  1. Yes, but even if MGM were still a viable studio, it would still be but a shadow of its former self; the studio that once rightfully boasted that it had more stars than there are in Heaven started its downward slide since the early 50's and the ouster of Louis B. Mayer. The documentary MGM:When the Lion Roars did a good job of showing the studio through its golden years and as it headed towards its inevitable demise... it really does bring tears to my eyes to watch the footage of the studio lots and sets being torn down.
  2. Yeah, this was posted earlier in General Discussions. It'll be worth looking forward to!
  3. JR is very nice and all but I wouldn't think she looked like RH
  4. Yeah, Invitation to the Dance is where the clip comes from with GK dancing with some animated Russians.
  5. Yeah, Invitation to the Dance is where the clip comes from with GK dancing with some animated Russians.
  6. And I'm glad they have the the RKO and pre-86 MGM library, too!
  7. He was just great in roles like that. And I'd say he was as good in starring roles (Little Caesar) as in supporting ones.
  8. You can say that again! Kids once had beautiful movies like The Wizard of Oz, The Adventures of Robin Hood, The Little Princess, The Thief of Bagdad. Today they get the movie equivalent of junk food.
  9. Well at least he reached the century mark. May he rest in peace. Here's the AP wire story... http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070301/ap_en_mo/run_obit_brix_3
  10. Always nice to share a special movie with one's mother, dad, or that special someone! :x
  11. In another "it's a shame it's not on DVD" case, this lovely 1943 Technicolor musical from Fox can be occasionally seen on the FMC -- most recently as part of the homage to Cesar Romero. There's so much here to like -- Betty Grable, wearing some memorable hats and a lovely "Irish" dress, Phil Silvers' comic support, and of course the marvelously wily villain played by CR. The lovely Christmas number also makes this a natural for the holiday season!
  12. 'Tis a shame he made most of his movies at Fox, I'd love to see TCM make RW the "SOTM".
  13. My Gal Sal (1942) with Rita Hayworth and Victor Mature will be shown on FMC this Saturday, March 3rd at 9:30am ET. Anyone who loves Rita will probably enjoy this gay Technicolor musical!
  14. I propose we pick up the discussion in mid-May, so as to give everybody else a chance to see it, too. Hopefully nobody's enjoyment of the movie will have been spoiled by the, well, spoilers posted.
  15. Well, they are now officially just over a month away!
  16. Nothing like the good ol' college library!
  17. I thought Joan Fontaine was great in Rebecca, although her role makes it somewhat easy to be upstaged by the other actors, Olivier and Judith Anderson.
  18. I really admire the old movie stars who do some kind of charity work or work on behalf of such causes once they retire... Audrey Hepburn and DD are good examples.
  19. You'd hope maybe with the new Columbia deal, maybe TCM could finally show Two Rode Together, which they apparently couldn't get for the John Ford tribute last year.
