I think all these far ______ are nuts. Right or left. I really do. Good point. I used to think of myself as a centrist. However, during the last 8 years I've become a decidedly left-leaning one. Social equality, separation of church and state, the middle class and the environment are more important to me than corporate tax cuts, unjustified war/invasion and making millionaires out of the likes of Ann Coulter, Bill O'Reilly, Benny Hinn, Karl Rove and Jan Crouch.

TCM hit a home run with this tribute. Bravo!

THE LOCKET (RKO, 1946) is the latest casualty.

If Eastern Europe is exposed to our "reality" television series, they might rebuild the Berlin wall!

Thanks for THE COUNTESS OF MONTE CRISTO. I would kill for a DVD of it!

> {quote:title=OldPackard wrote:}{quote} > The 1930s and the "Depression" years were hard times for the United States. Many feel that we were close to complete social collapse. Unions and communism were one and the same to many people. With 30+ % of the population unemployed, families were torn apart and criminals were popular heros. You might read, or watch, John Steinbeck's *"The Grapes of Wrath"* Both versions were condemned as "Red Propaganda" by many, both in the press and in the pulpit. Hollywood has always had a pro-religious and politically liberal slant. Something that can be considered good or bad, dependent upon one's personal viewpoint. Good point. Certain Henry Fonda fans (the ones that call him "Hank") are probably having a heart attack!

Capitalism and Christianity (or any religion, for that matter) don't work for everyone. So it should come as no surprise that it is reflected in our culture (movies, literature, music, art, etc.).

I did not forget them. They are Marie Dressler titles.

I second the motion. THE CHEATERS (1945) is a Christmas-themed film from Republic (not Paramount) starring that exceptional character actor, Joseph Schildkraut.

This is being discussed elsewhere...see the "Horror" thread.

The October schedule will be released in another month. I'm scared already!!

More early sound Columbias, please (especially ATTORNEY FOR THE DEFENSE; PAROLE GIRL; FINAL EDITION; NIGHT CLUB LADY; THE CIRCUS QUEEN MURDER; BLACK MOON; THE NINTH GUEST).

Nancy Carroll was a big Paramount star of the early-talkie era. I hope TCM can get a hold of her Paramount titles (including Universal's THE KISS BEFORE THE MIRROR (1933) directed by James Whale). -
The film gained cult status via it's inclusion in William K. Everson's "Classics of the Horror Film". It may disappoint on initial viewing. How could it possibly live up to it's infamous reputation? Multiple viewings are required. Be advised the thick accents of three of the leads (Harry Earles, Olga Baclanova and Henry Victor) are a major detriment.

Actually, they ALL feature Glenda Farrell. June 30th is her birthday.

Yes, I'm so pleased to have it on DVD. A grear cast...especially Bramwell Fletcher from THE MUMMY!

Any film that does not glorify war but shows it for what it really is would get my vote. How about WESTFRONT 1918 (1930) ? -

Everyone Pick A Frank!!!!!!!

Evolution is only a theory (and a poor one at that!), yet is taught as a fact! Completely wrong to do that! I didn't say Bigfoot wasn't real, I only stated that my brother thinks he is real and is rather adamant about it! (Boy you do NOT want to get in to an argument with him!) > > > > But what does this have to do with Frank Sinatra??? > > > Nothing at all, but I didn't start the discussion! All I did was mention him (or excuse me it) after someone mentioned George Reeves (one thing kind of leads to another!) "Evolution is taught as gospel"...oh, the irony is rich!!! As for choosing a Frank, I'll pick the beloved cocktail weinie...with spicy mustard, of course. -
Love, love, love that CLAIRVOYANT poster!
