  1. I too enjoyed the antics of the East Side Kids marathon on TCM. Although cheaply made and short in length the films still made ya laugh. As far as Leo Gorcey (Mugs) is concerned he did drink heavily but the straw that broke the camel's back was when his father Bernard Gorcey (Louie in the Bowery Boys flicks) was in a road accident and died. Leo quit making the Bowery Boys movies after that. I have the pleasure of corresponding with Leo Gorcey Jr. a real nice guy. His book "Me and the Dead End Kid" is a good read and very candid about his dad. By the way the last member of the original Dead End Kids Bernard Punsley died this past year at 80. Mongo
  2. Gee, I also checked the October schedule and spotted some good horror/chiller/thrillers including: "Dracula" "The Mummy" "The Wolf Man" "Frankenstein" "Mad Love" "The Beast with Five Fingers" "Psycho" "The Bride of Frankenstein" "The Unholy Night" "I Walked with a Zombie" "The Haunting" "The Raven" "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" (all 3 versions) "The Thing" "Freaks" "The House on Haunted Hill" That's enough to suit my pallet for Halloween. Mongo
  3. It's amazing that this same question has been asked many times in the past on the boards. I have to make it my bussiness to see "If a Man Answers" considering all the interest in the movie. Mongo
  4. So sorry for the l-o-n-g stretch.
  5. I'am familiar with those films that you listed edgdrv. There all good ones especially "Storm Warning". I would like to see Cagney in "Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye" and Gene Kelly in "Christmas Holiday" which is a drama with Deanna Durbin and I believe its an MGM film which TCM should have in their vaults. Mongo
  6. The old time Disney animators were the best in the business. I especially admire the art work in such films as "Bambi" (those flowers, the Winter scenes, the forest fire etc.), "Pinocchio" (the water, so realistic, with the whale) and "Dumbo", "Cinderella", "Alice in Wonderland" etc. all magical to say the least. A job well done Mr. Thomas. Mongo
  7. Speaking of "Gone With the Wind" the character Mammy as played by Hattie McDaniel also had some witty lines: "It ain't fittin'. It just ain't fittin'. It ain't fittin'". ****************************************************** "She's comin'. I don't know why she's comin' but she's a comin'". ****************************************************** "Who dat? I never seen a woman wit dat color hair in all my life" (referring to Belle Watling). ******************************************************* "Miss Scarlett is prostrate with grief". ******************************************************* And as you said there are so many more. Mongo
  8. I always thought that Barbara Stanwyck and Robert Taylor made an attractive couple (married close to 11 years). I believe that Alexis Smith and Craig Stevens were married close to 50 years (also a handsome couple). Mongo
  9. By the way that socialite who appeared in many of the Marx Brothers movies was the fabulous Margaret Dumont. Mongo
  10. I recall that I liked Miss Lombard in the RKO movie "Vigil in the Night" when she played a nurse along with Anne Shirley as her sister. The movie "In Name Only" is also a favorite of mine which was juiced up by the performance of Kay Francis (a friend of Lombard's who suggested she do the role). Mongo
  11. There is only so many stars that TCM can fit into their 31 days in August tribute. I would have liked to see John Garfield but again he was featured some months ago along with a new documentary of his life which was swell. Another favorite Joan Crawford was left out however she was featured under the stars last year. Since Esther Williams was also top box office in her day I felt her chance was a fitting choice. And remember there's always next year, at which time we could begin all over again about the oodles of stars TCM couldn't fit into just 31 days. Mongo
  12. One of the graphics reminds me of the opening credits of Hitchcock's "North by Northwest" with the big office building full of windows. Mongo
  13. There is no doubt that Shelley Winters was hot to trot in her prime and she enjoyed every minute of it especially with William Holden. From what I understand she is in fragile health (in her 80s) and her daughter Vittoria (dad Vittorio Gassman) wants to take control of her mothers affairs which is not sitting well with Shelley. Mongo
  14. Marge Champion will be 85 years old tomorrow. Check the Happy Birthday thread in the AM. She and Gower did have a few starring roles including the movie "Everything I Have Is Yours" for MGM which was shown on TCM recently. Mongo
  15. By the way the East Side Kids marathon of 14 films is on Sept. 13th. at 9.30PM thru Sept. 14th ending at 3:00PM. Mongo
  16. J we already did a DAVIS OR CRAWFORD topic not that long ago. You'll find it under Your Favorites on page 7. I believe Davis came out in front. Mongo
  17. ...or is it "Spooks Run Wild"?
  18. Just for the fun of it TCM is presenting 14 East Side Kids comedies. You'll get a kick out of Leo Gorcey and his fractured Brooklyn accent while covorting and getting into trouble with the other guys including Huntz Hall and Bobby Jordan. Most of the flicks ran a little over an hour and were very popular during showings at neighborhood theaters. I believe that Ava Gardner is in one of them "Spooks on the Loose" along with Bela Lugosi. Mongo
  19. I recall how sweet and kind supporting actress Marie Windsor was when I wrote her for an autograph. She sent me a postcard with her picture on it and it was signed. She wrote that if I wanted an 8X10 just to send enough stamps for the postage. She was a sweetheart indeed. Mickey Rooney never responded to my request for a photo although I wrote a nice complimentary letter to him. Another good sport was Jane Withers who sent me a swell 8x10 of her in a dancing pose. I paid $10.00 for an 8x10 from starlet Gloria Jean who co-starred with W.C. Fields. One of my prize possessions is my 8x10 of Mickey Mantle which he signed in person while promoting recliners in North Carolina (a real nice guy). Of course Joan Crawford was the cream-of-the-crop when it came to her fans. Mongo
  20. I would say that when Rita Hayworth was a star she was admired all over the country including in the midwest, which I'm sure she appreciated. However I don't believe she would appreciate the juvenile behavior of one of her so called fans on these boards. Straighten up and fly right, and don't dare put the blame on Mame. Mongo
  21. Pipe-down leo! You not only mis-spell words but you can't even get a movie title straight. For your information the correct title of the Gary Cooper movie is "Ten North Frederick". And since it is a 20th Century-Fox film I believe AMC is showing it. Why don't you go over there and this way you won't have to put up with Bette Davis and Cary Grant on TCM. And stop peddling that book of yours free of charge. Adios leo. Mongo
  22. Stoney you certainly are a true-blue fan of pre 1951 classic films. Good for you. However you made me realize how lucky I am that I could grasp and enjoy most era's of filmmaking (except perhaps some silents). And nary does a film or movie star actually make my skin crawl. Either I like them or just don't like them which doesn't stop me from watching since other stars I do like may be in the same movie such as those grand character actors. Thanks for making me realize how fortunate I am. Mongo
  23. Moira, I also read that Raft turned down "The Maltese Falcon". There was an actor with poor judgment indeed. Mongo
