Not so similar a situation after all. This is not a life or death situation and no one is going to sue TCM over a film. But, since we are not privy to who the distributor/library is, TCM, by proxy, becomes the only whipping boy in town and it is their reputation that is on the line and one that will suffer as a result of doing business with a library that dosen't give a damn. TCM can avoid all this by acknowledging, through a disclaimer at the begining of each film, that it has no control over the films it shows and is not responsible for content. It's not that I blame them so much for showing a film that reeks of lousy quality control, it's that they ignore it and prefer to act as if the problem dosen't exist. That is unacceptable.

That's a lousy analogy. Those vendors deserve to be put out of business. No one in their right mind would or should ever do business with them again. Wouldn't you agree? Sellers, of I don't care what, don't have the right to lie, cheat, or steal. If TCM chooses not to do anything about it, it's their choice, and ultimately their responsibility. A quote from an old horror movie was "IF THE MONSTER KILLS, THE SCIENTIST HANGS". The vendor being the monster and TCM representing the scientist.

But, it was by no means a reflection on his acting ability or perceived lack thereof by some couch potato critics who prefer more "accomplished" actors like Jimmy Cagney and Humphrey Bogart. Please note, for fans of CAGNEY and BOGART, there is a difference between acting and hamming it up. Besides, acting ability, in film, is a dubious asset which pales in comparrison to box office receipts. Great acting talent was/is more important to a career on the stage then before the camera, otherwise movies would have all starred clones of JOHN BARRYMORE or his brother LIONEL. Imagine JOHN BARRYMORE as TARZAN, playing the character in the same style as JOHNNY WEISMULER. A great actor to be sure, but would you pay to go see it?

Remember, they have a reputation and a mission statement that they have to live up to and showing sub par product is not the way to do it. Perhaps if TCM withheld payment for films that are cut, have chopped off endings, or all around lousy copies, the distributors would take better care on their side. TCM should be the one calling the shots, not the distributors.

What was the deal with LOVE IS A RACKET? It was included, I'm assuming, because it is listed as a George Raft film, yet he wasn't in it. Dirty pool on the part of TCM? Weren't INTRIGUE, BLACK WIDOW, and OUTPOST IN MOROCCO also scheduled to be shown, or am I imagining things?

The only way you can have a film that isn't dated is if the cast is white, bald, nude, no make-up, body art or piercings, and sits around on an all white floor in a studio with an all white background, and dosen't say anything and there is no music or interaction with the outside world. But then again it would still be dated by the type of film stock or video used for the production. Just because you have a personal dislike for a commedian/performer or a comedian's shtick dosen't mean the comedian or his/her shtick is "dated". And, EVEN IF IT IS, "dated", by the way, is not a synonym for bad, except in the minds of opinionated people with an axe to grind.

He WAS FUNNY and folks liked him, they paid to see him. You don't think Hollywood was in the charity business do you? As far as dated, let me inform you, all films are dated.

I'd like to see something similar to the old AMC's SATURDAY MOVIE PALACE MEMORIES. Maybe even hosted by Bob Dorian himself. Each week coming from an old movie palace somewhere in the country they would show a short subject, cartoon, serial chapter, newsreel, main feature, and coming attractions. The main feature was usually a B picture like the JON HALL/MARIA MONTEZ films. Or, it can be similar to the old MATINEE AT THE BIJOU that made the rounds on PBS STATIONS. But, I would like to see MORE of the UNIVERSAL, REPUBLIC, AND COLUMBIA SERIALS, CHARLIE CHAN MR. MOTO EAST SIDE KIDS DEANA DURBIN UNIVERSAL Horror films SWORD AND SANDAL films Action/adventure films But please, none of the usual TCM bill of fare. No NORTH BY NORTHWEST, CASABLANCA, FROM HERE TO ETERNITY, or SINGIN IN THE RAIN.

It's almost Academy Award time when we'll get another 31 days of old "favorites" like NBNW, GWTW, FHTE, OTW, TWOO, SITR, AAIP, WSS, etc., etc., etc. I'd spell them out, but it might cause me to throw up all over my keyboard in disgust and someone is waiting to use this computer.

I see that THE CYCLOPS is scheduled for March 9 at 9:15am. Does anyone know if this will be the usual cut version that TCM shows or the restored version? Hopefully TCM still has enough time to make sure they get the restored print. If not, TCM should just forget it and show something else. -

And I did. Thank you Fred, Lori, and others for your kind sentiments, but that being said, speaking as a Jew I feel the need to correct, perhaps, a few misconceptions. First, while it is true that all Jews celebrate Hannukah in their own way, the fact of the matter is that to believing Jews, Hannukah is only a post Biblical festival and a very minor festival at that. Of much more importance to Jews are the HIGH HOLY days in late summer early fall, PASSOVER in MARCH/APRIL, and the most important day the SABBATH, which falls out from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday every weekend of the year. From the Jewish point of view, Hannukah sort of became the Jewish alternative to Christmas in the 50s and 60s in response to all the Christmas advertising for toys that appeared on the new medium of Television. The reason is obvious. From the Christian perspective Hanukkah, because of it's close proximity to Christmas, was always regarded as the Jewish Christmas, at least that was the understanding of my non Jewish friends and co-workers. So, while I am proud of Hannukah and I celebrate it, it is not the most important Jewish Holiday of the year. And, at least from a religious perspective, it is by no means as important as the religious significance of Christmas or for that matter Easter which ARE Christianitys' two Holiest days of the year.

Frankly, I think it's only a matter of time before we see TCM infomercials or maybe TCM Home Shopping segments. Wasn't TCM hawking toys from old Irwin Allen TV shows for awhile? What the heck did that have to do with classic old films?

The good old days, sigh, when free TV was worth it.
