  1. I couldn't resist!!!! 1000th POST on our very own GC. [nobr]Sing on, Gary![nobr] [nobr][nobr]
  2. I hope the Philips is fine, I'm sure it will be since it has come recommended and most of the comments on Amazon.com were positive. Anyway, it will do for now. I was as slow to get my first vcr as I was with getting a dvd player. My Mom refused flat out to get one because she didn't want me watching any more TV than I alread did, so I had to wait until I moved out on my own. But it was scary how quickly I built up a vhs collection of classic movies, most of which I threw away when I moved to Europe. I still regret tossing some especially rare films that used to air only on A&E Network. Miss G
  3. The best thing to happen would be the releasing of that big set on R1. Let's hope!!
  4. > Tomorrow at, I think, like 1:00 am??? But that's > okay; I can record it, too!!! I think it's a great > "life lesson" for women. She passes up the nice guy > and chooses the bad boy and what does it get her? > Another year older and heartache... Very sad. Thanks, and I agree.
  5. > Nope shouldn't notice it too much except maybe > slightly in voices but it does take a pretty fine > tuned ear that many people do not notice at all. Whew! That's a relief because I was getting worried. Thanks.
  6. I have a Sony dvd player currently and have been very happy with it. The new one I ordered to be region free is a Philips. It wasn't too expensive so if it doesn't work I will return it with no real harm done. I prefer Sony overall.
  7. I have it recorded and it's a terrific movie, (but very sad). When is TCM airing it?
  8. > If my Mom was Beulah Bondi she would have kicked my > butt. Ingrate Stewart, had to told by Abe Lincoln > that he's a lousy son. Good film...First time I saw > it was yesterday.. > Lol! Mine would have too!!
  9. > > That region 2 is just too pricey for me and want to > wait for the region 1 releases of hers because of the > PAL 4 percent speedup of movies where they run > slightly faster than what they were intended to: > > http://www.michaeldvd.com.au/Articles/PALSpeedUp/PALSp > eedUp.asp I've heard about this before, but not so often that I thought it was really that noticable. I mean, if it is that bad wouldn't something have been done? I will be getting both my new all-region player and an R2 dvd of The Tamarind Seed hopefully next week, and can see what happens. I hope I don't notice this difference in speed or I'm going to be disappointed big time.
  10. I have similar concerns about dvds of Morocco that are out there. I have yet to buy any of those Glamour Collections because of their reportedly dubious quality. The R2 Marlene set seems to be of much higher quality, I just can't get past the price and am hesitating, in case it may turn up on R1. As for the Lombard set, it is still on my wish list as it contains a couple of titles I have never seen. I don't want to own a poor quality dvd of Morocco. I'm happy to stick with my vhs recording if it's all that's available. This, and Shanghai Express are two Dietrich/von Sternberg films that just cry out for restoration and a Criterion-quality release, a la The Scarlet Empress. They are such beautiful films, like jewels, really. Miss G
  11. The sets are actually gorgeous for Morocco, because this was Von Sternberg and he had such an eye for detail that is amazing. You will see what I mean. It's what I call a "movie movie", in that it is pure cinematic fantasy in the best sense of the word. Coop and Marlene don't fall in love so much as "dance" around each other; both are of the same type---cynical and cautious but are irrisistibly drawn t one another. GC and JW are the only two of her co-stars who never seemed to be overwhelmed by her, but match and even dominate her. Can't wait to see what you think of it.
  12. Yes, one definitely should see at least parts of more than just a single movie (and that one not his best) before making a choice. For example, people have to use a fork-lift to get me to a Johnny Depp, Jack Nicholson or Brad Pitt movie, but that's after seeing what they've done over a period of time and I was able to conclude it's just "not for me". Miss G
  13. [nobr]Lol! Hilarious story about Garden of Evil....golly, I wish I had his ability to [nobr][nobr]drop off to sleep so easily. I have to be in my own bed and even then I [nobr]have insomnia.[nobr] [nobr]Yes, TGDAD has plot holes big enough to drive that train through but I [nobr]love the over-the-top tone of it, because it reminds me of the Von Sternberg films with Dietrich---and plus, Madeleine Carrol is so beautiful. Is the Dietrich set [nobr]you bought the deluxe Universal France (R2) set, or the smaller Region 1[nobr] set? Because I am sorely tempted to get the absurdly pricey Region 2 set [nobr]for the titles that aren't on R1.[nobr] [nobr]Morocco is my favorite Dietrich film so having Gary in it makes it a [nobr]double-whammy![nobr] [nobr]Miss G[nobr] [nobr][nobr]
  14. Thank you, Dan---I put it in my calendar and will remind myself to remind myself!
  15. I love "talky" pictures so I like it, principally for Robert Ryan. He's too good to be true sometimes, I love this actor. HIs character is so cynical that I would have just laughed at him, in Myrna's place. She took him too seriously and I think people like that need to be jogged out of themselves. He was crying out to be proven wrong (which is why he relented in the end) and that would have happened sooner if everyone stopped being so afraid of him and taking him so seriously. Of course, then you wouldn't have half of the movie! Miss G
  16. I think this is a beautiful movie, too. Everyone is great in it and it's so moving. As you say, it feels like it could turn into "too much" but it never does.
  17. Movies of Gary's I could watch every day if I had the time: (they're odd choices, I know!) Garden of Evil, Morocco, Saratoga Trunk and The General Died at Dawn. I could easily add to this list. Miss G
  18. Thanks, BHF, for the clarification on spacing---I'm still getting the hang of it!! I think Kelly is dressed that way because that is how Lautrec painted the figure, and, presumably, he painted a real dancer who was actually wearing those light colors. I agree it looks rather suggestive! But, remember, this was Paris. Miss G
  19. Marvelous pictures, Mrs C....I love the one where he is helping the little old lady cut the cake. They're all adorable, and some I've never seen.
  20. It's hard to resist watching our favorites in anything! Another case in point: I really have never liked the tales of Alice in Wonderland, but was just enchanted by Gary's "Awkward Knight".
  21. I was wondering - what > is the French painting he acted out in the Dance > movie and what is the act where he is in the French > bar and his dance partner dies? Is this the same > dance as in Can Can? [nobr]If you mean the one pictured below, it's from a Toulouse Lautrec painting and if I remember correctly, the dance is a variation of the "danse apache".[nobr] [nobr][nobr]
  22. > Did you ever watch The Fastest Gun Alive with > Glenn Ford? Yes, I have and I liked it. It seemed like a "Satuday Matinee" type of western, very bold in tone and one which kids would really have enjoyed. Glenn Ford's always good and frankly, I seldom saw Jeanne Crain look better. Miss G
  23. BHF---For Me and My Gal reminded me strongly of Pal Joey. Since Gene didn't get to play it on screen it seems like MGM gave him a "substitute" with a similar, caddish character. Have you seen Gene in Marjorie Morningstar? It is a similar character he plays, but with much more depth and not the typical ending. I hope TCM airs it. Miss G
  24. Great post, as usual, Anne. I quite agree about that quality in Duke's characterizations.
  25. TC is the film that turned around my opinion of Margaret Sullavan as a rather snippy, old-maidish actress (I first saw her in The Shop Around the Corner and her character bothered me. I have since changed my mind). She was terribly "gallant" in TC and it impressed me, her quiet, holding back in the scenes when Robert Taylor or one of the other boys were talking. The way she would watch them or become lost in a thought of her own that translated so well on screen, won me over and made me revise my opinion entirely. It's F. Scott Fitgerald's only credited screenplay and it feels like it. His pathos and way with words is most evident in Sullavan's lines. It is a very melancholy movie, but first rate. I watched some of it today at work in on one of the TVs we have here. Everyone laughed at my "rapt face". Hee! Miss G
