  1. Yes, Cheyney certainly was a delight. Crawford, Bill, Bob, and what a supporting cast! Splendid picture.
  2. Joan and Jeff Chandler in Female on the Beach.
  3. Dear jdb1; It seems you have misquoted me. You have re-arranged my paragraphs so that it appears my off-base argument was in reference to something that it was not. The Lady from Shanghai that Kidman is starring in is not related to the Orson Welles film. The only similarity is the title. In that regard, yes, off-base is what I meant. You are, however, entitled to your own opinions, and I would never say anyone's opinions were off-base. <> Comparing Kidman to Hayworth is especially irrelevant, considering I never made a comparison between them. I simply said the Kidman film and the Hayworth film are unrelated. But if you really want my opinion...Hayworth was a mediocre actress.
  4. Ooooh, there are some good movies on this schedule, though: "The Goddess" starring Kim Stanley. "Queen Bee." "Silkwood" "Coquette." Not as many rare old movies as I'd like to see, and a few too many newer films, but all in all a pretty decent schedule.
  5. My favorite Bette movies: A Stolen Life Beyond the Forest Winter Meeting Mr. Skeffington The Star All about Eve Now Voyager The Letter
  6. I agree about movies from the '60s. There are only a few from that decade I like. I have no problem with movies from the '70s, though, in fact some of my favorites are from that decade.
  7. I would agree that Brando was sexy if I didn't think he was such a jerk. He was so mean to Blanche in Streetcar Named Desire! I would never so much as look at him sideways after that. Of course, it was just his character in the film, but I never got over it!
  8. You guys are so off base. First of all, Nicole Kidman is NOT going to be in a re-make of The Lady from Shanghai. Yes, she WILL be in a movie with that title, but it has absolutely nothing to do with the original! So don't get your knickers in such a twist over nothing. However, yes, there are numerous re-makes floating around in Hollywood, but I see nothing unusual about this. There were FAR more re-makes being made in classic Hollywood. Heck, back then movies were re-made every five or ten years! I see nothing wrong with waiting fifty years to re-make a film, not that a re-make is always necessary. Some of the most famous movies of classic Hollywood were remakes themselves. Remember The Letter? How about Miss Sadie Thompson? Not even to mention movies like Camille or Salome which were remade as often as every year in the 1910s (by the time the Garbo version came about it was a very tired story, but that didn't stop it from being a great movie). And anyone who argues the lack of creativity in current Hollywood, obviously hasn't researched some of the OTHER titles in a star like Kidman's filmography. There is plenty of creativity there, and in films no one even bothered to watch... Take Dogville or Birth, for instance. A film like Birth could never have been filmed in classic Hollywood. And this is only the filmography of one current A-lister. Check a few others. Kirsten Dunst was just in Sophia Coppola's Marie Antoinette, which IMO rivalled the original in quality. Did anyone see Brian DePalma's The Black Dahlia? It was a superbly creative yet misunderstood film. And then there are those high quality films still being made based on popular books, such as The Devil Wears Prada, a fine film any way you slice it. And what do we have to look forward to as far as creative films? Have you checked out The Fountain? The storyline and production are amazing. How about Naomi Watts in The Painted Veil? What about Bobby or Fur? There are many exciting new films on the horizon. You just have to dig a little deeper than the commercial pictures which are always advertised. Most of the good films made nowadays are small independent features.
  9. lol I'm sorry I worded that so strongly. I am just used to the imdb boards where people word their arguments quite brutally.
  10. Joan Crawford Jessica Lange Barbara Stanwyck Nicole Kidman Greta Garbo Norma Shearer Greer Garson Gene Tierney Lana Turner Liza Minnelli Madonna Marlene Dietrich Theda Bara
  11. 1. Vertigo 2. Lifeboat 3. Rebecca 4. Rear Window 5. Family Plot
  12. < She looked nothing like a flapper in that movie. Do you even know what a flapper looks like?
  13. I will cheer when Fox releases a widescreen, restored DVD of THE EGYPTIAN.
  14. I'm from Michigan, and we get a lot of snow here. It's always good to sit home on a snowy day and watch a winter-themed film. Some of my favorites: "Christmas in Connecticut," starring Barbara Stanwyck. "Winter Meeting," starring Bette Davis. "Sadie McKee," starring Joan Crawford (has a beautiful snowy scene outside of a hospital window).
  15. Obviously some of you didn't get the message if (1) you consider the film "superficial" or (2) you don't understand why the young black girl didn't want to be black, given the social conditions of the times for people of any race besides white. You have to watch the film from a sociological viewpoint. It's understandable one wouldn't want to be black in the 1950s, given the racism of the time (she was expected to be a servant for the Lana Turner character, etc.). That's what this film is about.
  16. I agree completely. I have never seen a Marion Davies film, because they are so difficult to come by. I recorded "Five and Ten," though, and am looking forward to watching it!
  17. OMG what is wrong with you people? This film is a Douglas Sirk masterpiece.
