What are your favorite Exploitation movies?
Swithin replied to ClassicVintageMovies's topic in General Discussions
That tragedy is, sadly, very much part of our local NYC history. I believe it has been featured in drama and documentary. The musical Rags, which was not a great success but which has a great score by Charles Strouse/Stephen Schwartz features it as a subplot. The title song is sung by a girl who later dies in the blaze. Today, these sorts of fires are happening in places like Bangladesh, which make clothing for the American market. Here is a brief interview with Charles Strouse about the show, which features snippets of the excellent title song. http://www.rnh.com/videos.html?gallery=193 And from the show itself, via the Tony Award show: -
Errol Flynn vs. John Barrymore (not what you think)
Swithin replied to ziggyelman's topic in General Discussions
John Barrymore was playing Hamlet on stage at least into his 40s. He was the great Hamlet of his generation, and the stage can be more forgiving about age. Blanche Yurka played Gertrude, his mother -- and she was five years younger! Errol Flynn dabbled in some stage work in the early 1930s, but he didn't pursue it, didn't really have that great training and discipline that comes from stage work, and that was in Barrymore's bones. Flynn was a great presence on screen but IMHO was probably at his best with a sword in his hand. I know very little about the tragedy in either man's life. -
It's a wonderful movie, at the apex of the old Hollywood, IMHO. Travers as a Brit doesn't bother me, nor does Teresa Wright and Walter Pidgeon. Travers also played a Brit in Stanley and Livingstone. Just prior to Mrs. Miniver, Pidgeon played a Welshman -- in How Green Was My Valley.

The First Film That Comes to Mind...

On the other hand, I would think that, if Universal doesn't care about those early films, they would just say, "sure, go ahead and show them, we don't care..." Assuming there were prints available, of course.

It's too hard to pick my favorite George Zucco performance -- there are way too many of them! I particularly like the "snarling, ferocious" speech he gives in The Mad Monster, in which he's talking about what seems to be a little dog in a cage -- it's supposed to be a wolf.

I had a friend who used to have a movie party every month -- 16mm films. Once she showed *The Exterminating Angel*. She put reel three on before reel two, by mistake. No one noticed the difference. We'd probably never have noticed, if it hadn't said "The End," and we had one more reel to go!

TCM PROGRAMMING CHALLENGE #23 -- Hitting 100!
Swithin replied to Capuchin's topic in TCM Program Challenges Archive
Yet another premiere-related question. Are all movies in the "original Turner library" (as noted in the OP) exempt from premiere limits? Are "Public Domain" movies exempt as well? -
Addison, I think you might be operating from a bit of hindsight and from the fact that there is a resurgence of women's issues in the news today. I don't think (though I'm not sure) that there is any evidence that the women around Wilson had any particular interest in the suffrage movement. His second wife was in fact from a pretty conservative background. The League of Nations, which was beginning to morph into a push for the United Nations (founded a year after the movie was made) was a much bigger issue in 1944 and on alot of people's minds, and had to be dealt with. Of course I think the movie was too short, and I actually wouldn't have minded another 20 minutes or so, devoted to Wilson and Suffrage for Women!

I particularly loved the 1912 convention scenes -- so dramatic and colorful. It shows how uncertain things were right up to the last minute, in those days. Maybe that wasn't the best way to nominate a candidate, but it makes for great theater -- all that hoopla, the speeches, the bands, the drama. I was not familiar with the actor Paul Everton, who played Judge John W. Westcott, who placed Wilson's name in nomination. I thought his speech was a great example of old-fashioned oratory.

I'm an admirer as well. I worked with Teresa Wright on a project back in the mid-1990s. She told me a very funny story about Greer Garson which I will post during in March. I also knew a guy whose father was GG's first husband (Edward Snelson).

But that's what I was trying to do, when the thread was reinstated. I posted about my experiences about watching the film again yesterday. Then you came along and went back to politics! That is your right; but when the thread was reinstated, I was doing exactly what you are suggesting, but you thwarted me! So let's get back to the movie!
-
I was by no means saying anything negative about Reagen, I'm sorry if you interpreted my comments that way. I meant that, whatever one thinks about his accomplishments, the talents he learned in his pre-politics profession came in handy in politics. I work with alot of actors, I can see how that acting skill serves them well in all sorts of fields -- law, for example.

I had DVR'd Wilson and was looking at it again yesterday. I feel even more strongly that it's a truly great film. Fascinating bits of history, terrific performances, incredible production values, and you get to (briefly) hear Charles Coburn sing! It couldn't cover all the details of his two terms as President, but I think it did a pretty good job of focusing on some important issues, with some accuracy. George Macready, usually a villain, has an uncredited role, as one of Wilson's helpers at the convention. Wilson was inaugurated 100 years ago next month, this film would have been good for someone's Challenge series!

Where did the 'Wiilson" thread go?
Swithin replied to DownGoesFrazier's topic in General Discussions
Ah, I didn't mean to change your spelling of tookus. It's transliterated from Yiddish, so I think it shows up many ways. An old Jewish grandmother would pronounce it "tuchus," with the "ch" sound being like the ch in Bach. I know a few Yiddish expressions. A good one is "Tuchus affen tisch," which means "put up or shut up," but actually translates as "put your butt on the table." -

Swithin replied to DownGoesFrazier's topic in General Discussions
I hope not, a policy of nipping it in the bud could put the kibosh on good conversation -- you never really can tell how things will develop; sometimes things look like they'll take a turn for the nasty, but even that can get sidetracked in something interesting (and not nasty). By the way, Dargo, I was worried that your use of the word "tookis" might get this thread shut down! If the Moderator really wants to "crack" down, that is. -
You are correct, Finance!

Where did the 'Wiilson" thread go?
Swithin replied to DownGoesFrazier's topic in General Discussions
I missed that post. Wouldn't it then be appropriate just to delete the offending post(s), rather than the whole thread? That would make the point even clearer, rather than confusing us as to the cause for the shutdown. -
Where did the 'Wiilson" thread go?
Swithin replied to DownGoesFrazier's topic in General Discussions
I agree with you, Dargo, I don't think it got nastily political. I would also point out that the Code says nothing about politics. Although there have been directions from the Moderator about politics from time to time, it might make sense, if TCM is really against political discussion (as it has a right to be), that they *say so in the Code*, rather than having us rely on our memory of later "amendments." Yes, I know they own this place and can do anything they want with it. But it might make sense for them to build the political ban right into the Code, if they are serious about it. (However I wonder if they would really want to do that.) On the other hand, the first thing that the Code does mention as being prohibited is "sexually explicit content." Maybe my photo of Hattie Jacques as Matron in Carry On Nurse is what brought the thread down. I'll post it again, as a test of my hypothesis: -
Where did the 'Wiilson" thread go?
Swithin replied to DownGoesFrazier's topic in General Discussions
I was wondering about that. It was shortly after I posted my first photo on this site, ever! Maybe it was too much for the board to bear! The thread was getting a little political, with the mention of other presidents, but wouldn't it just be locked rather than deleted? -
The great *Ruth Nelson*, whom we just saw in Wilson as Wilson's first wife Ellen! She had a major theater career, appearing in many of the Group Theatre's seminal productions of plays by Clifford Odets in the 1930s. She also understudied Florence Eldridge as Mary Tyrone, in the original Broadway production of Long Day's Journey into Night.

That was Reagen's profession -- he was an actor. That's the scary bit, that someone trained to move people with rhetoric (in the old fashioned sense) can sway an audience. If we had a President who had been a plumber in his previous career, he would be able to fix a toilet; Reagen's skills from his previous career enabled him to know how to present himself; and how to memorize lines as well! That's why I think the idea of actors getting into politics is a scary one, no matter what their political stripe, in this age of "everything is theater."

Omigod *Addison*, it worked! Thanks! You explained it so clearly, I've never been able to understand it before. TCM showed some Carry On films last year, and I wanted to post a photo I took of the home of Hattie Jacques in London. I couldn't figure out how to do that, but thanks to you here's a photo of Hattie from Google Images! I assume I can do the same with photos on my computer.
