You're quite right about the lighting and the sounds in the prison barracks. How about the sounds of the barking dogs in the chase after Muni? When he hides underwater you can't hear them (or are they muffled?), then when he surfaces you hear them barking again. Really well done on every level.

Just joined but could not pass this up. I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang is one of my favorite movies. Love the line "I steal!" before Muni runs away into the darkness and you just hear his footsteps. Very powerful.

 

I read somewhere that the lighting and abruptness of the scene was an accident. The set lights failed or were turned off too soon but the director liked the result and kept the ending.
