I'm in agreement with the groove over ANIMAL CRACKERS!!! Though I was out of touch with TCM over the past couple weeks, I have this one saved to the DVR to enjoy when I have some free time! One of my all time faves!! I also wish they had aired THE COCOANUTS, but maybe another time?
-
Kinokima, thank you so much for your thoughts on SHANGHAI EXPRESS!!! Enjoyed reading them! Agree with you completely about Anna May Wong!

I already have a copy of it on DVD, but I want another one in case I scratch the old one. > > What a night! Old movies all day and night! Yay! Fred, it was an awesome night and day today too! Glad you to hear you were grooving!!

I'm late with this greeting as I was out of touch for over a week (internet and TCM access-no!). I wanted to wish all my fellow TCM groovers a very happy new year in 2011! Groove to the films, enjoy and have a very safe, healthy and happy year!

If you dig early 30's films, March on TCM is for you!!! I'm there!

Kinokima, I'm right there with you watching SHANGHAI EXPRESS!!! One of my favorite pre-code flix of all time! Please share what you think sometime after? Much appreciated! As for THIS IS THE NIGHT, I've never seen it, and am SO looking forward to it! This is one of the greatest features of TCM and the community of shared experience, something I miss a lot with timeshifting. Great to know that there are others out there not only watching what I am, but grooving to it, sharing ideas about it, and digging it together!

TCM totally rocks out!!! I just got back and wow!!! First off is tonight's Josef Von Sternberg's night, and wow! SHANGHAI EXPRESS, phenomenal pre-code! MOROCCO, awesome, CRIME AND PUNISHMENT, never saw before but one of my favorite novels!!! And wow, the very B THE SHANGHAI GESTURE--what a hoot!! MACAO, one of my favorite Mitch/Russell flix!!! And a flick I've not seen before, THE KING STEPS OUT!!! WOW, what a way to kick off a week, and the new year!!! Tuesday daytime finds us with a cool B flick starring one of the greatest comedic character actors, Frank McHugh, in HE COULDN'T SAY NO!! Then Kay Kyser in MY FAVORITE SPY, always a cool groove! Tuesday night and through the day on Wed is the first of the Hal Roach features every week this month, and this week it's "The Little Rascals"! I have to say that surprisingly I'm not a huge fan of this series, but I will definitely be checking it out and see if I find them more entertaining than I have in the past! No matter what, it's totally far freaking out that TCM airs these!! Loretta Young's day on Thursday rocks with the very underrated gem, THE UNGUARDED HOUR, a film I've not seen before A NIGHT TO REMEMBER, the noir CAUSE FOR ALARM. Rock! And wow, Saturday, out of control!!! Morning features THE GLASS KEY, great noir with Ladd and Veronica Lake! Followed by this week's Bowery Boys feature, SPY CHASERS!! Then from one of my favorite series, ANOTHER THIN MAN!! And one of the greatest of the big bug sci-fi flix from the 50's, THEM! Wow! And OMG, Sunday evening!!!! Pre-code heaven with two VERY obscure gems! First off at 8pm is Thelma Todd and Cary Grant in THIS IS THE NIGHT!!! Followed by my main man Warren William in THE MATCH KING with the luscious Lili Damita!!! Hotcha with Lili and Thelma!!! And wrap that up with FRIENDS AND LOVERS, from 1931! Pre-code rock and roll! Very groovy, TCM!!! Thank you for the great films!

I really dug watching this early Wayne oater from the tail end of Wayne's tribute day the other day on TCM! It was a fun hoot! Folks dig any of his other pre-STAGECOACH work?
-
I really dug watching the early Duke film: THE MAN FROM MONTEREY! Cool to see The Duke before he became a star in these oaters! Luis Alberni was a hoot!
-
I just totally dug watching TENTH AVENUE ANGEL!!! Yeah, it tore me up! I love movies like that! I hope everyone on the board has a very happy holiday season and a happy new year! I'll be away for a while until after the new year and hope all enjoy a happy, safe and festive new year! Enjoy the films, groove to Will Rogers and the Marx Bros (as I will when I get back!) or whatever you groove to!
-
Upon reading the header, I thought it was a reference to TCM!!! I wish! If only I could earn a living from watching this channel! But even without that, every day is indeed a holiday with TCM! I would totally groove to see this film though, hope we can!!!

> {quote:title=MyFavoriteFilms wrote:}{quote} > I wish TCM would air some of Duke's police procedurals. I created a thread about that sub-genre on this forum. New fans might gain more appreciation if they were to see him in other films besides westerns, even though these horse operas were his bread-and-butter. I think they have occasionally done so, but rarely. But yes, definitely his westerns are his bread and butter, IMO!!! Great stuff! Iconic!

Thank God for these movies, and thank God for TCM.

Stop with the Mickey Rooney shows enought already

I dig The Mick! However, today not one of the best days during his month, for me anyway. Unfortunate since I'm off today and it's snowing outside, perfect day for a long sit in with TCM. It's cool though, I can dig on some of the DVD's in my relatively meager collection and pick up on TCM when I'm back after the holidays! Great that it's here! -
I dunno...I just relax and enjoy the fantasy that is on the screen. Do we expect Edward G. Robinson and Bogie to be actual gangsters off-screen? Films, for me, are about fantasy and larger-than-life characters. Bigger than life, and I enjoy that part of it. It was a fun day. I loved watching TRUE GRIT, hadn't seen it in a while, and wow, powerful story! I dunno...The Duke IS that character, tough to imagine anyone else filling those shoes. What I can appreciate is that even if we don't dig who and what someone is off-screen, I can lose myself in the image that is generated by the film itself and by star power. It was compelling then and remains so for me now!
-
Thanks for the all the great info in this thread!!! I totally dig Robert Osborne, and hope he continues on and on for a long time!!!
-
First, hope everyone has a very happy holiday! I will be mostly out of touch for the next week or so, and will be far from TCM viewing, so will have to catch the following on the trusty DVR after the New Year: Will Rogers night on Tuesday!!! Gotta groove to these early 30's films, can't wait to check them out, most of them I've never seen before!!! And of course the Marx Bros on NY Eve!! What a way to spend it! 4 of the Paramount's and 3 of the MGM's (including the 2 best)! Thank you, TCM!!! Awesome holiday gifts to groove to!

Not terribly interested in the Mick films airing today unfortunately but have the day off so catching up on some of the DVD packs I've obtained recently. I thought I'd crack open one of the PD film packs I haven't yet, called "Mobster Movie Pack" from Platinum Disc Corp. Some gems on here, watched a WB film that must have fallen into PD, LADY GANGSTER, which is a remake, of sorts, of LADIES THEY TALK ABOUT, not anywhere close to on par with it, but a pretty decent B programmer from the 40's nevertheless. Watched a few of the other flicks so far, most pretty cool, but definitely B programming at it's zenith! However, really dug this one, ESCAPE BY NIGHT from 1937 and Republic Pictures. Heartwarming gangster/crime story, and recommended if you get a chance to catch it! BTW, this pack is available on Amazon for about 15 bucks, for 20 flicks that's not a bad deal! Quality is about what you'd expect for PD films, though generally most of them are pretty decent.

Good stuff! Really enjoyed it! I've seen the 36 version and liked that one too, perhaps better overall, though Wayne's presence on screen is always welcome viewing!

Kyle In Hollywood's CENSORED Poster Gallery
markbeckuaf replied to hlywdkjk's topic in Remembering Kyle in Hollywood
Absolutely love this film! 1929 don'tcha know!!! Thank you for the cool poster, Kyle! -
I'm checking out THREE GODFATHERS now, as they let us out of work early (slightly time shifted though). Very cool! I also want to check out a few other films later on in the lineup!

This is a pretty cool idea! I'm a HUGE fan of commentary tracks on the classic films I purchase (and wish they would do more actually!!). And I've often thought I'd love to hear more from RO and others on the films! They have so little time at the beginning and end, that I'd love to hear them go on about it more! So yeah, maybe once per week or something, it would be cool if they'd just run on about it in a special airing of a classic film! Love it!

A RARE REPUBLIC SERIAL , NEWLY RESTORED IS COMING.
markbeckuaf replied to cody1949's topic in General Discussions
Oh wow, cool! That's awesome news! It would be groovy if TCM would air more serials, perhaps on Saturday mornings to go along with the B series films they have been showing.
