Actors/Actresses behind the voice.....
cinemabuff64 replied to cinemabuff64's topic in General Discussions
Gee, it's kind of lonely on the forum tonight, is it not? I was glad to see your reply, though you did not answer....What will be your contribution to my thread? -
Both Garbomaniac and I decided that we might get a little life going from this thread, we're a little tired of the same ones all the time.......... Which actor/actress do you remember as having a distinctive voice either for being a nice or interesting voice or an annoying voice. We'll start off w/ two distinctive (nice)voices; Walter Pidgeon and James Stewart.
-
Well, I've seen bits and pieces of both "Camille", and "Anna Karenina", the movies my Mom was addicted to when I was a child,to tell you the truth my mother looks a lot like Greta Garbo.
-
Garbomaniac, I couldn't have said it w/ more eloquence when you mentioned that we should love the actors/actresses for who they were. I happen to think that June Allison was an entertaining actress. It's clear that she wasn't a looker but she was an endearing presence on screen, someone we could trust, she was any and all of us, the typical American female next door.I liked her the most when paired w/ Van Johnson. I sure hope that we're not judging people for their looks because that would be an injustice, then we would have to include Bogart (don't take personally, I loved him),Victor Mature,Van Johnson,Tony Randall, get what I'm trying to say?

I kind of feel lost on the threads tonight, or I'm just a little quiet tonight. For some reason it took me a while to actually post something. As far as GG goes I unfortunately haven't seen many of her films though I do like her acting skills and screen presence. She was something to look at. As far as Walter Pidgeon goes, he fits in on the group of actors/actresses w/ very distinctive voices. His was masculine and eloquent. Another actor w/ a distinctive voice: James Stewart, you could close your eyes and know who the actor was behind the voice Hey, should we make this the subject of a new thread? It's certainly different than the others.

I not only agree w/ what you say, I applaud it.Classic to me is something that should always be remembered as an example for all that follows. Not only does that include Jeannette and Nelson, Fred and Ginger,Gable and Harlow but Powell and Loy, Hepburn and Tracy, even Doris Day and Rock Hudson (I know some will disagree on this one), are you following the flow here? in no way or form does Rodney Dangerfield even begin to fit in with the likes of these......So please leave Caddyshack for that other supposed channel for classic movies that is slowly turning into a 70's nad 80's movie channel.

Larry's Classic Star Reminiscences
cinemabuff64 replied to vecchiolarry's topic in General Discussions
Larry, This thread has me very interested.Seeing as how I am new to the forum I guess I need to be updated a little......How is it that you have such fabulous stories and know or knew so many famous people? Keep the good stories rolling! -
Thank you for your help!Night-night sleep tight, It's past my bedtime, sweet dreams to all.

I think that August is pretty rounded out for all of our varied preferences.Remember we all have different tastes. I happen to like Walter Matthau, Walter Pidgeon, Deborah Kerr, William Powell.I'm excited about Ethel Barrymore,Susan Hayward,Jean Simmons. I didn't look at the whole month just the first few days but I like the schedule for August.

Am I correct in thinking that I can more than likely purchase this movie in DVD? Sounds like one I would want to add to my collection.

TCM Progammer: Lamour, Sidney & Goddard

I agree w/ you Garbomaniac, Ray Milland was a bland actor to me, he always looked as though he were in pain. -

Hey! What's wrong w/ the 'Road' movies? I happen to find them very entertaining, even my smaller son enjoys them.On the other hand I must admit that I haven't really seen Dorothy Lamour in any movie besides a 'Road' movie so maybe that will be my treat if they do bring some of her other movies. I enjoy Carole Lombard so that will be my treat in August, can't wait! -
I remember when I was a young girl reading about a whole flock of reporters wanting to get a story or photo of Ms. Garbo and the couple of pics I did manage to see she was well covered with a turtle neck and a hat and sunglasses. I read how she was a recluse, refusing any contact with anyone.I thought that was a shame because I always found her so classy and refined. It must have been a sad life. What was her story? Did she ever marry or have children?

the heirs of old hollywood films..what if???/
cinemabuff64 replied to gigi4's topic in General Discussions
A lot of the respect and idolatry have faded.Used to be a studio would protect their 'stars' from bad publicity, unlike today. The studios knew that their stars had to be people to be looked up on.Now the ones who get all of the publicity are the deadbeats who are either going into rehab or getting out of it,what knid of example is that?Though it's definitely true that stars are only human like us, it's was better to pretend that they were on a level higher than we where we could live vicariously through them. -
How did you all get into classic movies what is you story?
cinemabuff64 replied to inglis's topic in General Discussions
It seems that this thread will have longevity.I never tire of reading each and every story.I'm glad that your marriage has lasted.I seemed to do better on my own when I was younger, but now that I am stable I can't find the right one.I know what I deserve and I won't settle for less.Compatibility is a big factor in any lengthy relationship and it seems you have just that. As for old movies, I'll always be addicted to them. -

Inglis: Madame X was on the other night and I cried my eyes out, like I do every time I see it. Your stories are very touching.Classics definitely strengthened the bonds of every family back in the day.I'm not much for modern technology but thank God for cable TV and TCM so we can appreciate all the classics and reminisce, not to mention the fact that we can pass it all down to our children. -
What about Frank Capra movies?

See what I mean?! CORRECTION: HURRY, before I get corrected!!

Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't forums for entertainment purposes?I'm back in college after 25 yrs. (an English as a second language major),I don't think it's a big deal if someone, in typing quickly, makes a typo-give us a break!Sometimes I'm on here, after waiting for my turn (a one computer household) to get on, and I'm either in a huury to get a word in or have so much going on around me that I'm good to get a couple of sentences in.

Who's the most prettiest actress of classic Hollywood?
cinemabuff64 replied to msladysoul's topic in General Discussions
You obviously have a thing for redheads. What about Maureen O'Hara?. I forgot about Eleanor Parker, she was pretty, classy and sly, I always liked the roles she portrayed. She didn't take crap from anybody. -

Vivien Leigh was both adorable and ballsy at the same time in GWTW.I always found Irenne Dunne to be very pretty ,a clean, classy lady.Others I admire are; Hedy Lamarr, Carole Lombard ,(women, like men, are sexier when they have a sense of humor), Maureen O'Hara is beautiful and sweet. -
Though I have seen other stars her age in better shape we have to realize that 'La Liz' has had health problems troubling her for years and years, she's been on the brink of death more times than we can remember.Liz has also suffered from severe bouts of depression, not to mention a tumultuous love life.I think that she did look good on Larry King Live and she had her wits about her,I think she was brave to go there and address everyone like she did, you can see that it is uncomfortable for her to get around. Her work for the aids foundation is admirable and astounding.

Oleg Cassini was also famous for not only dressing Grace Kelly but for being engaged to her.He was a great designer.
-
When I was a child I found Robert Mitchum to be ugly but now as an adult I find him manly and strong. He had a very distinctive voice.

"The Apartment", a great movie with the great talents of Shirley MacLaine and Jack Lemmon, a must see movie.
