  1. I totally agree with your praise of TCM this month. The August Under the Stars theme is delicious and most of the stars that are featured are priceless. Just imagine a favorite star performing all day in many favorite films intact, uncut and no commercials. Let's appreciate TCM while we got it since it is the very best of it's kind....anywhere. Mongo
  2. Moira I believe that Marilyn Maxwell appeared with Hope in "The Lemon Drop Kid" which is also a favorite of mine (the sonf "Silver Bells" was introduced in the movie). Lucille Ball appeared with Hope in "Sorrowful Jones" and "The Facts of Life". Mongo
  3. Your movie is "Imitation of Life". The original was made in the 1930's with Claudette Colbert and the remake was made in the late 1950's with Lana Turner. Mongo
  4. Sorry Johnnie, the song is only done once in the film. Mongo
  5. Rest assured that Director Steven Spielberg would have rescued Welles Oscar if it went on the auction block. Mr. Spielberg has bid and won past Oscars which he returns to the Academy no charge. Bless him. Mongo
  6. After all is said and done Bob Hope was laid to rest in the San Fernando Mission Cemetery although he was given access to Arlington Cemetery from President Bush, an honor he certainly deserved. Also laid to rest at San Fernando Mission Cemetery are Walter Brennan and Chuck Connors. May the great comedian and humaniterian rest in peace. Mongo
  7. Votgfey, I believe Joan Crawford played Sadie Thompson. Lil Abner was involved with Sadie Hawkins. Mongo
  8. Yes she was and just about every other actress in Hollywood. Paulette Gaddard came the closest to getting the part before Miss Leigh appeared on the scene. Mongo
  9. Astorlarry, the roadhouse is the dive that Bette Davis stopped at where she played the jukebox and wanted to cut loose. The following stars are gathered around the bar Bogart, Astor, Greenstreet, Peter Lorre, Ward Bond, Barton MacLane and Elisha Cook Jr. You have to be quick to catch a look at them (perhaps in slow motion). Walter Huston as the bartender is the most recognizable. Good luck. Mongo
  10. Yes indeed Moira, just about the whole cast were entertaining. Mary Wickes is a favorite of mine anyway and her nurse Nora was tops. Claude Rains seldom disappoints in a performance and was perfect as the doctor. Davis had a good idea about ending up with him knowing that she could only have the stars and not the moon with Jerry. However the script most likely followed the book. Also good was Bonita Granville who realized that her Aunt Charlotte was a gem afterall. And that child actress Janis Wilson as Tina gave a fine performance. Good stuff! Mongo
  11. I had a surprise treat this morning. On HBO Signature was the grand 1942 soaper "Now, Voyager" in all it's glory. Most important it was a pristine print in glorious black and white (no commercials of course). There was the outstanding Bette Davis as Charlotte Vale with a slight constipated look on her face (just love it), Paul Henreid as her lover Jerry and the magnificent Gladys Cooper as Charlottes mother, the stern dowager. All to the haunting strings of Max Steiner and that ending can't be beat. One of the most memorable films of the 1940s it "was" what Hollywood was all about. Mongo
  12. As a matter of fact he did. The movie was "Nick of Time" (1995) with Christopher Walken. Johnny Depp played a businessman whose little daughter is taken hostage and to get her back he must kill someone first. Good suspense. And Johnny wears a suit! Mongo
  13. The films "Slap Shot" with Paul Newman and "Rollerball" with James Caan ain't so bad either. Mongo
  14. Not to forget "The Natural" with Robert Redford and "Pride of the Yankees" with Gary Cooper. Gene Kelly, Esther Williams and Frank Sinatra can "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" anyday. Mongo
  15. I guess I can stand that nasal Bronx twang since I am from Brooklyn. And....oh, that fabulous bottom! Mongo
  16. Moviejoe, the film "Dinner at Eight" is a fixture on TCM and has been played many times. Keep your eyes peeled on the schedule and you will be surprised very soon. Mongo
  17. A posthumous birthday rememberance to the one and only Yankee Doodle Dandy. He certainly was a one of a kind actor and we are fortunate to be left with his fine body of work. I've been watching TCM's tribute to the actor today and enjoying every minute of it. Ironically, today actress Irene Manning is celebrating her 87th birthday. She played Fay Templeton opposite Cagney in "Yankee Doodle Dandy". HAPPY BIRTHDAY in Heaven Mr.Cagney! Mongo
  18. Then again I think about the fame and fortune some of them had (especially during the depression). The big cars, the hot-cha-cha nightclubs, romping all night, the palatial homes etc. George Sanders had his share of wine, women and song (good for him), Lupe Velez swung on the vines with Tarzan himself and might I add quite a few others (good for her), Carole Landis had her choice of most of the men in Hollywood and chose a married man (how unfortunate, should have known better in such a town), Crawford had her cake and ate it too (worked hard and reaped the rewards) and so on and so on. We should be so lucky to have just one day and night of such a life. A bit of paradise goes a long way. I'll go on enjoying their films, which is what is was all about in the first place and think about the good times. May they all rest in peace. Mongo
  19. P.S. Spencer I believe that one of Rathbone's Oscar nominations were in "If I Were King"? He should have been nominated for "David Copperfield" however there wasn't a supporting category yet. Mongo
  20. Other than Ingrid Bergman coming into her own in "Intermezzo" that fabulous year we also had Maureen O'Hara in Hitchcock's "Jamaica Inn" with Charles Laughton and Ida Lupino in "The Light That Failed" with Ronald Colman. And then there's the "Son of Frankenstein" which was lavishly made with wonderfully bizarre sets. Not to mention the outstanding performance of Bela Lugosi as Ygor. Mongo
  21. Not to forget that Sherlock Holmes with Basil Rathbone at the helm was introduced in 1939 with two films. Also the Tarzan series continued with "Tarzan Finds a Son" aka "Tarzan in Exile" which introduced Johnny Sheffield as Boy. Both Tarzan and Mr. Holmes were very popular and ran through the 1940s. Mongo
  22. Most of the sci-fi films of the 1950's were produced on a low budget at a second rate studio and like venerados stated they couldn't afford paying the high salaries of well known stars. However some of these movies made plenty of money for the studios. Mongo
  23. It's most likely a movie made for TV.
  24. June Allyson (of all people) was quite the heavy in "The Shrike" putting poor Jose Ferrer through the mill. Mongo
  25. Hilarious reply Slappy! I needed that laugh. Mongo
