One of Harold Lloyd's most hilarious talkies, from 1932, *MOVIE CRAZY* also starring the luscious Constance Cummings!!! *THE MASK OF FU MANCHU*, yeah it was on recently on one of the AIF nights, but hey, it's Boris and Myrna getting wild and evil, gotta love it! *THE KID FROM SPAIN* had me in stitches, and *THE KENNEL MURDER CASE* is on a lot, but I can never get enough of this fine mystery, with a GREAT cast!!! And man...*THE LAST OF MRS. CHEYNEY* from 1937 ain't bad either!!! I came home late, so watching these on a recording as long as I can stay awake, but they'll give me many wonderful moments of pleasure. > > TCM---you guys rock, man! What he said!!! -
> {quote:title=johnbabe wrote:}{quote} > Why no Garbo under the stars this Summer? There are so many of her films that TCM never shows, Susan Lenox, Inspiration, Anna Christie, Conquest, Mysterious Lady, Romance, there are more than enough films of Ms. Garbo to fill a day in August, why not include her, she is only rated the greatest of them all! Maybe if she made westerns in the 50s and action films in the 70s.

Pick your 13 titles for the Ultimate Halloween Fest... 1. DRACULA (1931) 2. DR. JEKYLL & MR. HYDE (1932) 3. DOCTOR X (1932) 4. THE BLACK CAT (1934) 5. MARK OF THE VAMPIRE (1935) 6. HOUSE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1944) 7. VALLEY OF THE ZOMBIES (1946) 8. THE VAMPIRE (1957) 9. RETURN OF DRACULA (1958) 10. BRIDES OF DRACULA (1960) 11. BLACK SUNDAY (1960) 12. THE INNOCENTS (1961) 13. THE HAUNTING (1963)

Holy mackerel! Check out the title DIRIGIBLE. Can you say "phallic symbol?"!
-
BRIDES OF DRACULA has long been my favorite Hammer.
-
I've seen her in SECRET OF THE CHATEAU (Universal, 1934).
-
I suspect they are British films.

I attended a Halloween party in 1999 and a fellow showed up wet and covered with seaweed. I asked what was he supposed to be and he replied, "John Kennedy, Jr.".

If you go back to the original post that created this thread, it was clearly started to criticize the choice of Bill Maher as a guest programmer. That is not surprising. We are involved in a "culture war". However, even he would probably be surprised at the results. I rarely watch the guests (one exception was William Wellman's son) because I prefer B-movies, pre-Codes and TCM Underground. The guest programmers will (nearly) always choose films already available on DVD.

If Robert Osborne invites Sean Hannity to be a guest programmer, I'll marry Jake...on the Golden Gate Bridge...Paul Crouch will officiate...Bill O'Reilly will be best man...Ann Coulter will be flower girl...Anita Bryant will be the soloist. Unfortunately, we cannot invite Dickie Cheney, as he may shoot the doves when they are released.

I'd like to see Kathy Griffin. I bet she'd be a hoot!

> {quote:title=MattHelm wrote:}{quote} > I see nothing wrong about having anyone of any political persuasion being a guest programmer, nor would there be anything wrong with their choosing movies based on ideological reasons. TCM runs its own themes based on ideology at times. In fact, the majority of guest programmers have been liberal so it does TCM's audience a service to mix it up. There are conservatives on these boards who've shown a lot of knowledge and passion for movies that transcend ideological boundaries. God forbid a conservative guest chooses a movie with John Wayne, James Stewart, Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Barbara Stanwyck, Robert Montgomery, Claudette Colbert, Garry Cooper ... all Republicans. But I guess under PS's view, they weren't artists. > > PS, just because someone is against gay marriage doesn't mean they're against gays. Hannity, and other conservatives, unlike the majority of liberal commentators, journalists and groups, are the only ones speaking out about how gays and women are treated in the middle east. Gays are hanged for being gay under not just the Taliban, but everywhere from Iran to Saudi Arabia, but you don't hear gay groups saying anything. To compare an opposition to gay marriage to people who hang gays is just blind vitriol. If you can find anything that Hannity has said that is hateful toward gays, then please furnish it. > > Your own level of intolerance won't even allow for conservatives to be guest programmers on TCM. That may seem trivial compared to the gay marriage issue, but isn't it more Taliban-esqe to be as intolerant and censorial on trivial matters as you're being? When it gets to that level it's not so trivial anymore. Who cares who the guest programmers are as long as they choose movies that we want to watch? Don't let hate consume you. Thanks for the roll call of Republican celebrities of yore (but I'm not sure what the purpose was). It has long been rumored (for decades) that Barbara Stanwyck was a lesbian (or bisexual) and her marriage to Robert Taylor was for appearances only. This is well-known although I don't believe she ever confirmed it. Furthermore, being a Republican "back in the day" meant something different than it does post-Reagan. There was no religious right pulling the strings and gay rights, civil rights, reproductive rights and the environment weren't even on the table in those days. I like Stanwyck and the other celebs you mention (except John Wayne...only his appearances with Marlene Dietrich). Check out the book, "The Sewing Circle" (I think) on amazon.com.

Robert Osborne is gay. I certainly hope he wouldn't invite Sean Hannity to be a guest host. As far as tolerance goes, look what's happening in California. The religious right is circling the wagons to prevent marriage equality as they have always done. Taliban-esque.

People from both sides of the political spectrum are equally talented in picking bland movies. > > Be partisan all you want but don't assume people who might not agree with you are idiots. Assuming you are a conservative, you are aware of course that your ideology was hijacked and contaminated by the religious right over 20 years ago. I was completely apolitical until my mid-twenties (that coincided with Reagan's 2nd term) when I realized how much power and influence people like Jerry Falwell, Oral Roberts and Jim Bakker had. They were eventually overshadowed by the likes of Morton Downey, Jr., Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity. It is politely called a "culture war" or "red v. blue". Religious conservatives should more accurately be referred to as the American Taliban since they essentially serve the same purpose.

I would like to see all of her surviving films on TCM.
