  1. The movie "The Good Earth" is one of my favorites. Big scale production did justice to Pearl Buck's epic novel.

Amazing is the fact that MGM built China on their back lots. It was the last film Production Chief and boy genius Irving G. Thalberg was involed with before he died. He was married to Norma Shearer at the time. The special effects are masterful especially the locust raid.

Luise Rainer is magnificent as Olan and certainly deserved her Oscar. It is indeed a great motion picture.

  3. Great flick. I don't believe it was ever on video which will make it differcult to obtain.

I get a kick out of the scene when Eileen Heckart is teaching Shirley Booth how to smoke and drink in order to add a little zip to her life. Otherwise it's a family in turmoil with a sad ending.

  4. Addition:

Also I've read that a few books was supposed to be written about his life which never surfaced. Actor Russ Tamblyn for one mentioned he was researching a book some years ago and someone recently on the boards stated the same. In the meantime the only mini bio of him appears in one of those Hollywood Babylon books. Ugh.

  5. I've read so many different accounts of Bobby Driscoll's life and downfall and sometime you wonder what is fact or fiction.

I read that Disney funded the search for Driscoll when his mother was worried about his where-a-bouts. It's also strange that all those stagehands and honcho's he was so kind to didn't spit to have his body moved to his families buriel site. I also understand that his body was surrounded by drug paraphernalia.

I doubt if we will ever know what really happened during his time in New York and his eventual end in an old tenement.

No doubt he was one of the most appealing child actors on the silver screen and did not deserve such an end to his young life.

  6. OK who watched blonde bombshell Kim Novak on Larry King Live last night? She looked just fine for a woman who will be 71 next month and that voice is still divine.

It was a candid interview about her husbands, flings, films, likes and dislikes. She actually didn't prefer to have children and has a great love for animals especially horses (also had a pet snake). She regretted passing on the role that Piper Laurie was Oscar nominated for in "The Hustler" since she felt who would be interested in a movie about playing pool. Jack Lemmon passed on the Paul Newman role since he thought the same reason.

Scenes from "Picnic", "The Man With the Golden Arm", "Kiss Me Stupid", "Pal Joey", "Vertigo" etc were shown. She adored Hitchcock as well as most of her leading men Sinatra, Holden, Lemmon, Tyrone Power and especially James Stewart.

She took calls from her fans and answered all questions to their satisfaction.

A nostalgic interview indeed and kudos to Larry King for presenting this magic hour which often feature stars of the golden age of movies.

Other than her precious animals she loves to paint and sculpture. The former blonde movie actress likes to keep busy. It was nice seeing Kim Novak again in all her glory.
