  1. On Svengoolie tomorrow, September 4, 2021:

When I was a little kid, my friend's father took my friends and me to a Chinese restaurant on 170th Street in the Bronx, after which he took us to a bakery to get Charlotte Russes.  Then he took us to a very enjoyable double bill at the Luxor Theater: The Amazing Colossal Man and The Attack of the Puppet People. But I don't think I knew there was this sequel to the former film.

Okay, so now that I'm watching my boy Flynn in They Died With Their Boots On, and I got to see Ben in his new set.  I could have done without the cameraman panning around while Ben spoke, but I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt that they're trying to show off the set.  I liked the "Next, Then, Later," screen.  It had a nice, clean look.  I loved the screen with the "Sunday in New York" trailer.  I loved how colorful it looked and I liked the design on the side.  I think TCM's new aesthetic looks great and now I get to see my man, Flynn!

I agree, but what are the books on the shelf behind him?

Btw, I just googled Lt. Gen. Winfield Scott, and he does look like Sydney Greenstreet! Good casting.

  3. Well, I had a look at the new designs, etc., and I like them! I've often felt that much of the TCM design was way too "Noir-centric," meaning it raised the Noir genre to pride of place. I like Noir, I'm just not as obsessed by the genre as some.

I just heard Ben's little reassuring speech, which should set us all at ease. I like the set design, but I want to know if those books on the shelf in the distance behind him are real, and if so, what are they?

  4. I feel that the person quoted in the OP's post has too much affection for the early films of John Huston.  I enjoy those Huston films but feel he did not achieve greatness until very late in his career, with Wise Blood (1979) and, particularly, with his final film, The Dead (1987). Both films actually demonstrate the influence of John Ford on Huston.  (I'm sticking with the actual nominees. In my "no opinion" years, the best films were not nominated.)

    1940

The Grapes of Wrath (Rebecca is a one of Hitchcock's weaker films.) Regarding The Grapes of Wrath, I feel that Ford is a greater filmmaker than Steinbeck is a writer. The film's ending fits the time.

    1941

How Green Was My Valley (Kane and York deserving as well.)

    1942

Mrs. Miniver (A very great and influential film.)

    1943

    Casablanca

    1944

Wilson (One of the great movie biographies, albeit hagiographic. Includes the best depiction of a political convention ever put on film.)

    1945

  5. Lucille Ball's first film is a film in which she has such a small role that it's hard to tell it's her.  She plays the uncredited role of "Blonde" in The Bowery (1933), a snappy, jolly New York City gay nineties film directed by Raoul Walsh, which can never, ever, be shown on TCM. It's on YouTube though, and just one look at the very first frame of the film will show you one of several reasons why it can't be shown.

I signed up for this year or so ago but did not want to watch on computer.  Is it possible to log in, select a movie and then have it "sent" to a smart TV?

I'm not sure. What I do is log on and select the movie on my phone or laptop, then connect it to my TV with an HDMI cable, if I want to watch on my TV. But I usually don't mind watching on my laptop, because I can use my AirPods, which I can't do with my TV, which I believe is smart but not quite smart enough.

My cable company is RCN. This service, which comes with my cable, is called RCN2Go, the point being you can watch a lot of stuff wherever you are. But since it's material not available on TV at the moment, I tend to watch at home. You have to log in -- most cable companies are noted, so I guess most participate in this.

Paul Porcasi was in "The Gay Divorcee" with the extremely manly Erik Rhodes.

(The extremely manly Erik Rhodes was actually the boyfriend of Julian West, producer and star of Vampyr (1932). West's real name was Nicolas Louis Alexandre de Gunzburg,  later fashion editor of Vogue and mentor to many giants in the fashion world.)

Erik Rhodes was in Charlie Chan in Paris with Keye Luke.

  8. I just did a search and found an article that said TCM has been sold. To read the article, I would have to join a site (Media Post), which I didn't want to do. But from the blurb, it seemed to indicate that TCM will be merging with Discovery. This may all be fake, but it's what I found. (Perhaps someone has already posted this, I haven't read all the posts in this thread.)

  9. Here are the facts about the TCM movies (177 at present) I can watch online, or wherever. This is different from the "On Demand" feature on my television.

    FAQ:

    What is Watch TCM?

Watch TCM is a "TV Everywhere" service that allows you to access on demand movies as well as live broadcasts of TCM online and on devices that support the Watch TCM app.

Which Devices is Watch TCM available on?

    • Online at TCM.com/watch
    • iOS phones and tablets (iPads)
    • Android phones
    • Amazon Fire TV
    • Apple TV (4th generation)

Apple Airplay is also supported for Watch TCM

Do I need a Cable TV or Satellite TV subscription to use Watch TCM?

Yes. You must be subscribed to Turner Classic Movies at home through a cable or satellite TV provider in order to use Watch TCM.

Ok, I have TCM at home. How do I access/sign-in to Watch TCM to watch movies?

Here are simple steps to access Watch TCM.

    1.  Have your Cable or Satellite TV account login information ready, this is usually just a user name and password. If you don’t know what this is, contact your service provider.

    2.  Find your service provider from our list. If you are having problems seeing your TV provider, please select “view all” for an alphabetical list.

    3.  Enter these credentials into the Watch TCM sign-up screen. Your TV Service Provider needs to be on our list of partners. Watch TCM is available only to customers who get TCM at home and have a TV provider on our current list.

    What movies are available?

Most of the films that air on TCM are available on Watch TCM. However, due to licensing issues, some titles may not be available. Shorts that air on the network are also available on Watch TCM as well as hosted introductions to movies.

    How long are movies available?

Movies are available generally for 7 days in Watch TCM after they air on Turner Classic Movies. In most cases, movies will appear in Watch TCM within 3 hours after they air on the network.

Can I watch the live broadcast of TCM?

Yes. There are 2 live broadcasts on Watch TCM. The West Coast feed shows films in PST, while the East Coast version shows films in EST. No matter where you are, you can access either of these live broadcasts in Watch TCM.

I missed my favorite movie. Will it come back?

In most cases, Yes. Movies often air on TCM more than once during the year, and if we have the licensing rights to play the movie on Watch TCM, they will be included again.

How do I use Closed Captions on Watch TCM?

Locate the “CC” box on your online video player or mobile device video playback. If captions are available for the program, selecting this box will enable Closed Captions to appear.
