Another might be that strict gender stereotypes were beginning to be challenged in the 50's, anticipating the more open rebelliousness of the 60's?

I would also like to say that while "The Godfather" (1972) is a fine film, I think Puzo's book is much deeper and does indeed have many themes and values it expounds upon.
Well I gave it a try and there were a few scenes where I felt he was being needlessly vulgar...
