  1. I agree that Maureen O'Hara was a take charge type of woman but in the scenes that required the contrary she had expressive looks of sheer tenderness.
  2. I love John Wayne but missed the double feature yesterday. You mentioned all of my favorite JW films.
  3. Well, that sounds like a must see to me........I like roles where women can fend for themselves and don't take crap from anyone. In regards to "Valley of Decision", was it me or were there an awful lot of accents going on there?
  4. When I read the previous postings I was already thinking of both of the "That's Entertainments",Is "Life goes to the Movies" comparable with them? If so It's a must see for me.
  5. Two people who quickly came to my mind are Lauren Bacall, and John Garfield.
  6. That was the first time I saw it and I really liked it although I had a hard time watching Greer Garson play a maid.I have always liked her and we got a good look at her in glorious black and white. As for Gregory Peck , smooth like always,he was the youngest I've seen him.Lionel Barrymore was immaculate as always, I expect nothing less from him.I to, was, in and out of that movie, I was cooking dinner.I need to see it again uninterrupted. Cagney69......Charming is a great description for the classics.
  7. My philosophy is that if you can't say something good then don't say anything.I think that Aaron Spelling was an excellent producer. His body of work is amazing! I doubt there is anyone who can compete w/ him now or for a long time to come. The man had it on them all. For someone who grew up poor he had to do something right to be rich many times over.He was a serious man who lived in a town with ruthless people and constant scandal yet he managed to live scandal free. I think that we should show some respect in moments like this, it's not a lot to ask.
  8. Did you happen to see "The Valley of Decision" yesterday on TCM (of course)?
  9. I'm so glad to see you on, it was pretty lonesome here for a while.I guess you're a night owl like me.I blame it on my hormones, what's your excuse?HA!
  10. This is a good subject: Here is my contribution; FEMALES: Lauren Bacall,Eartha Kitt,Rita Moreno, Jane Wyman,Jill St.John,Kate Hepburn,Joanne Woodward . MALES; Cary Grant (like many I chose him!),Paul Newman, Robert Redford,Robert DeNiro,Sean Connery,Roddy McDowell,Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly,James Stewart.
  11. Thank you for your post. I love old movies because they bring back the importance of values that we seem to lack today. As you said, you watch them for the nostalgia, that's perfect. I see in them the wonder and questions and hopes that I had in my youth when I shared them w/ my Mom.I see the world in the way I saw it back then when anything seemed possible. I love the black and white films, they are special to me.
  12. I've been reading this thread for a few days but haven't contributed anything because I can never remember first scenes but now that I read yours it would be my choice, Judy Garland/cast in "Meet me in St. Louis" it captures small town America preparing for family festivities.I love it and you captured it well.
  13. Yes! Sean Connery, I can't believe I forgot to mention him in the first place. Not only is his voice distinctive it's sexy just like him. Lauren Bacall was also a great choice. She has an incomparable voice, no wonder they use it for commercials, it's distinguished and classy, which translates to quality How about.......John Wayne, Dean Martin,Chill Wills, Slim Pickens,Walter Brennan, and Lionel,Ethel,Drew Barrymore?
  14. You have me cracking up about the crying comment about June, as much as I defended her earlier, I realize that she sure was a crier. Some actresses are weepier than others.
  15. I need to know if you could recommend just one for me to purchase to add to my collection which would that one be?
  16. What I liked about Martha Raye is her great ability to make people laugh, I smile when I think about her. Eve Arden was a very tall, deep-voiced person who seemed to carry herself well. She always played a best friend, someone who knew what she wanted and was doing.
  17. You are so right Garbomaniac, I don't think I'll be able to stay online, I think I have a problem w/ my computer. It's @ it again. I've seen Butterfly McQueen mentioned, wasn't she the one who played Prissy in GWTW? If so that was a great choice!
  18. When I think about it, there are similarities in both Stanwyck's and Joan Crawford's voices.
  19. Wow! I forgot about Lee J. Cobb,Thelma Ritter, Gregory Peck, these are some good ones. What about Sir Alec Guiness,Humphrey Bogart,Jack Lemmon?Does anybody agree w/ these?
  20. Another good pairing, I'm on a roll here, Natalie Wood/Warren Beatty in Splendor in the Grass.....Elizabeth Taylor/Rock Hudson in Giant.
  21. That was definitely a moment of all screen moments when Tracy made those comments to his beloved Hepburn. It spoke of what the movie was about. But what about Merle Oberon and Lawrence Olivier in Wuthering Heights, now that was another great pairing.
  22. I don't know if these are the 'funniest' but they certainly are funny,Pillow Talk and, once again I mention, Move Over Darling.
  23. Check for both Arden and Raye....they could also be put in my thread of distinctive voices, right?
  24. I've been shut off for 30 , it's very annoying, will close for today.......Night-night.
  25. Well, bless my mother's heart!! She always was a know-it-all in the classic movie dept.Which movie should I see from here?
