  1. Although I get a kick out of Abbott & Costello especially in "Hold That Ghost" and "A&C Meet Frankenstein" it's Laurel & Hardy that gratifies my funny bone. I love Fat & Skinny especially in "Way Out West", "Our Relations", "Block-Heads", "Saps at Sea", "Sons of the Desert", "A Chump at Oxford" etc. And although both comedy teams often repeated routines I found Abbott & Costello's to be more monotonous for some reason. However if I see a movie (which is seldom) of either team on the tube I will watch it. Mongo
  2. It's Dietrich for me, so much more exciting than Garbo although beautiful always looked sad and troubled as if her girdle was too tight. Dietrich intrigues and entices me especially in "Destry Rides Again", "Blonde Venus", "The Scarlet Empress", "Desire", "Manpower", "The Spoilers" and "Golden Earrings". Also her later efforts in "Rancho Notorious" and "Witness for the Prosecution" for which she should have been Oscar nominated. Mongo
  3. Saint or no saint DeMille was Mr. Showmanship and gave us some spectacular epics to oogle at. I believe he was a good and decent man in his heart and in those days the word Communist was a scary thing in America. Besides Elia Kazan didn't do too bad and walked away winning Oscars. I doubt if its revealed on the TCM special that Demille was involved in any of that stuff that his reputation as great moviemaker will be soiled. Afterall it was a part of history. I'm interested in the movies he made and how he made them, the stars and the spectacle of it all. Also his relationship with his son-in-law Anthony Quinn. Can't wait. Mongo
  4. Yeah leo, Stewart Grangers real name is James Stewart. Of course he had to change it because of that other guy. And yes LTL Ann Sheridan was a knockout! I have some pictures of her that would even make Boy George drool. And George Brent was kinda wooden mostly around to support all the leading divas of Hollywood. Mongo
  5. What about my gal Ann Sheridan who had to fight Warner Brothers tooth and nail for a decent part. She pleaded for her role in "Kings Row" and proved that she had what it takes. Yet as with Ida Lupino she still got Bette Davis hand-me-downs. Both Sheridan and Lupino definately fit this category. By the way I am also a big fan of Irene Dunne. I especially liked her work in "Show Boat", "Love Affair", "Penny Serenade", "A Guy Named Joe", "Life with Father" and "I Remember Mama". Good stuff. Mongo
  6. "City Lights" with Chaplin and a wonderful performance by Virginia Cherrill.
  7. "Splendor in the Grass" and "This Property Is Condemned".
  8. leo it has come to my attention that actor Herbert Marshall has gotten a bad rap on these boards. Perhaps because although a leading man he wasn't the handsome matinee idol type. However his acting credentials are outstanding supporting such star as Marlene Dietrich in "Blonde Venus", Bette Davis in both "The Letter" and "The Little Foxes" etc. I myself enjoy his performances very much as he added class to many films that he starred in. As far as Clifton Webb is concerned he is an all time favorite. He is a hoot in most of his films and can go dramatic with the best of them. Mongo
  9. In choosing between Gable and Cooper I did the same thing I did with Stewart and Grant by reviewing their list of films to see how many of each I enjoyed the most. Although it was close I wil go with Gable. It seems I like his macho man image toward the women opposed to Cooper's reserved approach. Both actors were adept in drama as well as in light comedy roles where Gable's expressions are priceless. Where Cooper played the easy going ideal soul most of the time Gable took chances with his attitude and didn't seem to give a hoot. I like that. In any event both actors were great in what they did and we are lucky to have them in the many fine roles they left us with. Mongo
  10. by your screen name it's easy to realize who you will choose. To be fair I haven't seen many of Keaton's films to date and I'm just getting into Chaplin with TCMs showing of his movies on Wednesday nights. With that said I will have to pass on this one although I like what I've seen of Chaplin thus far and I appreciate his genius. Mongo
  11. After researching the films of both Cary Grant and James Stewart I discovered that I enjoyed more of Stewarts' movies (more variety). With that I must choose Jimmy Stewart although both actors are tops in their field. Two of the very best that Hollywood had to offer. Mongo

  16. However in polls throughout the U.S. the movie going public voted unanimously for Clark Gable to play Rhett Butler during early preperation of the movie. Mongo
  17. Here are some interesting facts about Gable & Cooper. They were both born in the same year in 1901, Gable on February 1st. and Cooper on May 7th. (just 3 months apart). Gable died on November 16th 1960 at age 59 and Cooper died on May 13th 1961 at age 60 (just six days after his birthday). They died just six months apart from each other. Mongo
  18. OK here is the big one! Which one is it and why? Mancho man Clark Gable who captured hearts in "Gone With the Wind" and Gary Cooper the quiet American with high ideals in "High Noon", both Oscar winners and legends of the silver screen. Mongo
