  1. Hi Randy---Bob did interview the delightful Jane Russell, in tandem with her buddy Robert Mitchum. However, Big-Bad-Bob was in a taciturn mood and Osbourne had his hands full trying to elicit responses. Thankfully, Jane was there to take the edge off. What we need is all these Private Screenings on dvd in a set. Miss G
  2. Sophia! That would be heavenly! She does do interviews, but in one case that I saw, it was a shameful waste of her time. There is a talk-show host in England, I can't remember his name, but he looks like he's in his 'thirties, and he had La Loren on a few years ago. He asked the stupidest, most embarrassing questions to this Oscar-winning legend, like, what does she bathe in????? I almost went thru the TV screen to throttle the low class little idiot. Bob! Please get Sophia on your show and ask intelligent, classy questions! Miss G
  3. I'd love to see Doris but I've given up hoping she'll come forward. I think the last interview she did was several years ago...in England. *sigh* It's such a shame, because she is so bright and articulate and could share a multitude of insights on the studio system. Miss G
  4. When you say Old Heidelberg was Lubitsch's best film, you make my mouth positively water! He's one of my top 3 favorite directors and I've never seen this particular film. Golly, makes me want to fly all the way out to Frisco just for it! The press release did make mention of a "tribute" to TCM, so perhaps there is some involvement, and perhaps TCM may want to push for the restoration and dvd release of this film??????????? *hint* *hint* Anyway, if anyone gets to attend this festival, I hope they'll share their perceptions. Miss G
  5. [nobr]They could have renamed Rooster Cogburn, "Clash of the Titans"![/nobr] [nobr] [/nobr]
  6. [nobr]I think you will love Apartment for Peggy, Theresa. Jeanne's character is so funny---she's just this optimistic little chatterbox for whom nothing is an obstacle and there are silver linings all over the place. At first, people are annoyed with her, like Edmund Gwynn who becomes her landlord, and then they fall under her bright spell and realize she's right! William Holden plays her husband and I just wish Fox would get off its duff and put this gem on DVD![/nobr] [nobr]Fox Movie Channel does play it---but you really have to watch their schedule since the good movies---the pre-70s stuff---tends to air in the early week-days. If I hear of its next airing, I'll try to notify you.[/nobr] [nobr] [/nobr]
  7. [nobr]Roddy's "Hew Morgan" in How Green Was My Valley was one of the best performances by anybody, child or adult. He really touched one's heart.[/nobr] [nobr]That scene, where the boys have just had an argument with their father and have left the dinner table, leaving just Donald Crisp at the head, little Roddy waaaay down at the other end, just tears me up! When Roddy tries to make noises to get his Pa's attention, and Crisp, such a great actor! says quietly, "Yes my son. I know that you are there." And Roddy smiles happily. Perfection! John Ford was a genius![/nobr] [nobr]OK, enough gushing. [/nobr] [nobr] [/nobr] [nobr]You know, it's funny you compared Roddy to Gary because there is a certainl resemblance to both as boys...here's one of a young GC, second from the left:[/nobr] [nobr] [ obr]
  8. [nobr]I love The Cowboy and the Lady! That may be my favorite of all his romantic comedies, though I adore Desire, too---have you seen that one? Here's a pic from The Cowboy & The Lady:[/nobr] [nobr] [/nobr]
  9. Gregory Peck was superb as "Atticus Finch", a role he will always be associated with. I'd love to have had a dad like that.
  10. Yes I did---thanks for bumping this thread up---and I did enjoy it. A different sort of role for Donlevy, and an unusual movie all around. I thank you all for the recommendation!
  11. [nobr]Hi Dawn! This is actually my favorite John Wayne movie of all. I have a real sentimental soft spot for it. I purchased the dvd from Harry Carey, Jr.'s website, which includes a little making of featurette. Duke produced this movie himself, as you may know. [/nobr] [nobr]I think along with Maureen O'Hara, Gail Russell is my favorite of his leading ladies. She really brings out the tender, protective side of him---in fact she did so in real life. She said he was one of the only men in Hollywood who never tried to use her and he was a devoted friend to the fragile actress until her untimely death.[/nobr] [nobr] [/nobr]
  12. I really do like your choices, too. Jose Ferrer's "Cyrano" just ripped my heart out. Great, great performance. And I think Kate and Duke made an odd couple that truly clicked. She had gumption to spare, that one did, and always the last word! Miss G
  13. Hi otterhere, While I do wish Olivier had stayed with Viv, I think his reasons for leaving were more complicated, not really for Joan Plowright. Vivien's emotional and mental state had really deteriorated to an appalling degree and to his credit, he admitted to feeling like an absolute cad for leaving her. Yes, it was selfish, but it may be she needed the kind of help that sadly wasn't available at that time. Not many men are the kind of stuff that can take care of a woman in that condition 24 hours a day. Certainly not major stage and screen stars. Miss G
  14. Shonna, sounds like you and Ava would be battling for your men!
  15. Lol! I only learned in the last few years of Ricardo's significant career in film before his memorable television roles. P.S. Let us not forget, he put "Corinthian Leather" (roll your "R's" when you say it!) in the vernacular!
  16. I love Apartment for Peggy, too! Her chatty character cracks me up and I love her boundless optimism. It's a shame her career didn't go on just as her beauty was really only growing and growing but as you say, tastes were changing and she also had quite a family to raise I understand. Miss G
  17. I'd love to see Many Rivers to Cross and hopefully it will turn up on TCM, if it's not on dvd.
  18. Well that shows how much I know about fighting because I thought he looked very convincing! But I really just watch these films for the drama outside of the ring.
  19. [nobr]Interesting question! I might choose Gary Cooper's portrayal of Doctor Wassell. This was a real person who saved many of his wounded soldiers during WWII when they were all but left to die on an island in the Pacific. "Dr. Wassell", being a healer, is determined to do anything to protect and save life, and that makes him truly heroic in my eyes. Gary Cooper played so many heroes but this is probably the one I admire the most.[/nobr] [nobr]Coop's "Dr Wassell" tries to ease Philip Ahn's pain[/nobr] [nobr] [nobr][/nobr] [nobr]Heroine----the first that comes to my mind may seem an odd choice, but I really admire the character of "Beth Morgan" in How Green Was my Valley, as portrayed by Sara Allgood. I never saw a fiercer love for family in any matriarch and I can only hope I would have half the goods to defend my kin as she did.[/nobr] [nobr]Sara Allgood's "Beth Morgan" with her littlest son "Hew", the narrator of How Green was my Valley, played by Roddy MacDowell[/nobr] [nobr]
  20. As you can see I'm a fan of the sterner/naughtier side of Coop. Garden of Evil is beautifully photographed western shot in color on location in Mexico and costars Susan Hayward, Richard Widmark, and Hugh Marlowe. Coop is stranded with a bunch of ne'er-do-wells (that includes Coop himself) in a seedy little Mexican port when Susan Hayward shows up and asks them to help her rescue her husband (Hugh Marlowe), who's been trapped in their gold mine. She offers them gold if they'll help her and being greedy they agree, each hoping to get her and the whole mine. On the long journey to the mine they all make a play for her except Coop, who by now is showing himself to be far finer in character than the rest of them. I won't give away anymore than that but there is lots of action and the ending does have a bit of twist, so if you get a chance to see it I highly recommend it. Henry Hathaway directed. Miss G
  21. It's been a while since I've seen The Return of Frank James, so I don't recall many details, just that it was as good as the original, excepting the fact that I miss Tyrone Power's presence. Wish I'd taped it. I will next time it airs on FMC.
