I am not referring to Stars who worked exclusively at FOX. What I was getting at is that there were a lot of WARNERS, MGM, RKO, REPUBLIC, and UNITED ARTISITS stars that made films during the course of their careers at FOX, UNIVERSAL, COLUMBIA, or PARAMOUNT. It would be interesting when discussing these STARS careers on TCM to make mention of their body of work at those other studios and perhaps show a clip or still of those previously "lost" films. I say "lost" because they have been hitherto ignored by TCM in any retrospective or biography on their channel. I am not saying that it is all TCM's fault, but fans should know that the studios most represented on TCM were not the only studios in town.

don't know that TCM can't show any film they want at any time. But, I think what annoys a lot of fans is that TCM APPEARS to ignore alot of the films made at other studios. In most of the BIO DOCUMENTARIES made exclusively for TCM, by TCM, the subject's films at other studios like UNIVERSAL, PARAMOUNT, COLUMBIA, or FOX hardly, if at all, gets mentioned and if they are, they're quickly glossed over.

TCM does it on occasion for a star but one shouldn't expect, for example, John Wayne to get films played on his birthday every single year. If it is a special occasion, like Luise Rainer's 100th birthday, that's worthy enough for a day or night of the star's films. "

The excuse was always that TCM was unable to show these films. But now that TCM seems to be showing more Fox films more regularly, there is no reason why some of them cannot be showcased in this manner, other than time constraints. Many of the stars featured on TCM regularly seem to be SOTM, or SUTS all the time. I'm not hating, because I love these stars also, but it would be nice of some of the neglected Fox stars could get their day.
Or for that matter the UNIVERSAL, PARAMOUNT, and COLUMBIA stars. George Raft just had a "celebration" consisting of only 4 films.

As long as we're playing the game I'll make a few suggestions. How about the kinds of films that use to show up in the mid 80s on USA's COMMANDER USA's GROOVIE MOVIES and other local channels' weekly Horror programs in the 70s and 80s like New York's FRIGHT NIGHT, CHILLER THEATRE, and CREATURE FEATURES, for example:
1. MEXICAN HORROR FILMS - ANY AND ALL OF THEM
2. ITALIAN VAMPIRE MOVIES
a. PLAYGIRLS AND THE VAMPIRE
b. SLAUGHTER OF THE VAMPIRES
c. THE VAMPIRE AND THE BALLERINA
3. DUNGEON OF HARROW
4. LEMORA LADY DRACULA
5. THE WITCH
6. CHILDREN SHOULDN'T PLAY WITH DEAD THINGS
7. THE CHILDREN
8. DON'T LOOK IN THE BASEMENT
9. THE VIDEO DEAD
10. THE UNDEAD
THERE'S MORE THEN ENOUGH STUFF TO KEEP TCM UNDERGROUND GOING STRONG FOR YEARS.

BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN would more likely wind up as a TCM UNDERGROUND programmer then an ESSENTIAL. TCM, in my opinion, still appears to regard HORROR films, even the classic ones, as mainly Halloween fare or akin to the other sub par film drek that turns up on UNDERGROUND.
-
I'm a little confused about TCM Underground. What kind of movies would classify as a TCM Underground programmer? Horror, Cult, Camp, Just plain bad, Sexploitation, Blaxploitation, Sword and Sandal, Comedies, Silents, or all of the above and more???
-
Listen to them, CHILDREN OF THE NIGHT, what music they make.
Bela Lugosi (DRACULA 1931)

Who can forget this closing line from Charlton Heston at the end of PLANET OF THE APES (1968)
"I'M HOME. I'VE BEEN HERE ALL THE TIME. UGHHHHH YOU BLEW IT UP. DAMN YOU, GOD DAMN YOU ALL TO HELL."

I would like to see a restored, pristine clear copy of GLORIFYING THE AMERICAN GIRL turn up on TCM and later on a pressed DVD. It is a classic 1929 musical film that was produced by Florenz Ziegfeld that highlights Ziegfeld Follies performers. It would make an excellant double feature with 1929's BROADWAY MELODY. What do you think?
-
1. ISLAND OF LOST SOULS (1933) because my VHS COPY is getting worn out from constant replaying.
2. LIGHTS OF NEW YORK (1928) because of it's significance as the first all-talking feature film and Gangster film.
3. THE SECRET SIX (1931) because I love Gangster films.
4. BEAST OF THE CITY (1932) I know it's available through Warner Archive, but on a DVD-R. I want a pressed DVD with extras.
5. SECRET OF THE BLUE ROOM (1933) a "lost" Universal that should see the light of day, besides it has Lionel Atwill and Gloria Stuart in it's cast. Need I say more?
-
How would you rate the Gangster Characters portrayed by the four top Warner's Gangster stars ROBINSON, CAGNEY, BOGART, and RAFT in the following categories?
TOUGH GUY
WISE GUY
JUST PLAIN NASTY
YELLOW RAT
SYMPATHETIC
REALISTIC PORTRAYAL
BOSS or HOOD
If you would like to add any other Warner actors that portrayed Gangsters feel free to do so.

Don't know if anyone is still paying attention to this thread, but here's my two cents worth. This is a classic movie channel. I come here because I want to watch classic movies. I don't care if there are elements in the films that are perceived as racist by some people who have nothing better to do with their time then look for "issues". If you don't like the films or their content then by all means turn the channel, no one is forcing you to watch. But, don't come here making accusations about "RACISIM" in these films. That is your personal interpretation and not a fact. Don't ruin this channel.

> Since both Cantor and Jolson performed at least once in blackface in each of the films, it's very likely that TCM is nervous about running them.
Yes, I'm suspicious that's the reason. However, TCM has showed other films in the past that could be construed as "racist" by some thin skinned individuals looking to create a situation where none exists. These films are classics and deserve to get screened on TCM. If AMC could show all the old Cantor films, once upon a time, then there's no reason why TCM can't follow suit. I hope TCM is not running scared like the FOX Movie Channel which gave into pressure from some Asian American groups and pulled CHARLIE CHAN films from their station.
-
I'm not sure if these films fall under the comedy or musical category, but I miss the EDDIE CANTOR and AL JOLSON films. Obviously there was alot of singing in these films, but there was also alot of comedy. Why haven't more of these films turned up on TCM?

I take it that Leslie Nielsen is no longer the host?

Unfortunatley, this is one of the Universals that was never shown on AMC. Generaly speaking, these type of programmers, if they were shown at all, would have shown up in October during AMC's Monsterfest, but AMC very rarely screened any Universal mystery films, especially off season. AMC was very big on ABBOTT and COSTELLO, DEANNA DURBIN, the MARIA MONTEZ/JON HALL films, and of course the 1st tier UNIVERSAL MONSTER FLICKS, but the rarer stuff was very rarely shown if at all. I think time is playing tricks with our memories of AMC and while it was a much better channel way back when, then the crappy channel it has morphed into, it did not show every classic Universal film..

So film history has deemed true, but I'm sure we can all boast to having a certain amount of hindsight. At the time, however, George made certain choices that, irrespective of hindsight, were honestly made based upon whatever reasons he had for making them. The fact that the "choice" roles he turned down were in pictures that became "classics" is purely a matter of luck, or in George's case the toss of a coin. If the films were flops he would have been regarded as making the right choice, but I guess history has already been written and rendered it's unforgiving verdict. Happily, George's fans are not as judgemental or unforgiving as history.

And THE VAMPIRE'S GHOST. Are there enough REPUBLIC HORRORS for a box set, I wonder?

I suppose anything George Raft is better then nothing George Raft, but seriously, four measly movies? Why not a whole day of George Raft films? Where is RACE STREET, JOHNNY ALLEGRO, OUTPOST IN MORACO, to name a few. Then there are the WARNER TEAM-UP films, the UNIVERSALS, and his PARAMOUNTS to choose from. George keeps getting the short end of the Raft, or stick, so it seems.

I don't know if you're being serious or sarcastic, but I did like Bob Dorian on the old AMC and was wondering if there was any truth to the story that he wasn't as familiar with classic films as AMC led people to believe that he was? I am assuming that Robert Osborne is a bonified expert, even though I have found a few errors in the past that caused me to raise my eyebrows in disbelief.
-
This is just a general question and I don't want to mention specific people, but do all the Guest Hosts know what they are talking about or is it just another gig for them and they are speaking from scripts prepared by the TCM staff? It does seem, at times, that some of the people chosen to be guest hosts are definitely rehersed, and possibly are not as well versed with the films they have chosen as we are led to believe. Maybe it's just my Cynical nature, but I wanted to know if anyone else feels the same way I do.

Funny you found the time to check out the tcm message board. Was that before you paid your bills, or before you left for work?

Boris Karloff is also in this film and is billed as "THE MESMERIST".

I am also a fan and feel that she was too hasty in calling it quits when she did. I am certain that she would have eventually wound up at MGM or FOX and would have had an excellant future there in their great musicals of the 50s.
A side question, I own all of her films that were released on VHS by UNIVERSAL. Were there any more of her films that Universal never released on VHS or DVD?
