  1. Frequent Gary Cooper leading lady *Fay Wray* will be the subject of a new documentary as well as a special screening of her first starring role, Eric Von Stroheim's The Wedding March (1927), here in New York at the Film Forum in honor of what would have been her 100th birthday. Here is an article about the documentary (I wonder if she said anything about Gary?):

And the filmforum link, which in turn has links to other articles at the bottom:

P.S. Fay Wray was married to screenwriter Robert Riskin, who we just discussed.

  2. ChiO---I've really enjoyed reading your posts since you joined us, and if you say *King of Comedy* and *After Hours* are worth a peak, I will consider adding them to my Netflix queue (though Jerry Lewis directed by Martin Scorcese is a tough sell. In fact, Jerry Lewis directed by anyone except a traffic cop is a tough sell for me.). And yes, the bloodiness is exactly what turns me off in Marty's films, that and his incessant, albeit sometimes creative, use of one particular expletive.

  3. Thanks, FG, for that sparkling picture of Miss Lana Turner, and of all the other lovely images.

Well, here is how they line up:

  4. "His philosophy, in addition to scaring the wits out of people, was that he had a responsibility to the millions who saw our pictures. He aimed at more than mere exploitable crook shows, and wanted their impact to result from legitimate psychological conflicts. Lewton's pictures were cheaply made, but not cheap."

    Director Robert Wise,

  5. He is mentioned promininently in "Puttin' on the Ritz" -

    Have you seen the well-to-do

    Up and down Park Avenue

    On that famous thoroughfare

With their noses in the air

    High hats and narrow collars

White spats and lots of dollars

    Spending every dime

    For a wonderful time

    Now, if you're blue

And you don't know where to go to

Why don't you go where fashion sits

    Puttin' on the Ritz

Different types who wear a daycoat

Pants with stripes and cutaway coat

    Perfect fits

    Puttin' on the Ritz

*Dressed up like a million dollar trooper

Trying hard to look like Gary Cooper

    Super-duper*

    Come, let's mix where Rockefellers

    Walk with sticks or "umberellas"

    In their mitts

    Puttin' on the Ritz

  6. >>>Although Bob started going broke at the end of the Lana marriage and Lana was supporting him and all his businesses eventually.

Lana's mother finally told her, "Divorce him, you can't afford to keep a millionaire!!"<<<

It seemed like no matter how promising her prospects with the next marriage looked, it turned into a disaster! Who'd think a *millionaire* would end up a pecuniary burden. A girl has always had to look sharp before she lept, that's one thing I've learned from Lana. Of course, today she would have been armed with a drawer full of Pre-nups.

Love your stories, Larry, they are such a treat.

  7. >>> I think that of all the movie genres, comedies have gotten the worst in recent years. <<<

Amen to that. They all seem to be of the juvenile male variety or so off-beat they are un-funny.

By the way, that was a very nice montage, Angie. :)

  8. >>>Miss G(loria) -- I just love entering this thread. Do you mind if I stay the night here? Gloria & Gene are hard to leave. <<<

Door's always open to you Frank. But I hope you're not too tall---the sofa gets uncomfortable for anyone over 6 feet.

  9. >>>It was also very PC (the new version) there was nobody smoking in the new version, compare that to the smoke filled bar in Bisbee where everyone lights up as soon as they walk in, lol <<<

Holy smokes, no smokes???? I find the efforts to be PC that are tortuously in conjunction with the self-righteous pursuit of "realism" in today's movies to be a source of endless amusement. They don't mind showing people blowing someone's insides but let them offer a guy a light for his cigarette and they call the police.
