. But you don't have it yet. What distinction connects these three actors: Leo Carrillo Hume Cronyn Lorne Greene Dan N.
  15. Well, I think the pretty blonde that Mose is asking about, is Ann Sothern. She appeared on TV in "Private Secretary," which ran five years. Her love interest in that series was played by Don Porter. Later, she launched "The Ann Sothern Show" (1958-61), in which her love interest was again Don Porter. Dan N. http://www.silentfilmguide.com
  16. ...and if it's not Peter Vaughan, it's probably: Eli Wallach. Dan N. http://www.silentfilmguide.com
  17. "Is it that they all did "live" TV dramas? (Or appeared in a particular live drama series?)" No, I think you're barking up the wrong scenario. If it makes any difference, I can tell you that, of the relevant TV shows in question, one was live, the other two were filmed. Dan N. http://www.silentfilmguide.com
  18. Judith, that sure sounds like Peter Vaughan. He has a 50-year acting career going, and his somewhat homely appearance made him a "natural" for heavies in his early films. But in recent decades, he has appeared in (at least) two Terry Gilliam movies which gave him somewhat lighter roles. Is this who you had in mind? Dan N.
  19. Yes, of course it's Jim Carrey. Either the latest questions here are getting lame, or our members are getting smarter. Bill answered the Jim Carrey question in 3 hrs. 24 min.; the Steve Cochran and Howard da Silva questions were answered in just over 2 hours each. Seriously: a well-formulated question should take longer than that to research. Your turn, Bill. Make us sweat, this time. Dan N. http://www.silentfilmguide.com
  20. In case anyone wants to ask a question... Judith, I think it's your turn if you want it. Dan N.
  21. "Does somebody want to take a turn let me know as I don't like to overstep anybody I would like to ask if thats okay." Go ahead and ask, Carol. I've already re-submitted my TV question, on the "My Favorite Trivia" thread. Dan N. http://www.silentfilmguide.com
  22. Do you know me? When I was a kid, my family was so poor we had to live in our van. I worked as a janitor for a while. Still, I was a straight A student in high school. Since I broke into show business, I?ve played every venue except Broadway. I?ve won my share of awards, including the Golden Globe, but as of this date (January 9, 2007) Oscar has yet to come calling. Who am I? Dan N.
  23. You are: Howard da Silva. Dan N.
  24. "They all fought in World War II?" If they all fought in World War II, good for them. But as I've said, this question is about television. All three of the named actors were in TV shows. But when and in what kind? There. Now I'm pretty sure you can all guess the answer. Dan N.
  25. Thanks for giving me the green light on this one, although it's a TELEVISION question. Nowadays most people do their viewing in front of TV sets anyway. The question concerns the following three actors: Leo Carrillo Hume Cronyn Lorne Greene N.B.: Please note, the connection that these three gentlemen share is NOT unique. Several other actors have shared the same connection. But "several" does not mean "many." In other words, it is a fairly notable characteristic, not shared by many. In fact, I daresay it is NOT shared by ANYONE who is acting today. What do the above three actors have in common? Dan N. http://www.silentfilmguide.com
