  1. When I look at them movies of the classic era I see it as a portrayal of how we/they whished the world was rather than how it was.

No, what you see is a portrayal that was heavily censored in many instances due to the production code. And even with the code, not all movies necessarily portrayed the world how people wished it was -- certainly I don't think many would want the world to be like in film noirs, full of doomed, flawed individuals and also full of double-crossings, for example.

  2. > I find it amazing how often we're urged to go right

    > ahead and be honest & not hesitate to voice our true

    > opinion

Look, if someone simply states an opinion that's one thing. When someone makes sweeping generalizations and inaccurate statements, that's something else and it shouldn't be surprising if someone else calls you on it. It's one thing to say "I don't enjoy any of that director's movies" (which sound quite factual and the accuracy of which cannot be argued, since it tells you the person's feelings) and quite another thing to say "That director never made a good movie in his life!" (which isn't necessarily factual and very possibly, totally inaccurate, and all the more so in that different people might have different feelings about that director's movies. And I'm just using "that director" to make this a very general example, that could be any director who ever lived and breathed on planet Earth.

And as Arkadin said, once people express diverging viewpoints on matters that involve artistic taste, it's much easier to just agree to disagree... there's no point in someone coming back over and over and over again to defend a sweeping generalization or something that is quite possibly totally inaccurate.

  3. > I am speaking to their violent, foul mouthed,

Artistic endeavors shouldn't be limited to portrayals of upper-class people who speak politely and engage in leisurely activities.

Marty Scorsese is a great director because he's chosen to portray some of the darkest aspects of the human soul, in a way that hopefully sheds a bit of light into the lives of people we probably wouldn't care to know in real life. Some of the most memorable characters of his contemporary films are either real people or based closely on real people - Travis Bickle, Jake LaMotta, Henry Hill, Frank Costello, Howard Hughes. And he's examined the lives of these poor souls with extraordinary filmmaking that also benefits from some of the best craftspeople in the industry, especially when it comes to editing, cinematography, set design, costume design, etc.

Of course his movie's aren't everyone's cup of tea, and nobody should be expected to enjoy these movies (which oddly enough is easy enough to do when you focus on the filmmaking technique, which is often exhilarating).

We're very fortunate to have such fine American directors as Scorsese and Eastwood, their movies aren't about genteel aristocrats who speak politely and demonstrating great education, but what would be so American about that? When I feel like watching something like that, I'll just rent a Merchant-Ivory.

  4. I've tried to watch all the DK movies that have shown on TCM lately, and I also rented The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. He's not my favorite comedian, but it's sad to see his movies apparently being slowly forgotten due to lack of a proper DVD re-release. At least all of the Goldwyn and MGM titles should be made available again.

  5. My guess it's they just picked the titles that were already in the schedule, although playing separately. They tend to have the same titles shown once a month for 3-5 months, then rotate. It's not terribly exciting, and that goes for FMC itself, too.

A really good CR retrospective should also have included The Little Princess and Captain from Castile, which others also mentioned.

This so-called "Fox Legacy" thing is their most ambitious effort yet to copy from TCM, I think it's a poor copy of "Star of the Month", but done in a single Saturday.
