  1. I hope those of us who have advocated for letterboxing and widescreen presentations in the past will not face a similar uphill struggle when it comes to pillarboxing.

As more and more Americans get widescreen HDTV's, will they also be unhappy with the pillarboxing of non-anamorphic, non-widescreen movies?

  2. They did show an awful lot of 30's movies during prime time when they had Jean Arthur as SOTM, and also couple of days during the Harry Warren tribute, when it was mostly WB musicals of the 30's.

Not that I mind at all. Thank heavens for TiVo; I hardly ever watch anything at the same time it's being shown. :D

  3. You know, as a kid I read some of the old Captain Marvel comics from the 40's that my mom had saved. It was just awesome, to look at the art and the ads and how everything was different way before I was born.

That probably had a big impact on me in terms of always being fascinated with the not-too-distant past, that which still allows us to explore its films, magazines, graphic novels, etc.

You probably have no idea how much I'd love to be able to travel back in time to the 40's and get to see it all with my own eyes. :x

  4. When it comes to recent movies, I more or less like the same ones that have been mentioned here... I feel that Supergirl was a lost opportunity, and hope that the character may be revisited at some point, with a better script and better direction. I also would love to see a big-screen WonderWoman. :)

The one movie that I feel is rather underrated is Warren Beatty's Dick Tracy - the color design and Vittorio Storaro's photography are awesome, and the cast is excellent.

As for the old-time movies/serials from the Golden Era, I'd mention The Adventures of Captain Marvel as one of the better (or most memorable) movie serials.

  5. Very unlikely to show up on TCM due to it being a Fox title.

The DVD is 8.99 from amazon.com.

amazon also offers a set of 17 Fox Film Noirs for $135:

  6. Isn't it highly unlikely that MGM would have screen-tested a complete unknown for the part in The Secret Garden when they already had one of the most popular child actresses of the time?

  7. My understanding is that due to the legalities with the individual films and that MST originally aired on a local tv station and then picked up by Comedy channel and Comedy Central and then the SciFi channel is what is going to prevent them from all being available again.

That's a shame! I'm surprised there's really no way to sort out all the rights issues. :(

  8. Okay....no dvd of The Farmer Takes A Wife?! VHS only. Well, I was hoping to see a widescreen version...is 1.37:1 widescreen?

1.37:1 is roughly the same ratio as the old-fashioned TV screens, so no widescreen. :)

I've been catching up with Fox musicals lately, there's quite a few that they should have on DVD by now, including Coney Island and My Gal Sal.

There's a few threads in the musical sections with Fox musicals, have you seen them?

  9. It's funny because there's a lot of those kinds of "subliminal" moments in very many movies, and a lot of the time they don't register consciously unless someone else points them out to us. Good catch on your part! :)
