Good guess but not yet. I believe with the clues that you gave for "The Devil and Miss Jones" I would have snagged it. ********************************************************* Clue # 2 Unhappily married

Many thanks path for recommending "The Devil and Miss Jones". It was a delightful comedy and Charles Coburn was worthy of his Oscar nomination. I especially got a kick out of the scenes in the shoe department with the little brat and also the events leading to the police station. Of course Jean Arthur was wonderful as usual and the rest of the cast perfecto...even Robert Cummings. Mongo

I'm back after watching "The Devil and Miss Jones" on TCM. You were right Path, its a delightful movie and I especially enjoyed Charles Coburn especially in the shoe department scenes. He deserved his Oscar nomination. ********************************************************* Now on to the game: Clue # 1 An inventor

P.S. I'll be sure to watch it since I don't recall ever seeing it.

Could it be "The Devil and Miss Jones"? Of course I looked it up.

I recently saw both Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee getting saluted at The Kennedy Center Honors and marveled at the wonderful chemistry from both of them throughout the years. My condolences to Ruby Dee Davis and the family. Mongo

For an actress I would say Olivia de Havilland in "The Heiress". Honorable mention: Luise Rainer in "The Good Earth". I'll need some time to think about the actors. Mongo

I'm sticking with the remake if only for the performance of Juanita Moore as Annie Johnson. I also admired Louise Beavers in the original. Mongo

Mr. Thalberg was certainly a young dynamo giving us classic films that endured the test of time. A particular favorite is "The Good Earth" in which the spectacular locust scenes can't be beat and the performance of Luise Rainer as Olan is outstanding. It would have been nice to see and hear from her. I'm just glad that he lived long enough to marry Norma Shearer and enjoy his two children (who if still living did not appear on the documentary?). No doubt he will live on through the classic films he helmed so brilliantly. Mongo

irodor your to be complimented on your knowledge of the aspects of Pan & Scan and Letterbox since your details are so precise. I believe the only time we hear from you is when TCM happens to show a movie in Pan & Scan that should or could have been screened in Letterbox. I also believe that if TCM had access to a Lettebox print of the movie "Shenandoah" they certainly would have aired it. Mongo

Fernando, since I have not seen any of the classic movies that you recommended I will be sure to watch them on TCM this month since your excellent reviews have convinced me to do so. I have a feeling I will be rewarded with some exceptional entertainment especially since Claudette Colbert is featured. Mongo

You've got a deal ML. If only it could have been. Mongo

A big pleasure for me is to be surrounded at the dinner table by grand character actors Thelma Ritter, Lucile Watson, Marjorie Main, Gladys George, Agnes Moorehead and Sara Allgood. I would pour the wine for those gals anyday. Mongo

Your movie definitely sounds like "Green Dolphin Street". Mongo

A few other books worth having are "The Leading Ladies" by James Robert Parish. Its a big book featuring Joan Crawford, Bette Davis, Olivia de Havilland, Rosalind Russell, Joan Blondell and Barbara Stanwyck. Loaded with some great pictures and information. Also "The Real Stars" (2 paperback books) featuring Hollywood's greatest character actors edited from the popular Film Fan Monthly. Indepth bios including that of Sara Allgood, Gladys George, Grady Sutton, Mary Wickes, John Carradine, Lee Patrick, Dwight Frye (hunchback in "Frankenstein"), Laird Cregar, Patsy Kelly, Billy Gilbert etc. Good stuff indeed.
