  1. *Wilson* is one of the great biopics. I think the lead performance by Alexander Knox is one of the greatest performances, ever. The film is totally hagiographic -- it makes Wilson out to be a sort of saint, which he wasn't -- but it's a truly great epic with a terrific supporting cast of brilliant character actors. It's a Fox film and has been shown on FMC.

  2. I wish they would screen *Witchfinder General*, one of the great horror films (and in my opinion Price's greatest role). But they should show the UK version -- the US version looks pretty much the same, but they totally changed the music track. Paul Ferris's music for the UK version is particularly beautiful.

When I was a boy, I went to see *The Raven* at a movie theater on Main Street in White Plains, NY. Vincent Price, Peter Lorre, and Boris Karloff were there, promoting the movie. It was great to see them in person!

  3. I think Hatfield introduced Lansbury to Peter, the man she married.

Also, a memorial for Hatfield was held within a few days of one for Jerome Robbins, who was as famous for being disliked as Hatfield was for being liked. Eli Wallach was one of the speakers at Hatfield's.

  4. I apologize for the way I started this thread. I did want to call attention to Glenda's close race, before it was over, and then to her victory. But I shouldn't have alluded to the fact that I share her progressive politics, because that opened the door to a political discussion. There are plenty of sites for political discussions.

  5. Glenda not only won her election; her Labour colleague in an adjacent district (Frank Dobson) was re-elected unexpectedly as well; and the Camden local council in North London returned to Labour. It had been run by an alliance of Conservatives and Lib Dems. So it seems that people still have faith in the power of progressive politics to improve their lives.

  6. Just to clarify -- Cameron is the head of the Conservative (Tory) party. Glenda Jackson is a Labour MP -- the head of her party is (for the moment) Gordon Brown. But I don't want to get too political here. However, the jobs report in the US looks good at the moment.

Bob Anderson was a "good egg." Really nice man. He and his ex-wife Teresa Wright remained close friends until her death.

  7. Congratulations to Glenda Jackson, two-time Academy Award-winner, who won her election as MP for Hampstead & Kilburn. She has served in Parliament since 1992, but the newly drawn district as well as the general trend against her Labour Party put the outcome in doubt. It was one of the last races to be called. She won narrowly.

  8. I'm not a Brit though I spend alot of time there. I was born and live in NYC. But if you are interested, look for a TV station that broadcasts the UK results in depth on Thursday. Candidates don't have the luxury of being safely in their HQ to get results; they all gather in the local town hall, to hear the results. An official makes the announcement, and you see the candidates lined up -- not just the major parties, but the party you would vote for as well. It's quite amusing and refreshing, to see trad. men/women in suits standing there with the likes of a man with a banana on his head, as the winner is announced.

Maybe C-SPAN 3 will cover it, or one of the Brit websites, and due to the time difference it wouldn't be so late for us.

  9. I only put up the subject because of her connection to film. I would think that a second career for an excellent, renowned film actor might be as relevant to the Board as "Henry Fonda's hirsuteness" and other items of presumed (but not to me) interest! Perhaps mentioning the election would be ok but not my opinion about it.

  10. Academy Award-winning actress *Glenda Jackson* gave up her movie and stage career in order to serve as an Member of Parliament. She has been MP for London's Hampstead & Highgate district for many years. Now called Hampstead & Kilburn, the slightly changed district is less favorable to her Labour Party. Let's give her a cheer and hope that she is victorious in Thursday's elections!

  11. Indeed it is a great film. Whenever I catch a glimpse of it on TCM, it draws me in and I can't stop watching. I know the film's director, Anthony Harvey, pretty well. He's English but now makes his home way out on Long Island. In addition to his amazing career as film editor and director, he is a charming, humorous, and extremely decent man.

  12. I'm looking forward to seeing *Arise My Love* which I haven't seen in years. It's on 4/28 at 10pm. I like it alot but remember that there were alot of exasperating contrivances in the plot. I don't remember what they are -- just remember that they were annoying. But still I loved the film. It stars Claudette Colbert, Ray Milland, George Zucco, Walter Abel, Aubrey Mather, and many, many, MANY others!
