Kyle, my man, that's what I'm talking about!!! Great poster, greater film! And thanks to Jeff Stafford!!
-
Absolutely grooving to this flick tonight!!! In prime time!!!
-
Kaleman, I really enjoyed this flick! I happened to wake up in the middle of the night Saturday, so I saw most of HELL'S HIGHWAY (another very good flick!) and then all of this one. I really like Douglas Kennedy, and Marjorie Lord? Yowza!!!
Good stuff! I dig B films though! And agree, I'd love to see more! Wee hours of morning are fine, anytime is great!
-
Don't miss it! On in 90 minutes!!! Awesome groove!!!
-
Thank you, Miss Wonderly!! I hope you groove to all the cool films coming up this week and throughout the month!!
-
Kyle, my man, cool info re: Jeff Stafford, the TCM employee who selected SAFE IN HELL for airing tonight. Man, don't miss it!
"Wicked sense of humor"? I guess so, you could look at it that way, certainly in segments of the film! It's also somewhat tragic, without giving away too much of the film. Somewhat lyrical and mystical as well, to an extent, a great film on many, many levels! And pre-code to the hilt!! Kudos to this gentleman for selecting this film, it totally rocks!!

That promo is smokin' hot! Saw it earlier this weekend, and wow! Groove!

> Too bad TCM didn't take the opportunity to include the silent short "Double Whoopee," featuring Ms. Harlow with Laurel and Hardy, in their retrospective. It's an early example of how well she did comedy; she also looks stunning. It's one of L&H's better silent shorts, but TCM omitted it from their recent L&H shorts marathon as well.
Wow, that's sounds very cool!!! Would love to see it! Hopefully TCM will find it and be able to air it sometime in the near future!

I agree, I woke up in the middle of the night and it was on and I was delighted!!!

Love, thanks for the compliments, and glad to hear that you're totally grooving on pre-codes these days!! I trust that you will, more often than not, not be disappointed! And with most coming up next week, I'm sure of it!
I would especially recommend SAFE IN HELL, as some other good folk have mentioned in this thread, it's quite a film!
But there are many other great flix in the lineup as well! Enjoy and groove!

Wow, what an out of sight week on TCM coming up the week of Mar 7th!!!
Monday evening, wow, one of my favorite all time pre-code flix, SAFE IN HELL, with the saucy dame Dorothy Mackaill! William Wellman directed, natch! Very intense ending! I realize this is part of the TCM employees guest programmer promotion, I'd like to meet the employee who recommended this one!! Totally groove!!
Tuesday, as part of a Claire Trevor tribute, in the afternoon we are treated with some very cool noir flix: BORDERLINE, a rare treat with Freddie Mac and Claire! And CRACK UP with Claire and Pat O'Brien! Both are great! There are also some groovy B's in the lineup, including VALLEY OF THE GIANTS from 1938, with Wayne Morris and Frank McHugh!
And wow, Tuesday night, the first evening of the SOTM tribute to the sexy and gorgeous and talented Jean Harlow, Goddess of the 30's Silver Screen!!! Some pre-code masterpieces including RED-HEADED WOMAN (one of my all time faves, sooooo scandalous!!!), and THREE WISE GIRLS, which I've never seen before!!! This one also stars Mae Clarke and Marie Prevost---va va va voom!!! Also digging on the sentimental, but very groovy, RIFF-RAFF, with Spencer Tracy!
For rare Bogie films, you can't do much better than the 1932 LOVE AFFAIR, a pre-code also with my gal, Dorothy MacKaill, airs early morning Wednesday!
Wednesday night must be "Secretary Night", with films featuring 'em, and I'm looking forward to some 30's gems such as MORE THAN A SECRETARY with Jean Arthur from 1936! SHE'S GOT EVERYTHING from 1938 with Ann Sothern!, and another somewhat rare Bogie flick, MEN ARE SUCH FOOLS (1938) with Wayne Morris and Priscilla Lane! Very groovy!
Lots and lots to groove to on Thursday daytime, with the tribute to director Gregory LaCava!!! Wow! With tons of pre-codes!!! Kicking it off with LAUGH AND GET RICH from 1931, with Hugh Herbert, Edna May Oliver and Dorothy Lee! You just know that's gonna be a hoot!! SMART WOMAN (1931) with a very young Mary Astor and Edward Everett Horton!! So many very cool pre-codes! AGE OF CONSENT (1932), SYMPHONY OF SIX MILLION (1932) with my man Ricardo Cortez, BED OF ROSES (1933) with the luscious Constance Bennett and everyone's favorite Joel McRea!! THE HALF-NAKED TRUTH (1933), a zany pre-code with my man Lee Tracy, the saucy Lupe Velez, and Eugene Pallette!!! Also looking forward to a mid-30's flick I've not seen, starring Claudette Colbert: SHE MARRIED HER BOSS from 1935! WOW, Thursday is out of control!!!
And TCM is not going to allow us to recover from this hard groove either!!! Cos Friday morning we rev right up with a rare pre-code, TEN CENTS A DANCE (1931), with Babs Stanwyck and Ricardo Cortez!! You just know it has to be smoking hot, I've not seen it before and can't wait!! Followed by another Babs Stanwyck pre-code, SHOPWORN from 1932!! That's it for the pre-codes but there are more relatively rare 30's films on tap for the day, including AND SO THEY WERE MARRIED, GOOD GIRLS GO TO PARIS, START CHEERING and one from 1941, SWEETHEART OF THE CAMPUS!!! Very groovy!!
The weekend is filled with groovy flix as well! Kicking it off with the weekly Bowery Boys entry on Saturday morning, HOT SHOTS from 1956! And Saturday night is a tribute to director Rouben Mamoulian, which includes lots of pre-code era films, including CITY STREETS and LOVE ME TONIGHT and QUEEN CHRISTINA!!! Also grooving to 30's flicks such as WE LIVE AGAIN and THE GAY DESPERADO included in the tribute!!
Sunday rocks out as well! Early morning we're treated to the 1933 GOING HOLLYWOOD, later on SHANGHAI EXPRESS, an awesome pre-code with Marlene Dietrich and a great supporting cast! For mystery fans, AFTER THE THIN MAN shows up! Followed by TO BE OR NOT TO BE, a very funny WWII era Jack Benny/Carole Lombard matchup!
Joan of Arc is being featured on Sunday evening and the Silent Sunday Night will feature one of the most intense films I've ever seen, directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer, natch, THE PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC, very powerful film!!!
Thanks TCM for all these groovy flix!!!

DOA just totally rocks! I never get tired of it. Great stuff on an early Sat morning!
-
MusicalNovelty,
Yes, that's very disappointing! I hope they can get that one back on the schedule sometime soon as well!
But....March is still a really GREAT month! Looking forward to digging on it, starting today with Garfield!
-
I was so sorry to hear of Jane Russell's passing. Loved her in films, especially with Mitch.

NYGuy, I like that one also! Very funny and charming!
-
Harlowrocks, great points. I want all you want, PLUS the trimmings!

-
I admittedly like them less than I used to, though I can occasionally still get sucked in. After I discovered the tight way that a saucy, rollicking pre-code, or a gritty B-noir, can entertain without scruples for 60 min more or less, I'm much more a fan of shorter films.
I still am a sucker for THE TEN COMMANDMENTS (1956) and GANDHI (1982), and SAMSON AND DELILAH (1949), but overall I don't dig them like I used to.
-
Thanks to Amazon extension of credit, which I'll be paying off forever, but a happy man until then--I purchased the remaining sets--THE MUMMY, THE INVISIBLE MAN, THE WOLF MAN and THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON. All are GREAT, actually pretty darn good prices for all the films and features you get! Really grooving!

LZ: Great news!!!
Yvesmary, I agree, that would be rockin'!

That could be it. It's too bad they couldn't wrangle another showing of HELL'S ANGELS for this monumental event, but I was blessed to see it when they did have it, and it was a cool flick!
And overall this month's tribute really rocks with at least one flick I've not seen before! Really looking forward to it!
-
I'm glad they came out with this set, but it's too bad they didn't feel it possible to come out with a true big mult-DVD set with extras and all the trimmings. I feel Harlow is a big enough star to warrant that, but I guess the major studios are shying away from those these days. That's unfortunate, because it would have been a truly great tribute and I believe it would have sold well.

Watching one of my all time faves, THEY MADE ME A CRIMINAL, this morning on TCM! Great way to start the day, thanks TCM!
I only discovered that this was a remake of a pre-code film many years after I first saw this film. THE LIFE OF JIMMY DOLAN is a great flick also, but this one always has a special place in my heart, having seen it first.
-
A quick search of the site didn't reveal it on the schedule for the next few months, but hopefully it will show up again soon so you can see it! It's a great pre-code flick!!
It's also on the TCM Archives Forbidden Hollywood DVD collection, Vol 2.
Hope you have a chance to see it soon!

Great TCM night: Jean Harlow! Not required, but highly recommended
