There's also a good DVD out there, if you happen to get a chance to rent. It has a nice audio commentary by the director.

Oh. There wasn't a single movie with any of them that you enjoyed?

I'll be the first to admit that I didn't fully appreciate the qualities of many John Ford/John Wayne movies the first few times I watched them. I'm glad I've learned to appreciate them a little bit more.
The doc shown here on TCM, Peter Bogdanovich's Directed by John Ford, has also been helpful in further appreciating his work, much of which featured Wayne.
There *are* a few films that JW is in that I still don't like that much, chiefly Sands of Iwo Jima, which I feel is a bit dated now. Even so I was glad to see it again shortly before Eastwood's Flags of Our Fathers for a bit of perspective.

I wouldn't be too depressed over having to upgrade to DVD. Before the DVDs are actually out, you may still be able to get a half-decent price for them at a used movie/music store, or sell on eBay. Then you use that towards the purchase of the DVDs.

Awesome photo, mongo, thanks!

otter,
When has anybody said that we shouldn't have let Brando be Brando?
Why do you insist on misrepresenting what I have said earlier, or simply ignore the gist of what I had said?
When did anybody say that anyone wanted Brando to conform to some kind of 2007 standard of beauty?
What Brando did was his business and no one else's, yet it doesn't change the fact that some people might be saddened by it. And -- IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH SUPERFICIAL BEAUTY. It has to do with a person's overall health.
Would you wish on someone that they die a premature death? I know I wouldn't. That's why it has nothing to do with superificial beauty.
Repeat. It has nothing to do with superficial beauty.
Have I gotten the point across that it has nothing to do with superficial beauty?
Because I can explain it again if I didn't get the point across the first 3,403 times.
I am saddened by all the actors and filmmakers who suffered from ill health for whatever reason in the twilight of their life. Sorry for being so sensitive. Sorry for wishing they'd lived in excellent health to their last day. Guess a little empathy is just an awful thing to have.

A great Technicolor musical to watch any time, but perhaps even more so in the winter season, this colorful Alice Faye starrer also features nice performances by Cesar Romero, John Payne and the incomparable Carmen Miranda.
There's a good audio soundtrack in the DVD by film historian Jeanine Basinger, who comments among other things on the irony that Carmen Miranda is much better known today than AF, although AF was one of her era's top musical stars.
Not much in the way in the way of other extras, just a few trailers. Still a good rental.

Looking back at it after catching up with Week-End in Havana, I still like this one a bit better

-
Isn't it in every movie?

-
Maybe it's a good thing they cast Audrey Hepburn instead of Julie Andrews for the film version of my My Fair Lady. JA is OK, but she doesn't even come close to having the kind of class that only Audrey could bring to a character.

It's spelled The Moon-Spinners.

Well. How about that. Maybe it was used in that context then. All I know is I live in the Bay Area and I participate a lot in the LGBT community and honestly can't recall anyone using the word in that context. "Colorful" can be something extravagant even if hetero.
But, anyway, good luck with that trivia bit.

Looking forward to this!

-
Bit harsh tho wasn't it?
-
I like Hayley very much too. I'll keep an eye out for that movie MissG

-
Well too bad they didn't have a DeLorean.

-
The Young Girls of Rochefort would be a great premiere!

-
I agree it'll be nice to see this on DVD

One day to go!

I believe Warner Home Video has all pre-1986 MGM titles, but not sure about some of the early Samuel Goldwyn titles from the 40's, which represent most of DK's early movies.
-
I don't think "colorful" has ever been a euphemism for homosexual.
-
Good point.
-
Those would be good titles to have. It's a shame Ivy hasn't ever been released in home video.

Excuse me?
Expressing regret over an actor's declining health is a "control issue"? And just how does expressing regret mean any kind of control?
What the heck is it supposed to mean, give them personal advise? Are you totally out of your mind?
For crying out loud, you see photos in magazines of someone's declining health and you feel sorry that their health isn't better... and all of a sudden you take that and you misrepresent that and speak of "control issues" and "becoming a personal advisor"?
What is wrong with you?
If you see someone battling any kind of health-adverse issue, would you not feel something in your heart? Just a wish perhaps, that they might find their way to better health? That they could have the healthiest life possibly to live a longer life?
Seriously, what is wrong with you? Sarcasm in any other situation would be fine, but we're talking about people's health and ability to enjoy life here. It's in their hands, whether they are movie stars or ordinary people. It's not something anyone else can control. It's just about people being able to lead a relatively healthy life.
Why are you being so sarcastic about something that is about other people's lives?

It's sad Brando got so overweight, but I don't think he really cared about superficial things.
There is nothing superficial about it. There's many health problems associated with it.

Thanks TCM for Columbia
