Some great "B"'s are a-coming this month!
Cinemascope replied to Bronxgirl48's topic in General Discussions
Well as a Gen-X'er, I truly appreciate watching all of the fun movies made before my time! -
Some of the decisions made to film one way instead of the other might seem odd in the age of digital filmmaking... but sometimes, it was felt that using Technicolor instead of B&W might reveal some of the "cheats" that had to be made to disguise one location for another... According to imdb.com, How Green Was My Valley was filmed in B&W because "the color of flowers in Southern California did not match those found in Wales". Although in the early days, not using Technicolor could also be due to budgetary considerations or the lack of availability of Technicolor cameras.

It's too bad they couldn't include it in the R&H set, but at any rate, the new DVD that just came out has some interesting bonus features: # Featurette: A Classic Evolves from Print to Screen # Faces of the East: Casting the movie # The Songs of Flower Drum Song # A look at the sets and costumes # The Legacy of Rodgers and Hammerstein # Commentary with actress Nancy Kwan and film historian Nick Redman

I think the Beach movies from the 60's are a great piece of nostalgia programming... and I'm not sure that anybody else would play them uncut, commercial-free, and in their original aspect ratio. -
Oh, dear...what is the world coming to, oh god?

Well when it comes to "31 Days of Oscar" they only show stuff that won or was nominated... but your definition of good may differ from other people's. -
Well just imagine if they'd played the long version of the movie...

LOL edgecliff, I was the first one to post the link to the DVDBeaver.com review.

The Netflix envelope arrived today, I hope to watch it soon but never on Sunday!

I'm glad they're coming. I may just have to record a lot of them for time-shifting purposes because I am not sure I can watch them all when they show. But sooner or later I'll catch up with all of them B's. -
Death of the old-fashioned DVD player

I would probably tend to go with LCD for home-theater. It's worked really well so far with my computer monitor. But I feel the biggest reason to avoid getting a new HD monitor for the old home-theater (from the point of view of a classic film fan) is that it only helps if you watch a lot of programming that's in HD -- other than that, I don't think it's worth getting yet. -
I wonder what many musicals from the 30's would have looked like in 3-strip Technicolor. Technicolor musicals didn't really become popular unti the 40's. Look at what Busby Berkeley did with The Gang's All Here in 1943 and wonder what he might have done while still at Warner's in the 30's, if those musicals had been in full Technicolor. Other than that, I can't think of much.

BDecco, As you can probably already tell, there is a lot of disagreement among TCM viewers. The discussion comes up almost every week during "31 Days of Oscar" (which is admittedly a complete break from the regular TCM schedule). I'd really like to know, if you have a chance, what you think of the schedules for March (after the 3rd), April and May.
-
I do not like to make any assumptions, I just think that different people could come to different conclusions about this. I am not a mind-reader so I can't really say what conclusion you might have reached, if any.
-
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, dash, but we could only hope that it was at least a well-informed opinion. I don't think you can base an opinion exclusively on the programming during "31 Days of Oscar" for reasons that have been abundantly explained on the boards. Ultimately you don't have to watch TCM if you don't approve of the programming, you can switch to Fox Movie Channel or the Encore Drama/Encore Westerns channels if they are more to your liking.
-
It'll be showing next Monday, before all the GK musicals.
-
The fact that there aren't any DR movies could be interpreted in various ways... I personally wouldn't jump to any conclusions.
-
Could I ask you two questions before anything else? 1. How long have you been reading the TCM boards? 2. Have you taken the time to look at the schedules for TCM after the "31 Days of Oscar" is over? The March, April and May schedules are available on the website. Thank you!

For all of us musical lovers, FMC is showing Robert Wise's 1968 musical, Star! with Julie Andrews. It's letterboxed and scheduled for 3 pm ET.

Ah yes I get your drift. In the same vein, then, I'd love to see Scorsese, Francis Coppola, George Lucas, Steven Spielberg and Robert Zemeckis also as guest programmers. Without their films, I probably wouldn't have fallen so deeply in love with the movies, and especially with those of the Golden Era

Me too. The last time I watched it I was in pain because of the lousy transfer. Hopefully this will be a much, much better experience!

I was just being facetious

do you find pre-code movies slightly disappointing?
Cinemascope replied to dfordoom's topic in Pre-Code Films
I think the people who were interviewed in the documentary that TCM showed with the latest batch of Forbidden Hollywood made a pretty compelling case that there were better and stronger roles for women before the code than those made after the code, where women were often put in more unfavorably conditions (both in terms of the characters and as actresses themselves). I'll keep an eye out for the documentary next time it airs, it's hard to come up with specific examples right off the top of my head but they gave some excellent examples. -
I think Audrey Hepburn cuts across many demographics nicely. Although I was aghast that The Gap would use her for a publicity compaign, I found it interesting they'd be interested in using her image to reach out to its target audience.
