Scenario: You walk onto a movie set (choice of era) and all of a sudden this movie star slowly turns around and your face to face. For a moment her beauty takes your breath away and your heart skips a beat. Who is she? For me she is Gene Tierney on the set of "Leave Her to Heaven" (1945). You can also use the same scenario for the ultimately handsome male star. Who is he? Mongo

I just happened to catch an episode of "The Waltons" recently on the Hallmark Channel and was glad I did. It was called "The Pony Cart" and featured a stunning performance by Beulah Bondi for which she won an Emmy Award. She played Martha Corinne a cantankerous 90 year old visiting the Waltons and upsetting their way of life routines although she means well. What a joy it was to see a pro at work while I was reminded of all the fine performances that she gave in close to 70 films. Her one big regret was not getting the role of Ma Joad in "The Grapes of Wrath" although the part was "almost" hers. It went to Jane Darwell of course. In 1977 she was the oldest Emmy winner ever. She received a tremendous ovation as she slowly made her way to the stage. Once there she thanked the Academy for honoring her "while I'm still alive". Miss Bondi died in 1981 and left a fine legacy of films in her path for us to enjoy over and over. Mongo

Themescules I just checked IMBd's cast listing for the movie "A Face in the Crowd" and you pal isn't listed under the name Ron Betrix. Soooooooooo he could be blowing it out his dittybag or he possibly used another name? Mongo

Spencer I was satisfied with most of the top ten villians on AFIs list with perhaps the exception of Darth Vadar which I thought was ranked too high. Otherwise it was fun seeing the clips and hearing from some of the stars of those films. Mongo
-
How about Brian Donlevy? Almost always a heavy which made the films he was in more interesting. An Oscar nominee for "Beau Geste" as the evil commander he just about stole the picture. Could also play the good guy which I believe he did in a film with the aforementioned Miss Ella Raines. That Donlevy fellow was quite an actor. Mongo

Nick sometimes your just too funny. Mongo

Those were good examples Moviejoe especially the movie "Fatso". I thought of some women on screen that ate with gusto including the wonderful Hope Emerson when she savoured those pancakes in "Cry of the City" with Richard Conte. Also delightful Ruth Gordon when she ate the cake in "Rosemary's Baby" even twisting the fork. I believe pancake and cake sales went sky high after these ladies demonstrated how meals can be enjoyed. Good stuff! Mongo

Whom else likes: "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid?"

It's good stuff with some great editing. I especially like the "Double Indemity" and "White Heat" segments not to mention the funny Steve Martin. Mongo -
While watching "The Best Years of Our Lives" recently I noticed another actor eating with gusto. Fredric March ate up the breakfast that Myrna Loy prepared for him the day after he returned from overseas. Too bad there was a shortage of cream and eggs though. Mongo

There are also Betty Grable and Harry James Barbara Stanwyck and Robert Taylor Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh Mongo

cataan, unfortunately many of Bob Hope's films were made for Paramount Studios including the "road" pictures and TCM don't have access to them. Although I believe AMC has some of them and I'm surprised they didn't pay tribute to this talented and funny man. It's really a disgrace, if you ask me. Mongo

Can't forget about "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" (1945) and "Pinky" with Jeanne Crain (1949). Mongo
-
Oh! Forgot one........"The Good Earth". Mongo
-
"The Grapes of Wrath" "Gone With the Wind" "The Best Years of Our Lives" "Sunset Boulevard" "All About Eve" "On The Waterfront" "Shane" "From Here to Eternity" "A Place in the Sun" "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" "The Yearling" "Double Indemnity" "A Tale of Two Cities" (1935) Mongo

I just watched Grable in "Mother Wore Tights" on AMC and she was quite the actress too (although she would take the compliment with a grain of salt). It was a very good film and co-star Dan Daily was a good match for her. Quite a girl that Betty Grable. Mongo
-
You are correct rio. Grable and the others you mention were under contract to 20th-Century Fox and that is why we seldom if ever see the beauty on TCM. Mongo
-
The name of the film is "I'll Never Forget You" (1951) which also starred Ann Blyth. Mongo
-
By the way Spencer it was movieloverny who introduced me to the word "snarky". And since "A Date with Judy" was such a big hit for MGM perhaps it COULD be considered to be an essential. Only kiddin'. Mongo
-
With about 60 films to his credit the handsome actor had appeal. I have some old movie magazines from the 1940s and Mr. Reagan is plastered all over the place in full page photos, stories and articles. Of his films my favorites are: "Brother Rat" '38 "Knute Rockne All American" '40 "Kings Row" '42 (his best performance) "Voice of the Turtle" '47 "John Loves Mary" '49 "The Hasty Heart" '49 "Storm Warning" '51 "The Winning Team" '52 "Prisoner of War" '54 The future president did well in his movie career. Mongo

Sorry if I was snarky (I love that word). I was just trying to make a point. It don't pay to be snarky since these boards are meant to enjoy movie trivia. Besides Sinatra and Brando don't even know we exist as did Miranda and Beery. Bless them all although I believe that Sinatra, Brando and Beery could be snarky at times. I'm not sure about Miranda. Have a good day everyone. Mongo
-
That it a witty observation movieloverny however I'm talking Brando and Sinatra two super stars with legend status appearing together only once in a musical no less. While Miranda was a delightful presence her tutti-frutti numbers were a fad that didn't last long and Beery did his best work in the 1030s before he faded into hokum. Get it? Mongo

Actor Ward Bond actually appeared in over 260 films which could be a record. He also holds the distinction of appearing in most of AFI's 100 Greatest American Films which is 7. Mongo
-
The movie "Guys and Dolls" is essential since it pairs Marlon Brando in a singing/dancing role alongside Frank Sinatra (and Jean Simmons ain't no slouch either). Mongo

While watching "The Magnificent Ambersons" (1942) on TCM I was impressed with Tim Holt who was eating with gusto at the dinner table. It was amazing how he kept scoffing down the food while Agnes Moorehead finally said don't eat so fast. I so tired of those stars that nibble a piece of crust off a sandwich, cut a weency piece of meat and drink from an empty cup. Mr. Holt showed us how to enjoy a meal like in real life. I just hope the scene was done in one take though since he would need an Alka Seltzer. Also it would have been a corker if he belched (or was that allowed in 1942?). Mongo

Just heard that actor and Oscar nominee Robert Stack died at age 84 on Wednesday. He is one of the last survivors from the heyday of Hollywood. He gave Deanna Durbin her first screen kiss in 1939 and was friends with the great ones including Clark Gable and James Stewart and he adored Carole Lombard. I was always hoping that Robert Osborne with snag him for his Private Screenings since he knew so much about the golden days of Hollywood and it's stars. His stories about those days were always facinating and he enjoyed telling them Alas it's too late. Mongo
