  1. I don't wish to hear it either. It should be interesting when Pollack introduces the essential film "On the Waterfront" directed by Elia Kazan since Kazan ratted out

Polonsky during the witch hunt trials and it was differcult for him to find work and support his family.

When Kazan got his special Oscar Polonsky was hoping that someone would shoot him. Both men are now dead.

I just wonder if Pollack has the balls to rip into Kazan during the introduction of the film?

  2. Adition:

Born this day actor Steve Buscemi 46. This era's wacky madman ala Jack Elam and Richard Widmark. He is in "Miller's Crossing" (underrated film), "Billy Bathgate", "Reservoir Dogs" (cult movie), "Fargo" (a real wacko), "The Wedding Singer", "Mr.Deeds" etc.

Was a New York City Fireman for four years. He showed up at his old firehouse the day after 9/11 to volunteer. He worked 12 hour shifts for a week after the terrorist act digging through for survivors.

  3. I had heard that Carole Lombard was dissatisfied with Gable's staying power which probably also annoyed Joan Crawford.

Agnes Moorehead and Debbie Reynolds were close friends...

and thats the extent of it.

Lon Chaney Jr. did canoodle with his young pretty co-stars and most likely scored at times. He was also a heavy drinker throughout most of his life.

  4. Classicsfan the picture of Gable was taken after he enlisted in the service. My uncle was in his company during training and said that the officers gave him a hard time (big movie star) although he was really a regular guy and would later be appreciated. He scrubbed the floors and latrines and didn't hesitate to remove his false teeth in the washroom.

The picture included some other guys in the shower area where it looked like they were all clowning around.

Since the picture didn't seem to surface throughout the years its apparent the guys remained sacred to Gable and respected him highly.

Years later my aunt and uncle moved to Michigan and both died there. The picture? Who knows? In my teens at the time I saw the picture I didn't think of getting a copy made. However out of respect for the king of Hollywood perhaps it was for the best.

  6. My, my this stuff should have been in "Hot Topics" in a plain brown envelope.

Although hot stuff is good stuff most of it is likely exaggerated hearsay and rumors throughout the years.

My aunt had a picture of Gable in the raw and believe me

he was far from being a Queen.

Also I just can't imagine Bette Davis uttering such words

since she struck me as the type that would dare to try it on for size and effect.

Another rumor about Gable is when he was just getting started and most likely in order to give his career a boost he was serviced by director George Cukor. Years later when he was making "Gone With the Wind" it was apparent that those memories resurfaced and he wanted

Cukor removed from the film. Director Victor Fleming

was signed to take over the movie while Cukor was let go. The reason given was that Gable wasn't satisfied with a "woman's" director. Viven Leigh and Olivia de Havilland were upset since they admired Cukor.

Take it for what its worth folks.

  7. When I noticed the favorite composers thread I checked it out and I recall posting plaudets to Max Steiner and my post wasn't listed. Lo-and-behold I discovered this thread lying dormant which has some very interesting tid-bits regarding the masters who made the music.

  9. I wish it was her, sandy. It would be like old times again. Alix checks in every so often but so many others didn't return to the boards. Jeryson is now Pattypancake!

When there was an overhaul at TCM I came back as bansi instead of Mongo (don't ask me how that happened).

Oh well, what can you do?

  10. Nick when Bette Davis arrived in Hollywood in 1930 she went to Universal, RKO and then Warner Brothers. There is no mention of MGM. I doubt that the Davis/Crawford feud started that early so I don't believe it was spite work on MGMs part.

Her appearance in the Christmas short is not mentioned in her bio at all.

  11. Hello to you too Spencer. We missed ya. That's good news about the stamp especially since the art work is from a family member. I got all the other movie star stamps and will be sure to get Spencer Tracy in April. Thanks.

    "The Grapes of Wrath" #128

    "Gone With the Wind" #132

While the following films rated much higher:

    "Lord of the Rings" #4

    "Star Wars" #10

    "Pulp Fiction" #18

  13. bggalaxy I also noticed a difference since I saw her on the quiz show "Pyramid". The cameras didn't show her standing up at all and usually they do as the players go on to the big money round. When the show returned after the commercials she was already seated each time. It makes me wonder how Annette Funicello is doing these days with that terrible disease.
