  2. It would be interesting to know if Senator McCain ever voted to cut funding for the arts or Public Broadcasting.
  3. I'm OK with Bill Maher as a guest host, although I didn't see him. I would object, however, to conservatives like Sean Hannity or Cal Thomas. They undoubtedly would make bland selections or demand censorship. Screw 'em. Yes, I'm partisan. So what? Conservatives have no place in the world of art and cinema is art. They can watch NASCAR or Trinity Broadcasting or Fox News. Stay away from TCM. ;-)
  4. He's a smartass, for sure. But he's entertaining.
  5. And we cannot forget THE PHANTOM SPEAKS. This was very similar to Universal's BLACK FRIDAY. Both featured under-rated character actor Stanley Ridges.
  6. I'm really surprised it's not available on DVD.
  7. Any posters/lobby cards for TRICK FOR TRICK (Fox, 1933) starring Victor Jory, Ralph Morgan and Sally Blane???
  8. Pre-Code fans should be utilizing REQUEST A MOVIE to counter the ninnies who post there. Also, I've recommended writing letters to TCM in Atlanta.
  9. > {quote:title=mndean4709 wrote:}{quote} > Apparently ten were originally scheduled. It's rather ominous that of the films they removed from the schedule, most were precode. Most precodes they've shown this month are things like Rafter Romance, a precode without any real precode content (I know, it's common enough) and already shown on TCM this year. The only bright spot precode-wise was Mary Stevens, M.D. I hope that this is not a sign of a change of direction for TCM. It's been bad enough to hear facts misstated about Mr. Moto's Gamble during the chat session around the film. I watched the deterioration of AMC into a pathetic, commercial-interrupted channel of uselessness, and I hope it's not happening here as well. Far too many films from the '50s and later have been showing up on TCM (how many times do I need to see Billie?). If I want that stuff, I can easily get Movieplex. AMEN!!!
  10. I recall the last quarter of 2007 being exceptional. 2008 has not measured up. These are the problems (IMHO): -fewer B movies -fewer series films -fewer Silent Sundays (e.g., February & August) -fewer TCM Undergrounds (e.g., February & August) -fewer pre-Codes -the annual disappointment that is "31 Days of Oscar" (as if February isn't dreary enough!) -too many schedule changes (it's become an epidemic) -*too many post-1960s titles* -the continued absence of classic Universal & Paramount titles -Stars of the Month that lack imagination (e.g., Frank Sinatra)
  11. Republic made a handful of horrors, most notably THE LADY AND THE MONSTER, VALLEY OF THE ZOMBIES and THE VAMPIRE'S GHOST. These films have been off the radar for years.
  12. I'd like to see some "B" stars get Star of the Month... LARRY "BUSTER" CRABBE TOM NEAL PATRIC KNOWLES JACK HOLT KENT TAYLOR EVELYN ANKERS GAIL PATRICK FAY WRAY ANNE GWYNNE SALLY BLANE
  13. William B. Davidson, Russell Hicks, Selmer Jackson and Pierre Watkin were the Kings of Hollywood!
  14. John Carradine and J. Carroll Naish were in a s***load of movies.
  15. A number of popular stars were Paramount contract players. TCM would have to gain access to their Paramount titles in order to do them justice...I'm referring to Clara Bow, Nancy Carroll, Carole Lombard, Marlene Dietrich, Mae West, Claudette Colbert, Dorothy Lamour, Veronica Lake, Betty Hutton, Maurice Chevalier, Richard Arlen, Fredric March, W.C. Fields, Gary Cooper, George Raft, Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, Alan Ladd, et al.

That hag will never be chosen.

You been screaming it from a mountaintop like some kind of "Rushbot" since you came here. > Do you know why there is so much govt regulation of business? Because your greedy heroes have proved time and time again that their only loyalty is to a buck. They don't give a crap about you, me, the church, or this country, Captain Patriotism. > Their first "religion" is the dollar. > Right now it suits them to beholden a "religious right", be Republican. Would you believe they were "secular progressive" Democrats when they stole Federal Reserve? > You talk about sheep. Obviously you don't have any mirrors at home. Bravo! Why not put him on "ignore"? I did.
  18. LUPE VELEZ THELMA TODD GLENDA FARRELL NANCY CARROLL (w/ Paramount titles) ANN HARDING WHEELER & WOOLSEY RAMON NOVARRO JOHN GILBERT WILLIAM HAINES BELA LUGOSI (w/ Universal titles)
  19. Re: ALL IN THE FAMILY...I love the fact that Archie Bunker was played by a liberal! Truth be told, I was not a fan of the show. I thought all four of them were annoying!

Hence, sweatshops and child labor are just "part of life," which "market forces" will take care of when, and if, it sees fit. Such a nice, placid view of the universe. > > One can easily substitute "god" for "market forces" in the above, helping to make the argument that to conservatives, serving god and mammon, or making god and mammon interchangeable, is at the core of their most deeply-cherished beliefs. Well said. Nothing like god and market forces to keep people in their place. Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition!

It was a different time and a different war. I totally agree with that last sentence. However, war is war. And times being what they are, I don't look to war-themed films for entertainment.
  22. The classic Universals (1931-45) are the best. Other faves include DOCTOR X; I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE; THE BLACK SLEEP; BRIDES OF DRACULA; CURSE OF THE CRYING WOMAN; BLACK SUNDAY; THE INNOCENTS; THE HAUNTING.
  23. It's criminal that this is not yet on DVD!
  24. > {quote:title=almostranch wrote:}{quote} > *It's disrespectful that TCM isn't showing any WWII movies in remembrance of D-Day!* GOOD!!! War isn't something to be celebrated and besides we just went through this on Memorial Day.
