  1. February is dismal...the annual 31 Days of Oscar (despite February having only 28 days). TCM will maintain interest and enthusiasm by showing lots of Bs and pre-Codes; the continuation and promotion of TCM Underground and Silent Sundays; the acqusition of Universal & Paramount 30s & 40s titles; serials; more titles from Republic and Monogram; more B stars and charactor actors for SOTM and SUTS; more rarities from archives such as UCLA Film Archives, Library of Congress, Museum of Modern Art, etc.

  2. The film fell into obscurity no doubt because of its lack of name stars (Alan Mowbray, Florinne McKinney, Peggy Shannon). It wasn't included in Universal's Shock Theater television package in 1957 (other obscure non-horror titles were). It was made after the production code enforcement of mid-1934 and, therefore, lacks the sauciness of the novel. However, the special effects are said to be very good.

This from somebody who spells "music" with a "k"?

I couldn't agree more. Every year we must suffer through this. No B movies. No Silent Sundays. No TCM Underground. No serials. Yuck!

  5. More importantly, who will be SOTM in 2013? If Universal titles were available, we could have Maria Montez or Bela Lugosi or Evelyn Ankers or Deanna Durbin or Lon Chaney (Jr.) or Jeff Chandler.

If Paramount titles were available, we could have Nancy Carroll or W.C. Fields or George Raft or Richard Arlen or Clara Bow or Claudette Colbert.

What about Wheeler & Woolsey, Helen Twelvetrees, Ricardo Cortez, Richard Dix, Glenda Farrell, Laurel & Hardy, Ramon Novarro, John Gilbert, Wallace Beery, Leila Hyams, Richard Barthelmess, Thelma Todd.

How about Monogram Pictures as SOTM?

  7. NIGHT LIFE OF THE GODS (Universal, 1935). This is not a "lost" film, but a very rare one. It is based on Thorne Smith's comic-fantasy novel. Smith was also the author of TOPPER. The film was made after the Production Code went into effect, so the pre-code naughtiness of the novel is absent. The special effects (as you would expect from Universal) are supposedly quite good. Lack of star power has kept this one obscure.
