It is hard to just live with what I've got!

It's interesting what you wrote about the break-up---I went through the same thing (and I'm an only daughter, too) although, unfortunately my parents were not quite so civil about the whole thing. I like to be as positive about the present as can be and I don't dwell on those things, but from time to time I wonder about how difficult it all must have been for my mother.
I'm glad the Coopers made it work after all. Our parents could not, but as you said, it was for the best I guess.
If actors couldn't bring real feelings to their performances, they wouldn't have the impact that they do, so it is relevant, what we've been discussing.
Keep all this in mind when you do see TEN NORTH FREDERICK. And keep the hankies nearby.

Nope, I have only the VHS and am very grateful to you for that link. I will take advantage of the offer!

The PCs at my office seem to block everything fun so I'm sure I'll be able to access it from home.
And I will certainly let you know about the cd once it arrives. Hopefully that will be this week. I agree about the importance of soundtracks. Some movies I like MAINLY because of the music include Hard Contract (1969--music by Alex North) and Rider on the Rain (1969---music by Francis Lai) and Love Story (1970---music also by Lai)

Thanks for the info; so you need an HD dvd player to even play them.
I don't know when I'll get around to an I-pod. I may be getting a really nice little cell phone soon that has a built-in mp3 player and fm radio and lots of memory. I may use that instead. Even if I ever get a different phone, I could still use it for the music. But that's less important to me right now than the video stuff.
And none of this is as important for me as learning to be grateful for what I already have and stop thinking I "need" new gadgets!!!

Hi John,
The cd I ordered (from Ebay) is an import (used), I believe. It also has the music from "Night Games" on it. I'm not sure what the quality will be, but there was a complete track listing so it seems to be the entire score.
I couldn't get the link you posted to work---but I'll try it again on my home laptop.

Just to show how "low tech" I really am---I only have the vaguest idea what Blu-Ray is; I assume it's some kind of high-definition format? Is it a dvd disc?

Wow. I can easily see that happening to me. I'm already half-way there and I consider myself "low tech".

It does sound like a good idea. Time will tell!
-
Exactly. Me---I'm too impatient to wait!!

P.S. Do you think we will ever go to a format that is region-free? What if everything is just "downloaded" one day, from the web? Making dvds, et al obsolete? Just like I-pods. I sometimes feel like a dinosaur because I still buy cds!

Thanks, Cinemascope----I think that is exactly what I will have to do. One thing is certain: I'm going to have plenty of cords and wires to tangle with!!
Miss G

Hi Cinemascope---I won't let it deter me from getting my all-region "fix", that's for sure. Hopefully, I won't notice the difference but I'm kind of picky about those things. I have even remarked similar sound problems in other old movies broadcast on TV and it drove me crazy.
But, like you say, we can't have it all!

Cheers,
Miss G

I think I too would be very annoyed if the voices were off-pitch---especially if they sounded higher than normal.

You do have a point. *sigh* I may have no other choice than to buy each separately. I just don't know if my TV has enough 'input' jacks for all this equipment....and don't tell me I will have to get a new TV!!

That's excellent news!! Thanks, Edgecliff!

Now I really must watch THE FIGHTING CARAVANS again because I don't remember any of those scenes. And after everything I've been reading about her in Errol Flynn's autobiography, it will be interesting to watch Lili Damita in "a new light". They had an awful marriage---truly tumultuous.
Have fun at "spring training"---bet you will to see all those good looking baseball players and in the warm weather, too!

Hi John!
I believe you are the first person I've come across who has seen, let alone admired, this movie. It's one of my all-time favorites and I watch my vhs copy quite often.
I agree it is in dire need of proper Region 1 dvd release. Maybe if Julie Andrews or Blake Edwards get a "box set" treatment it could be included?
I am actually getting an all-region dvd player/recorder soon, so thanks for the warning about the R2 dvd issues----I might otherwise have concluded the problems were with my machine!

HI Pktrekgirl!
Since my last post I actually did find an "Import" cd soundtrack of The Tamarind Seed and hope to receieve it in the mail soon. It's really an equisite score and the "Play It Again" song is memorable. I hope you can see the movie one day.
Have you ever seen on of Sharif's more recent movies, M. Ibrahim et les fleurs de Coran? Yes, it's a french movie, but it was a lovely and sweet story. Here is the Imdb.com link with more info:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0329388/
But yes, Doctor Z. is the pinnacle of Sharif's career.

I love Maria's book. It's one of the treasures of my collection. I would like to get her to autograph it one day. I don't collect autographs, but it's always nice to have the author sign their book. And since I had Frank's dauther, Nancy, sign her book on her father, I thought it would be nice to have Maria do the same. I also have a book on Yul Brynner by his daughter......
I have FIGHTING CARAVANS in that dvd collection but I honestly don't remember much about it (except that it wasn't in the greatest shape).
I wish TCM would show DESIRE---for any of you who have yet to see this second teaming of Coop with La Dietrich, you are in for a treat. It's as Lubitsch as you can get, without Lubitsch actually directing. And Gary looks like perfection, of course.

I haven't seen SON OF FURY in so long----it was one of my favorite Power films, though, and I'm so looking forward to its release onto dvd.

I agree with all you other choices, too. Garbo's romanticism was timeless and almost poetry.
Great taste!

I am also looking for Assault on a Queen. I heard that a Sinatra box set was due this year so, hopefully, it may be included.

I would love to have seen it on the big screen at the recent MoMA retrospective, but I have a nice dvd and watch it regularly. The Cote d'Azur is practically my favorite place in the world, which is one of the things that really drew me to the movie.
I like the way the present was shown in black and white (sad, bleak) and the past in color (more innocent). Many directors do the opposite.

I think his movies are wonderful jewels. Shanghai Express, Morocco and The Shanghai Gesture are my favorites. I have never seen The Scarlet Empress or Dishonored, unfortunately. But those first two with Dietrich I can watch over and over. I love how "movie-movie" they are, if you know what I mean. This is pure cinema---fantasy, exoticism and grandiloquent gestures.
My kind of movies.

Yes, I've looked at that but since I need to get a dvd recorder---I already have a region 1 player---I was thinking I would try to find an all-region dvd-recorder and kill two birds with one stone, Otherwise, I may end up with three dvd players, which would be too much!
-
Thanks anyway, Dan. Yes, the options on players are wide-spread, but not too many manufacturers make all-region recorders.

You mentioned your plans for your tax refund check (and what better investment, than in Gary Cooper??? Hee!)
I wish I could let loose and buy all the GC dvds I lack, but I have travel plans to South America and maybe later to Greece (that one may have to wait until next year, though, God willing). I love travel more than anything so I have to force myself to save whenever I can. It's not easy, because I also love to shop!
However, I am going to get a few of those May offerings, and next month I will probably get the all-region dvd player and order Man of the West and Garden of Evil, if I can.
