For some reason the movie "The Imitation of Life", Claudette Colbert version comes to my mind.Where I grew up there was a lot of racism, I was never a racist but my parents certainly were and I used to argue w/ them about how bad that was and how I didn't want to be a part of it.One night my mother and I saw that movie and we both cried, that moment I knew that my mother had the ability to change. I came to the conclusion that maybe her idea of racism was just an attitude passed down from generation to generation.

I think I remember that movie but only vaguely, weren't they already in their prime when they did this movie? It seems like I see them walking along a river, maybe somewhere in either Italy or France, right? They might have even gone down the river in a boat.

CEE: Thank you for the information I glanced over it and I feel it will be very helpful. If you can come up w/ your topfive D.M. movies let me know.THANKS!

I agree w/ you about Ms.Hepburn, she was a very charming,well-read person, due to the same she always had plenty to talk about. She was considered very liberal for women of her time and she didn't give a darn what people thought about her. That would amke for some great conversation to accompany any meal.

Seems like I vaguely remember his name being mentioned but I really don't know anything about him.............can you give us some info.?

Van Heflin did indeed win an oscar for his portrayal in the movie "Johnny Eager" back in 1942.The cast is a who's who of Hollywood, Robert Taylor, Lana Turner and Robert Sterling.

Looks like we have another night owl in the group.........
I would love to give you a couple of titles, "Back Door to Heaven",1939,"Madame Bovary", the excellent 1949 version which also happens to include Louis Jourdan in the cast......there are three versions of this movie, one before this one in 1934 and another after this one from 1991.My favorite is the 1949 version starring the beautiful Jennifer Jones. She is always a delight to watch.

I, like you, have recently dicovered the message board and I feel like I finally can interact w/ people who have the same passion and insight as I do about the classics and the golden era of Hollywood.I have seen my fair share of inspirational movies but give me a chance to think and I'll come up w/ a couple of good ones.

Though I laughed when I read about Old Yeller and Bambi, it's because I always thought that those movies are too sad for childrens movies and everyone thinks I over-react. Disney has several movies where one or the other parent is lost, Bambi, Lion King....Tell me if I've forgotten any.

Jack (If I may take the liberty to call you by your first name):
I'm afraid that I have never heard of Renato Di Rossi, please tell me more and who, more or less, does he look like? About Rossano Brazzi, I just knew that someone would find him delectable!
-
Van Heflin and Fred MacMurray , those are my two choices.
-
John Garfield, manly but at the same time considerate, down to earth. How old Hollywood are we looking for here? I love Cary Grant, Louis Jordan, Omar Shariff,Robert Redford,Rossano Brazzi,Rock Hudson (who cares about his preference!).William Powell had a certain appeal.I almost forgot! Charles Boyer!!!

Joaquin Phoenix has a lot of potential, I saw Walk the Line, I liked it but thought it would be better.I feel that Joaquin should definitely have received an award for his participation in that film.He is one of the best of his generation.I wouldn't be surprised if he manages to go home with a gold statuette within the next 5 yrs.

I agree that King Kong was an exceptional production, the director and screenwriter really managed to take King Kong where he had never been before. He was so lovable and protective.Peter Jackson is definitely a master.I, like you, have a fondness for movies set in the past, except for the medieval period. You should see Casanova, I really liked it.

They certainly don't make 'em like Cary Grant anymore. He is one of my favorite actors.I don't think I've ever seen a bad movie w/ him in it.He was the epitome of suave and debonaire.

I first starting watching classics as a child back in the late sixties, early seventies.Back then there were only maybe three or four channels to choose from unlike the many we have today. These are the only good memories I have where I actually bonded w/ my Mom.She would fill me in on the actors, their personal info. who was with who....She knew them all,her father used to own the only theatre in the small town she grew up in so she used to spend all her free time there as a child.I became fascinated and it became a form of escape in my troubled childhood. Some of the first movies I remember are; The Imitation of Life, both versions (Claudette Colbert, Lana Turner), Madame X, Splendor in the Grass,Dark Victory, Rebecca, Wuthering Heights and many, many more.

Thanks for your recommendations and info.Tell me more about the La Jolla Playhouse, obviously it must be located in California.About Mel Ferrer, isn't he the one who was married to another great actress, Audrey Hepburn?

CEE: I must sat I have to agree with you on Dorothy McGuire and Richard Egan being the hottest couple in "A Summer Place". The look in their eyes spoke a thousand words, but remember where their characters were in the movie; both had suffered, she at the hands of an alcoholic husband and he (help me w/ this one, was he divorced or a widower?) . Sandra Dee and Troy Donahue played to a tee what they were, innocent, virginal teens dealing with puppy loved turned into adolescent lust. When I refer to D. M. not beeing a looker I mean that her looks, although unique, were not along the lines of, Elizabeth Taylor's or other women popular back then.

Slim Pickens, Wallace Beery, Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney,Ethel Barrymore, David Niven, etc.

One of the first movies I saw with Dorothy McGuire in it was "A Summer Place", a very good movie. What I like about her is her serene, almost maternal presence, if she is in a movie you know that she will be in a role where her character will do what is right. She wasn't a looker but she sure made up for it in her acting.
Can any of you recommend any other movies she was in that were good?I know I've seen other movies with her in it but their names have escaped me. Thanks!

This is my take on some of the movies you mentioned:
[MOVIES I AGREE WITH]:Gosford Park,Shipping News, Y Tu Mama Tambien,(isn't this a Pedro Almodovar movie?),Far From Heaven (I like almost anything with Julianne Moore, Rent Prize winner from Defiance,Ohio..rented it last wk. really liked it),In America (very good in actuation and direction, not to mention screenplay), Pieces of April (gotta love a good indie),In Her Shoes (loved MacLaine), Lost in Translation(
Kudos to Coppola)
]MOVIES I DISAGREE WITH:American Beauty (won that yr. @ Academy Awards, which other movie was really good that was nominated? Can't remember) Brokeback Mountain (sorry,it was slow and lengthy although great in actuation)
SPEAKING OF NOMINATED MOVIES:
I noticed @ least three in your list that I remember to have been nominated for Golden Globes, Oscars, you name it;Gods and Monsters, Requiem for a Dream, and most recently,Junebug and Transamerica.(Both indie?),Capote,Sideways.
MOVIES I WOULD LIKE TO SEE ON YOUR LIST:
Transamerica,Junebug,Capote,Sideways,Central Station, Sweet and Lowdown

One of the best recent films I've seen is "An Unfinished Life",with Robert Redford, Morgan Freeman, and J.Lo.I originally rented it on DVD for the two male actors but it was a good all around movie, directed by Lasse Hallstrom who did "Cold Mountain".
-
What about Fred Astaire and Audrey Hepburn in the movie "Funny Face"?
-
Bette Davis, Katharine Hepburn,Carole Lombard,Joan Crawford, Elizabeth Taylor
Spencer Tracy,John Garfield,Gary Cooper,etc.

Oddly Appealing

Oh yeah! That is the movie where the old man travels on a tractor to see his brother. If I'm not mistaken, Sissy Spacek plays his daughter or something, right?
