  1. Birthday wishes to the one and only bubbly Betty Hutton who is 82 years old today.

Since her film "Annie Get Your Gun" (1950) has been released on video over a year ago I was wondering when TCM will show it on TV since they own the MGM archive?

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY MISS HUTTON!

  2. WOW! What a great assortment of films many of which are seldom mentioned on the boards. It sure would be nice to see some of these gems again and for the first time.

Take heed TCM and search deeper in those vaults.

Here are some more movies from 1950:

    "Father of the Bride"

    "King Solomon's Mines"

    "Harvey"

    "Panic in the Streets"

    "The Men" early Brando

    "The Furies"

"Samson and Delilah" Lamarr & Mature in lush plush color

"Cinderella" Disney enchantment. Great artwork & songs

"The Glass Menagerie" good effort but seldom seen

"Cheaper by the Dozen" Webb is priceless as the matriarch

    "Young Man With a Horn"

"Three Came Home" Colbert never fails

"The Jackpot" underrated James Stewart comedy

  3. It is often said that the year 1939 was the best year for movies with such classics as "Gone With the Wind", "The Wizard of Oz", "Wuthering Heights", "Stagecoach", "Of Mice and Men", "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" etc.

What year do you think produced the best movies and feel free to list your favorites.

I will go with the year 1950:

    "All About Eve"

    "Born Yesterday"

    "Sunset Boulevard"

    "Caged"

    "The Asphalt Jungle"

    "Mister 880"

    "The Third Man"

    "The Gunfighter"

    "Annie Get Your Gun"

    "Broken Arrow"

  4. Uh oh, it looks like your hot to trot Moira. And I thought I had a question that would stump the panel.

    Congratulations.

By the way Anton Karas had a hit record with "The Third Man Theme".

OK coffeedan you can come out from behind that snow pile.

  5. It's a wrap! Actor Kevin Spacey is set to play the late great singer Bobby Darin. Filming will begin in June and Spacey is also directing. He has also sent letters to Sandra Dee and Darin's son Todd that the project will be treated with respect and that their images will appear in the film.

  6. Thank you pattypancake. I know for sure I will be visiting the grave of the Wizard of Oz himself Frank Morgan since he is resting in Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn where my family members were laid to rest. I got his plot number from IMDB.

I'll be sure to say a little prayer to both Frank and Monty from members of the TCM message boards.

  7. Don't forget next month on TCM is the Oscar salute to all those wonderful films and stars that were either nominated or won the award.

Other than the big films I always enjoy the award winning shorts and mini interviews with former winners. I hope they have some new stuff this March. Should be fun.

  8. I plan to take a trip to Brooklyn (my home town) and will attempt to visit Monty's grave near Prospect Park. Although it doesn't have a marker I heard that the attendent will point it out for you. It's the least I could do for a guy that entertained to the best of his ability in some mighty fine films of at least 6 were my favorites.

  9. I recall many years ago in Brooklyn a TV station ran a show called "Saturday Afternoon at the Bijou" and it was just like being at the neighborhood movie.

They showed two features, cartoons, a Three Stooges or Little Rascals short, a chapter of a serial and prevues of coming attractions. It was good stuff and an idea that TCM should incorporate.

  10. I have to take exception to the fact that you thought Luise Rainer's Oscar win for "The Good Earth" was atrocious. She was absolutely brilliant as Olan and certainly deserved the award over the wan and dying Garbo.

I'll agree that her Oscar for "The Great Ziegfeld" wasn't warrented.

I also have the feeling that diva Garbo would not have showed up if she won the Oscar ala diva K. Hepburn.

Garbo also refused the AFI salute in her honor at which time Bette Davis stepped in. Thank heavens.

  11. The new feature Movie News ain't so bad. If you notice most of the previews revolve around films of nostalgia ala "Chicago" and most recently Ricardo Montalban. Also

news of vintage films coming to DVD such as "Mildred Pierce", "All About Eve", "Gentlemans Agreement" etc.

Its safe to say that TCM is keeping within their format.

  12. Captain I watched the show and found it most enjoyable.

Although Matthew Broderick didn't match Robert Preston's dynamic Harold Hill he still held his own. Broderick brings a sly, impish and boyish charm to the role and his voice is adequate.

Broadway star Kristin Chenoweth was just about perfect as Marian while the rest of the cast were just fine.

The sets, costumes and choreography were right on target.

Of course the score was and still is the shows highlight with the rousing "Seventy Six Trombones" leading the way.

And that barbershop quartet sure could harmonize.

A grand musical presentation which I hope opens the door for others especially since the movie "Chicago" is doing socko.

  13. Joe we didn't forget about Garland and Monroe since they lead the list of self destructive stars. Both women have remained in the limelight througout the years where as many of the other unfortunates were forgotten.
