  1. Twist Around the Clock (1961) [They're all doing the twist at the end.] Next: Explosion
  2. "O God Our Help in Ages Past" -- Tom Jones (1963) Next: A hymn not sung in a place of worship or on the Titanic
  3. "Keep the Home Fires Burning" -- Oh! What a Lovely War (1969) Next: Another World War I song used in a movie (obviously)
  4. Hattie McDaniel was in Blonde Venus with Bess Flowers.
  5. When I was a kid, my grandmother used to take my cousins and me to Radio City Music Hall. The first time she took us, as I recall, was to see the Easter show, which, in addition to the Rockettes, included the movie Merry Andrew with Danny Kaye.
  6. "Madame I Like Your Crepe Suzettes" -- sung by Red Skelton in DuBarry Was a Lady (1943) Next: Love song sung by lovers (or by one of them) who don't end up together in the film
  7. Well done Magoo! I phrased that last bit about Welles badly. I was also going to throw in the obscure connection between Arkadin and The Third Man. And, as a later clue, I might have added that the husband appeared in a film in which he portrayed a famous American inventor (Robert Fulton), but I didn't need to get that far. Your thread.
  8. He was a dashing actor who played several leads and many supporting roles. One important supporting role (his character's surname was in the film title) was in the first of a series of films in which a famous actor played a hugely famous fictional character. Husband also appeared as the lead in a British television series which was very popular in the United States, playing a famous fictional character who had been the subject of a hugely popular Hollywood film in the 1930s. She was in a few swashbucklers and also appeared with one of the most famous directors in a film (not a swashbuckler) in which he (the director) also acted. This was the first of two marriages for both husband and wife. Nine years after their divorce, both married again. She married an actor who appeared in a more famous film with that actor/director I mentioned. Name the couple, and, if you're so inclined, mention the two characters that the husband played, that I alluded to. Also, for extra credit, the actor/director the wife worked with who later worked (on one of the most famous films ever) with her second husband, whom you may also name.
  9. Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice (1969) A Christmas Carol (1938)
  10. Great clues, and you were very generous with them! Joel McCrea and Frances Dee She was in An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser.
  11. I like the challenge of this thread. Some of the other simpler threads are fun but not at all challenging for people who know about movies and/or like to do the research (without complaining). It's not collegial to give someone an order like "Don't do that again." So, Magoo, please don't do that again!
  12. I loved his puns, there were always food and restaurant related jokes on his show. I remember he once opened a cookbook and said, "I'd love to make this dish, eggs paganini." Then someone else looked at the book and said, "That's eggs, page nine." Another time, he was playing an Arab sheik called "El Morocco." Someone knocked on the door of his tent. Danny came out in his robes and said, "Who dares to come to El Morocco without a reservation?"
  13. The Alamo (1960) Wings (1927) --filmed in San Antonio
  14. \ Lavender, I tried to PM you but you were full up. I accidentally pm'd your name without the 19 first, that went, but I guess it's not yours.
  15. Barbara Rush (who turned 94 last month) was in The Young Philadelphians with Billie Burke.
  16. Well done Lavender. The father was Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree, but we won't quibble. The Cats song that mentions him is "Gus the Theatre Cat:" -- "He once was a cat of the highest degree, he has acted with Irving, he's acted with Tree..." Diana Wynyard was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar for Cavalcade. (She was the first British actress to be nominated for a Best Actress Oscar). The film that she was in that was remade into a more famous Hollywood version was Gaslight. And the thread is yours!
  17. The Godzilla scene in Austin Powers in Goldmember is hilarious.
  18. He directed several famous films, winning an Oscar for one of them. She was nominated for an Oscar. His nephew was a well known actor. The nephew's name offers a clue to the director's Oscar-winning film.
  19. Call Northside 777 (1947) -- (The technology used to date the newspaper at the climax is crucial to the happy ending.) Next: Really gross horror film
  20. TCM played Destroy All Monsters a few weeks ago. Godzilla has a leading role.
  21. This director was the son of one of the great English actor-managers, whose name is actually mentioned in one of the songs from Cats. The wife was an actress with a distinguished career who appeared in an earlier version of a much more famous Hollywood film. Name the couple, his father, and her film I referred to. Also mention the Oscar-winning films the couple is associated with. For a ton of extra credit, name the song in Cats that mentions his father.
  22. 1. Robert Aldrich -- Hush... Hush, Sweet Charlotte (1964) 2. William Castle -- Mr. Sardonicus (1961) 5. Lewis Milestone -- All Quiet on the Western Front (1930) 6. Mike Nichols -- Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966) 7. Alexander Payne -- Sidways (2009) 8. Vincent Sherman -- The Young Philadelphians (1959) 9. George Sidney -- Young Bess (1953) 10. Don Siegel -- Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)
  23. On Svengoolie tomorrow, February 20, 2021 Although I don't remember it well, I do have fond memories of this film. Directed by the great Joe May, who directed one of my favorite silent films, the two-part classic The Indian Tomb.
