  1. It's been too long since I've seen CLOAK AND DAGGER, that I remember nothing about it, except that Lilli Palmer is his co-star. She is a brilliant actress so they must have been terrific together. I think I'll rent it on Netflix and then I will eventually buy the dvd.

In the meantime, I am going to look up when TCM is next airing MAN OF THE WEST so that I can be sure to record it.

  2. CoopfanDan and Coopsgirl:

I finally trudged thru the snow to the Post Office today and what happiness! I want to thank you both for taking the trouble to send those dvds----I'm in debt to you both and can't wait until I have a dvd recorder and can begin to return the favor.

Great pix, Coopsgirl! Isn't Corbis a terrific site? So if you save the picture to your photobucket, the "Corbis" watermark doesn't show? That's good to know because I've tried posting them before but had that issue.

NewClassicFilmFan: At over 600 posts, Gary Cooper is an obvious favorite here. Hope you find many favorites of your own in the classic film cannon.

  3. My favorites are:

    James Mason in NxNW

Ray Milland in Dial "M" for Murder

    Herbert Marshall in Foreign Correspondent

    Judith Andersen in Rebecca

Leopoldine Constantin in Notorious (to me, Raines wasn't really a "villain")

Raymond Burr in Rear Window (when I was little and saw this film, he scared the heck out of me when he came at Jimmy!)

  4. I think he was an excellent director. I don't think there is a tremendous amount of human warmth or humor in his films, which may be what turns some people off, sub-consciously. However, I enjoy them for what they are and really have begun admiring the way he uses the camera.

    My favorites:

    Laura

    Bonjour, Tristesse

    Where the Sidewalk Ends

    Anatomy of a Murder

Daisy Kenyon (I agree with the other poster about it)

Whirlpool (underrated film with a marvelous performance by Jose Ferrer)

Bunny Lake is Missing (Olivier is marvelously understated in it)

    Fallen Angel

Angel Face (I find this one of the bleakest of all his films, so I don't watch it too frequently)

  5. I wish I had the Encore channels. I have TimeWarner in New York and unfortunately, it would be a big bump in my cable bill to add it. One day, though, I hope to do so. I'm pea green about all the good shows and movies you guys have been watching. I don't mind Pan-N-Scan if there's no other option.

  6. Hi Cinemalover!

I find the showdown in the abandoned town at the end to be perhaps the most bleak in Mann's films (I haven't see The Furies so I can't say for sure). In fact, I think this is definitely the most violent (in terms of the staging of the violence, at any rate) of all of Cooper's---unless The Hanging Tree is more so (haven't seen that one either). Though he comes out with his hard won honor still intact, the ending does not feel at all "happy".

I want to add I was extremely impressed with DEVIL'S DOORWAY---must be one of Robert Taylor's finest screen performances and it seemed very ahead-of-its-time in the point-of-view.

Can anyone tell me if there is a good biography out there on ANTHONY MANN? I know less than zero about his life.

  7. Since NO ONE has named Gary Cooper---I have to step in and rectify matters, pardners! He is the GENUINE "Man of The West" for always.

After Coop, I enjoy seeing John Wayne, Robert Mithcum, Clark Gable, Greg Peck, James Stewart, Joel McRae, Glenn Ford and Randolph Scott westerns.

I've always wished I could see the early Harey Carey westerns done with John Ford.

Supporting actors I enjoy in westerns: Walter Brennan, Arthur Hunnicut, Burl Ives, Chill Wills, Andy Devine, Victor McLaglen, Harry Carey, Jr., Paul Fix, Gabby Hayes, Charles Winninger.

  8. Thank you, dear Mongo, for that spotlight you wrote on one of my tippy-top favorites of them all: ROBERT RYAN. I can't get enough of the guy, whether he plays mean or plays sweet. ON DANGEROUS GROUND is one heck of a film and one of the grandest screen performances ever.

I also think he was terribly attractive with that irrisistible combination of rugged looks and intelligence.

  9. > Here is some interesting info I came across regarding

    > extras for the upcoming TYRONE POWER SWASHBUCKLER box

    > set to be released in May by FOX. 1) "Leading

    > Ladies" (interviews with Jayne Meadows, Colleen Gray,

    > Patricia Neal and Terry Moore), 2) a biography but a

    > new one, not the A&E telecast, 3) "Behind the Scenes"

    > which will include James Cromwell, and 4) one feature

    That's excellent news!!

Do you mean a separate box set, of non-swashie films?

  10. Hi CoopsfanDan:

I would caution you to withhold judgement until you've had a chance to be exposed to more movies (such as those listed by the other poster) by Hedy, Lana, and even Greer, though they might not appeal to a man (except visually) as much as to women due their being cast in largely romantic pictures. Hedy and Lana are unquestionably Hollywood mega-stars, Hedy being arguably one of the most beautiful women ever to grace tinseltown and Lana was an enormously popular glamour queen at the most competitve studio: MGM. The movies in the lists are really all fabulous films with different styles and genres, which you could be enriched by giving them a chance. (Jane Powell is the only one you mention who specialized in musicals---Hedy and Lana rarely appeared in them).

Unfortunately, Fay Wray's career was limited to rather pedestrian roles except for Kong, and I can see how many might feel it takes more than only one super big role to justify icon status. (Not that it wouldn't be nice to have some of her films on dvd).

As I said, you have a lot of wonderful stars yet to discover if you're a newbie to classics---there are literally dozens of splendid actors and actresses to observe in the classic movie "catalogue". Many of them I was "cold" on at first (like Coop) but over time I've come to "rediscover" them and, what a joy! And others, like Robert Taylor for instance, showed a marked development into deeper, darker territory over the course of their careers. He started out as a "pretty boy" matinee idol and grew into an accomplished actor who could tackle gritty, compromised and complex characters at odds with his public image.

I agree Bergman and Stanwyck BADLY need box-sets. Hopefully the new Warners/TCM alliance will produce some.

P.S. I wonder why English would hate Cooper, he's practically one of their "own".

    Cheers,

    Miss G

  11. that scene in Deeds is priceless. I cannot believe they made that stinky "remake".

I think he's stunning looking but I can appreciate people have different tastes in what they find attractive. But to say he couldn't act was nonsensical. No worries, he was very sweet about it (the original poster) because he's simply mad about his favorites (Lilli Palmer for one) and knows what it's like to have the shoe on the other foot. ;o)

I think when those two documentaries come out, and hopefull air here on TCM, a lot of people will be very surprised at what they learn about Coop.

  12. Anything putting Gary Cooper together with mobsters is worth a look. ;)

I occasionally post in another forum and there was one person who said he didn't think Gary Cooper could act at all----you should seen my feathers ruffle. :) I know many think because of his quiet style it means he isn't "doing anything" but that may be because they are used to looking at "big" acting and emoting.

  13. I watched about half of Dr. Wassell before falling asleep, but happily I have it in my collection. It's a good one and like I've said before, Gary is an excellent choice to play a compassionate doctor. He is also excellent at showing us how a man in that position relates to all these patients with differeing needs and personalities. Quite a demanding role!

I am aware of it, thanks, Cinemascope. Unfortunately, I have yet to get an "all region" dvd player. I'm saving my pennies, though! It will be worth it.
