Woo-hoo. TV special. Sounds sooo exciting.

-
Any movie with Rita can't be all bad -- and chances are it will be very good! B-)

Stanley Donen told the other day about how they made all those amazing special effects, it was quite an achievement for its day!

-
Gene Kelly was always great dancing alone, or with Judy, or Rita, or Fred, or Cyd, or Donald, or Debbie... he was even amazing when he danced with the newspaper on the floor!

-
You're right, the part in Casablanca where they play La Marseilleise and the German anthem is absolutely wonderful!

I would add the part in The Godfather, Part II where little Vito Corleone has just arrived to Ellis Island, and he looks at the Statue of Liberty for the first time.

-
I could tell you that, but you wouldn't believe me.

Well. Sometimes changes are made when adapting movies based on novels, or on Broadway musicals. I can understand the desire for the moviegoers for the movie to remain faithful to the source material, but sometimes changes may be deemed necessary...
If they help the movie reach a wider audience, it's all for the best, because there's a better chance more movies will be made...

You can always rent it and give it a try.

Do you happen to know which version was used for the MGM/UA laserdisc?

Why is it so hard to get a first-rate video transfer of TQM?
It's the luck of the Irish, I tell you

As for Lillian Gish movies, when is TCM going to unveil the new restoration of THE WHITE SISTER (1923)? I have heard some rumors that it might debut sometime later this year? I have heard similar talk concerning BROWN OF HARVARD (1926), starring William Haines. Wish I knew if they were correct?
We can only hope so!

P.S. Which version of The Wind do you have? I have the MGM/UA home video laserdisc, a double disc with The Crowd

Yes, I'm just as happy! B-)

Why, Arkadin, you sound like an analog outlaw in the digital age!

-
Are you sure you're not referring to the Al Jolson Collection that came out on laserdisc here in the U.S., which has like 7 of his movies?

Abba rocks, lookin' forward to the movie version of Mamma Mia

Sad, but true

Thank you for those photos with Cyd Charisse, Ayres

It's a great way to remember her birthday!!!

Why couldn't Paramount just have made a deal with Criterion?

-
So this new and more complete version is about 5-1/2 hours? Swweeeeeet!
Not quite up there with Berlin Alexanderplatz, but definitely must be quite an experience to watch a silent movie that runs over 5 hours.
(Obviously we'll never be able to see Greed as Von Stroheim would have intended)

For me, the original Godzilla (the one with Raymond Burr added in) is very somber and very frightening. There is a lot of foreboding and some atmospheric scenes along fishing villages, with wind blowing, thunder, etc.
But the one with Raymond Burr isn't the original one, it's the Americanized version. The original was the one without RB.

Well you may have a point there. The OP seemed a bit "out there" at first glance but maybe there's something there.
Maybe Mary Poppins ain't such a good movie for children.
And it stars that annoying Julie Andrews, too.

"Cover Girl" with Rita and Gene!

Or maybe a scene with both of them and both of their alter egos? Just imagine, Kelly x2 and Rita x2!!!
