  1. In the early 60s MGM went through a very harrowing run of productions. Minus a Louie B. Mayer, the powers that be staked their entire studio almost on a picture by picture basis. While some of MGM's vintage sixties output (like Grand Prix) did well and kept the studio afloat, other well intentioned product (like the remakes of Mutiny on the Bounty and Goodbye Mr. Chips) just failed to gell at the box office.

It was a sad state of affairs, and it affected just about everything coming out of Culver City.

I'm not entirely sure that the original movie was a distant memory at the time the remake came out, there's a chance it showed on TV from time to time.

  2. Let's hear it for the old-fashioned opening credits, and they don't get any more old fashioned than (bless his heart) the ones for movies like Abraham Lincoln, which premiered today and which (the opening credits remind us) was "personally directed by D.W. Griffith".

And just to clear up any confusion, the cast list is headed by helpful "Characters" and "Played by" headers.

I really get a kick out of the old-fashioned opening credits, they're so charming :)

  3. Ah, more illegal bootlegs! Thanks for sharing....

BTW why not post a link directly to your putfile homepage so those interested can browse everything at once?

  4. Analog Television Sets Outlawed

    Digital Transition Countdown Begins

The days of the rabbit ears are numbered?sort of.

As of March 1, U.S. retailers can no longer sell analog TVs. All television sets 13 inches and above must be sold with an embedded digital tuner. That's because in two years, over-the-air analog TV broadcast signals will go dark as part of the congressionally mandated push toward an all-digital medium to help free up the airwaves.

Trouble is, there are still about 20 million U.S. households using purely analog sets. And according to the National Association of Broadcasters, about 56 percent of Americans have "seen, read or heard nothing" about the digital transition. Then there are all the viewers who rely on an analog antenna for their secondary TV set.

The government has approved $1.5 billion for a voucher program to help analog TV owners manage the switch. The program, which goes into effect next year, will give viewers coupons for a digital converter box that will allow them to continue receiving television signals. The boxes are expected to cost between $50 and $70, and the coupons will be worth $40.

With the new boxes, viewers can still watch television for free. They can also still receive OTA digital signals, so those rabbit ears will still function if complimented by a digital receiver.

Still, the change is expected to cause some hiccups among poor and elderly viewers who are accustomed to a manner of viewing that has been unchanged for decades.

Most televisions sold in recent years that are 25 inches and above already have a digital (ATSC) tuner included. For more information, viewers can go to www.dtvtransition.org, which offers a handy countdown clock.

  5. The movie theatres are pricing themselves beyond acceptable standards to me. It does fuel my DVD collecting, however, but it's their choice.

Studios probably like that just fine, actually. They get to keep the profits from DVD sales 100%, unlike the box-office take, which they have to share with exhibitors.

  6. I'm not too worried about Napoleon on DVD -- I own the laserdisc and can transfer to DVD just in case.

Although I'm wondering how much longer this "new" version is compared to the Coppola one.
