BRONXGIRL'S MOTHER, HENRY FONDA'S HIRSUTENESS, ETC.
MissGoddess replied to Bronxgirl48's topic in Films and Filmmakers
Don't feel too bad, I'm notoriously slack at checking the schedules myself. But last night was good. I missed recording some of the later ones, especially *Desperate Journey* which I especially wanted to record as I'd seen it before. Jane and Patricial Medina are rivals for Howard Keel, against an interesting backdrop of wilderness rescue planes in Alaska (?). There's a babes-lost-in-the-woods subplot to keep you on edge and it's an entertaining, if not deep, film. I thought it interesting that Keel's ex (Medina) and Greer looked rather similar. Medina plays an ace pilot, every bit as capable as the men, which you might appreciate. I've never seen the one with Dick Powell. I do like Jane Greer more and more. I even enjoyed *The Big Steal* more than I ever did before when I used to compare it unfavorably to *Out of the Past*. If you stop doing that and just take the movie on its own merits, it's fun, if not nearly so complex and dark as the former film. -

OH T I was so sure you would have watched all the Greer movies last night, especially *The Company She Keeps* which I really want your opinion on !! I wrote about it in the Walk on the Noir Side thread, hoping someone would eventually watch it as I think it's a good comparison to *Shockproof*, the other movie about a female parolee. -
I first became aware of James Drury when he played the pretty blonde maid's boyfriend in Disney's Pollyanna! Have a peek:

Well I'm not ashamed to go "hog wild" here and say "The Colter Craven Story" is my FAVORITE of all the Wagon Trains I've seen. I'm still teared up over certain scenes and can't get over how much story was packed into his episode...enough for three shows! It was fun to spot all the Fordian touches, lovely to see the "family" gathered, and to spot John Wayne just by his silhouette and gait even before he spoke. I loved how the show was balanced with exciting action sequences with the wagons (smoothly edited with takes from *Wagon Master*) and the more intimate kind of scenes that leave one satisfied emotionally. I think it was Scott Eyman who said Ford would have been ideal for television in that he know how to get things done fast and this show certainly demonstrated he could pack a lot into a short time slot, which he know doubt honed all those years ago doing the short silents with his brother. Too bad Francis was, I believe, already gone by the time this show was made, he's the only thing really missing.

Oooh, thank you ! Now I'm craving one for real!

I guess it would be a giant bar of Swiss or Belgian milk chocolate. I think I could eat a pound.

I'm not big on American candies, but I do admit I like Reese's Peanut Butter cups and Mounds. I can't have one of either or I'll want ten more.

I'm really looking forward to it as it's one of the few existing Ford productions I've never seen. I don't expect it to be that great, but the series as a whole so far has been a big hit for me. This will be the icing on top!

Great picture! I know what you mean about *Hotel*...that Kevin McCarthy was just about the slimiest thing I ever saw. When he smiled, he rattled! That disgusting open shirt! I kept wanting to scream at him or someone to BUTTON UP!
-
My excel list includes Title, Genre, Year, Director, and Principal stars (Or whoever I'm most interested in the cast). It would be interesting to add writers. Hmmmm.

Great pic! but you know, my favorite leading man for Jane isn't Vic...it's the MITCH. I simply love *His Kind of Woman* which is on now. I'm even looking forward to *Young Widow* later today, a nothing little movie that I really enjoyed. I couldn't tell you why, I just did. It seemed to capture that time during WWII. Sometimes, for me, the best movies aren't timeless, but what people call "dated", little time capsules of their era.

* Am I Periwinkle Blue now? That's my favorite color!* Then it's definitely your color from now on. I hope Ro likes *blue*, she'll have to let me know what her favorite is. Mine is *orange*. Wow, just as wrote this post Merle Oberon showed up in Hotel in a periwinkle blue suit! Edited by: MissGoddess on Jun 20, 2011 8:43 PM

*Jackie*, you're right about the main story in *Follow the Fleet*, it's on the predictable side and Randy plays a particularly obnoxious fellow. But the sight of Fred asleep in that phone booth with the monkey just about makes up for it, for me! :^0 *Ro*---I think we might all lay odds on what side of the fence Frank will fall as to his liking or not liking *San Francisco*. I predict he likes Gable but is so-so on the story and hates the ending.

Yay, Roddie! -
Even as a boy he had "it". The personification of the term, "handsome devil". I love the picture with Olivia where they are sitting on the prop cart. So cute.

Jackie, I actually do have hope Frank will like the Fred/Ginger musicals more than he thinks he will. They are genuinely funny and I think Fred is genuinely funny. Like you, *Top Hat* is a super favorite, though I think he also might like *Follow the Fleet* aside from the leading lady's (not Ginger) singing interludes.

*The Mitchum/Kerr film is a completely different and superior film with no connection to this oater....* Sounds like you like The Sundowners, fredsie? Glad to see another fan of it, I really like it the more and more I see it. A real "slice of life" and though it's not a western at all...it kind of feels like one sometimes. Anyway, the life is very "rough" and rugged, but honest and the people real characters (love Peter Ustinov and Glynis Johns).

Wow, I never even heard of that one! I was kind of wondering when you mentioned Robert Preston...I figured I must have forgotten that he was in it, ha.

I really like Misha, he breaks me up in *My Man Godfrey* and *Destry Rides Again*.

Any fans of character actor - j. Farrell macdonald?
MissGoddess replied to Farrellmacdonald's topic in Your Favorites
I love him. He was wonderful in *Riley the Cop*. -
I love *The Gay Bride*! I think it's one of Carole's best, lesser known films and her character's bickering with square-jaw Chester Morris is pretty funny. I think Frank would like it, too. And I do recommend *Love Before Breakfast*, the movie and on general grounds.

oh my, just as Tall T and Rohanaka get my strength up, now these guys come along and bring it right back down again. At least it's for a good cause. Thank you and tell Gilbertito the door is always open.

*Big Brown Eyes is the first comedy I've seen with Joan. It's a romantic comedy with crime as the backdrop. I liked it. I also want to watch the other Cary/Joan film I have.* It sounds cute. I've only watched a couple of Cary's early, early movies and they didn't do much for me, but I haven't seen the ones with Joan. He looks like he's already got his "persona" down in *Big Brown Eyes* so I'm sure I'll enjoy it. The only other comedies of Joan's I've seen are *The Housekeeper's Daughter* (not funny) and the ones with Spence and Elizabeth. I don't like her character at all in those two. It's not her fault, it's the intent of the script. I just find her and Spence so sexless and it hurts my enjoyment of the movie. If they could have let Joan be less of a "manager" and more of a woman, I'd probably love those movies to death because Spencer is just amazingly funny in them. It's strange because I do like Barbara Billingsly and Hugh Beaumont in "Leave it to Beaver", and they are a couple that to me have the same vibe as Spence and Joan in their movies. I wonder why I like the one scenario, and not the other.
