*You Can't Cheat an Honest Man* ?

In NYC we have a nickname for Coronas -- it starts with a "p" has four letters and ends with an "s." Maybe we should be watching Juarez or Viva Villa today.

The good news for me is that *Kidnapped* (1938) will be shown on Freddie Bartholomew day (August 18). I love that version of the film and haven't seen it in yonks!

I threw out my VCR a while back. In the same fit of anti-antique rage, I threw out my audio cassette player. But recently I needed to look at a VHS tape, which I had. I went to a neighbor to do so. Is there a simple machine that transfers VHS tapes to DVDs? I know there are elaborate machines that can do that, I'm just looking for a simple, small device. I know there is a machine to transfer audio cassettes to MP3 files.

A film lovers dream: I just noticed that *Celine and Julie Go Boating* opens Friday for a week at the Film Forum in NYC. I'm excited! Haven't seen the film in yonks and have very fond memories of it. It's a new 35mm print, all 193 minutes of it! I can't wait...

Ripley's Game (with John Malkovitch) was shot in Venice/Veneto and features a Palladian villa. Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow takes place in Naples, Milan, and Rome. Don't forget Death in Venice ! So many films to choose from!

It looks like no one is going to get this, so I'll just reveal the answer. It's *Madame Sul-Te-Wan*, who played Tahama in King of the Zombies and is said to be the first African-American actor to sign a contract. Here is a tribute that someone posted on TCM:

I think she gives a great performance as Tahama in King of the Zombies, a film which, btw, was nominated for an Oscar for best music score!
Thread open.

For "revealed," think an alternative name for the last book of the N.T.

The pairing of *Caged* and *House of Women* on July 19 is fascinating and offers a lesson in Hollywood's change of style toward a serious subject. The former, made in 1950, is perhaps Hollywood's best women's prison movie, offering a bleak portrayal of innocence corrupted; the latter, made over a decade later, is more or less a fairy tale with a happy ending. I still say Eleanor Parker should have won the best actress Oscar for Caged, in a highly competitive year.
*Eleanor Parker* will be 90 on June 26, 2012. Will she be making an appearance on TCM, in person and/or with her films?

That's what I thought. But if you ever find out that the dogs in The Killer Shrews didn't actually wear bits of carpet on their backs, don't tell me!
-
I read once that in Ed Wood's Bride of the Monster, Bela Lugosi mistakenly says to Loretta King, "Don't be afraid of Lobo, he's as harmless as a kitchen." But I've listened to it and think he actually does say "kitten."

Gotta go back to my Legacy discs and look at them all again. Apart from Frankenstein, Bride, and FMTWM, the others blur together. I remember the scenes but not the films they come from.
-
I'm afraid I like them all. House of Dracula is the one with the hunchbacked nurse, isn't it? She's sad, but kind of sweet.

Any sign of The Egyptian anywhere? I've been waiting for ages!

Great song, brings back so many memories.
