It's a perennial watch for me and I can even tolerate the ads, but AMC is horrid. Thank goodness, they weren't the only station that had rights to it, WGN has them too! I watched it last Saturday night and grooved, even with the ads. They had a nice retro interstitial before and after the ad break too, which I dug. Cool that TCM will be able to air early next year. Maybe that will lead to being able to show it for the holiday season next year. Fox has been pretty amenable to TCM of late, so we'll see!

Wow, that's a very groovy list! I will have to check that out!!

Wow. Now that I've calmed down from totally rocking over the initial viewing of the schedule, there is just so many sick films in March, and it seems to be overflowing with 1930's films! Here is just some of what I'm totally grooving to: Tuesday nights, excluding the first one, will be dedicated to Jean Harlow, SOTM! Tons of pre-codes and 30's as she sadly passed away before the end of the decade. But thankfully her films are well preserved, and will provide treats to fans all month long! Saturday mornings will still give us more Bowery Boys flix!!! Groove hard! Before we're released from the clutches of "31 Days of Oscar" they leave us with the 1929 THE BROADWAY MELODY late on Mar 3! Groovy! Mar 4 brings us a day of John Garfield films, and I'm a huge fan! Included are such gems as THEY MADE ME A CRIMINAL, NOBODY LIVES FOREVER, THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE!! Later that night, a pre-code gem, THE RICHEST GIRL IN THE WORLD (1934) shows up! Mar 5, Saturday, brings us DOA, OUR RELATIONS (a Laurel and Hardy twist), and later in the evening, I AM A FUGITIVE FROM A CHAIN GANG, HELL'S HIGHWAY (1932) with Richard Dix, and a 50's B CHAIN GANG (1950)!!! Sunday, Mar 6 brings us another pre-code CAVALCADE (1933) and one of my favorite films, HERE COMES MR. JORDAN in the morning and Silent Sunday is the awesome 1920 Barrymore DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE!!! Monday, Mar 7, in prime time is the rocking pre-code SAFE IN HELL (1933), one of my all time faves!! Claire Trevor is featured during the day on Mar 8, including a B flick VALLEY OF THE GIANTS (1938), and a couple noir/crime flix: CRACK-UP and BORDERLINE (with Freddie Mac). I'm not even going to mention all of the Harlow films during the month, they ALL totally rock, but Mar 8 features a flick I've never seen, a 1932 pre-code THREE WISE GIRLS, with Marie Prevost! I can't wait to check that one out! Mar 9 prime time features secretary's on the prowl, and a ton of 1930's films are included! Thurs, Mar 10 features a Gregory LaCava tribute, and wow! TONS of pre-codes including LAUGH AND GET RICH (1931), SMART WOMAN (1931), THE AGE OF CONSENT (1932), SYMPHONY OF SIX MILLION (1932), BED OF ROSES (1933), THE HALF-NAKED TRUTH (1933)--with Lee Tracy! Friday, Mar 11 features TEN CENTS A DANCE and SHOPWORN, both awesome pre-code flix!! Lots more films from the 30's throughout the day! More pre-codes and 30's films on Sat, Mar 12! Wow, we're not even half-way through the month and it's out of control! The morning of Mar 13 (Sunday) features GOING HOLLYWOOD (1933), SHANGHAI EXPRESS (1932) and AFTER THE THIN MAN (1936)!! And later that day, the Silent Sunday feature is the incredible THE PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC, the 1928 masterpiece directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer!!! Monday, Mar 14 features a block of films starring George Brent, with more pre-codes, natch!!! Such gems as THE RICH ARE ALWAYS WITH US (1932), THEY CALL IT SIN (1932), FROM HEADQUARTERS (1933), THE PAINTED VEIL (1934) and 30's films including STAMBOUL QUEST (1934) and THE RIGHT TO LIVE (1935) the latter a flick I've never seen before! The wee hours of Wed, Mar 15 features a pre-code gem I've not seen before, starring John Barrymore, REUNION IN VIENNA!! SUNNY SIDE UP (1929) Mar 16 FEMALE (1933) Mar 17 prime time! It's outta control I tell ya! Is this 1994?? It doesn't end! On Friday, Mar 18, Edward Everett Horton is featured and wow, more pre-codes and 30's flix including ROAR OF THE DRAGON (1932), LONELY WIVES (1932), KISS ME AGAIN (1931), SING AND LIKE IT (1934), SMARTY (1934)!! Lots more!! Sunday evening, Mar 20 features some George Murphy films rarely seen, such as THE PUBLIC MENACE (1935) and THE WOMEN MEN MARRY (1937)!! For proto noir fans, 1937's THE GAVE HIM A GUN airs on Monday, Mar 21!! And for fans of noir in it's heyday, check out CAUGHT from 1949 later on in prime time! Wed, Mar 23 features a lot of noir and crime all day and into the evening with EXPERIMENT IN TERROR, SHOCK CORRIDOR, THEY LIVE BY NIGHT, GUN CRAZY, and in the evening, LITTLE MISS MARKER and A SLIGHT CASE OF MURDER inject some humor into the gangster milieu! Thurs, Mar 24 sees more pre-codes and 30's films! 20, 000 YEARS IN SING SING leads it off, THE CAT AND THE FIDDLE, and tons more throughout the day!! And just when you thought things were kind of chilling down, TCM comes storming back on Mar 29th with a daytime tribute to Warner Baxter, which includes SEVEN--count 'em--7 "Crime Doctor" films!!! Outtasight!! Rock and roll!!! I think the only ones missing are the ones without "Crime Doctor" in the title--3 of them. Hopefully they'll show up sometime soon, but I can dig this hard! There's a lot more I missed, but wow....I want to take off work all month long!!! It's a trip! TCM is sick! Thanks for one of the BEST monthly schedules EVER!
-
Valentine, I'm with you! I dig marathons actually! One of my favorite months of all time was about 2 years ago when TCM aired marathon blocks of series films every weekday during the month!!!! It rocked! As for sequence, my main man Kyle is right, and the Hardy films were kind of unique in that they aired them backwards. They rarely do that, and usually run them the other way around when running series films, but occasionally there are gaps in the run, as he mentioned. Sometimes I think that is due to programming time as well.

They will be airing 4 of the 5 Paramounts (only COCOANUTS will not be showing up, unfortunately). Along with the 2 best MGM flix, and another that is hilarious! I also won't be home, but wow, will be checking them out as soon as I can! Marx Bros rock!

OMG, I don't know what to say! The more I look at March the more I trip out!!! I'm totally, totally grooving!!! Pre-codes all over the place and not the usual suspects, either!!! And OMG, Kyle, my man, you are right, the 29th is a Warner Baxter day and WOW!!!! Crime Doctor marathon, I can't wait!!!! This is an out of control month here! TCM you are the bomb diggy!!!
-
WOWWWWW!!!!!! OMG, pre-code lovers are going to be in heaven!!!! Like me!!! OMG!!! Where do I begin??? And tons of noir's too!
-
I dig the marathons when they are flix I dig, like when they ran marathons of The Saint a few weeks ago, or the upcoming marathon of The Marx Bros on NY Eve! When I don't dig the flix, it's cool, it will be over soon and then something will come on that I dig. And can always watch some of my Chan DVD's! TCM does an awesome job. No other station on cable like it.

A Christmas Carol 1938 versus 1951
markbeckuaf replied to FloydDBarber's topic in General Discussions
In all fairness, I've never seen the 51 version, but for me it's the 38 version all the way!!! I know it's MGM and it's hokey in a way, but that's what Christmas is all about in a way---heartwarming and feel good and it always makes me cry, smile and feel good in the end, and that's the bottom line for me! It's one of my 3 favorite seasonal films, along with MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET and IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE!! -
I know, wow, that's an AWESOME looking set!!!

Sad passing of The Independent Film Channel

Kinokima, I feel your pain! I didn't have AMC during it's heyday, it was only added to our lineup when it was changing...not terrible yet, they aired ads only in between the films, but it was on the downward spiral that eventually led to what is there now. I agree, I feel blessed that we have TCM! -

I'm with you MFF on last night's flix. COLLEGE was so much funnier to me, and I found I couldn't really get into RINGS THE BELL, to be honest. Like you, I couldn't connect with it or something, but wow, COLLEGE had me rolling quite a bit! I know one of those is that I'm a fan of "fish out of water" comedy so that hit stride for me there big time, plus I just think the supporting cast and story was spot on. I've not seen SITTING PRETTY but am very interested in seeing it now! -
I absolutely loved watching THE SHOP AROUND THE CORNER yesterday!!! Perfect for a Sunday morning, and I also hadn't seen it in a while, so I was able to so easily re-capture that magical feeling I got from watching it the first time! I love it, and Jimmy is wonderful in it! As for comparisons with Jimmy and Coop...hmmm. I never really thought about it before, I do love Coop's Capra films, possibly as much or on par at least with Jimmy's. But as far as actors, though I do love Coop and love most of his films, I find Jimmy more satisfying on some level that is difficult to describe. To me, he's like an old friend in his best roles. I'm not a fan of his "counter-casting" roles to be honest (with Hitch mostly), but when he's doing his thing, I'm a total sucker for it!

Sad passing of The Independent Film Channel
markbeckuaf replied to ValentineXavier's topic in General Discussions
Oh no, this is sad news, but as you say not entirely unexpected. Does this pretty much leave TCM as the only non-premium cable movie channel out there? It's too bad, I was digging watching The Three Stooges shorts on IFC, as they had been presented in digital clarity and commercial free. Ah well, need to break down and get their sets. -

Wow, Shirley Temple is gorgeous!!!! This is pretty darn funny so far! -
Susuhigh, I agree, it was a great morning of films!!! Wonderful way to start the day! I hadn't watched THE SHOP AROUND THE CORNER in a while, and wow, I forgot how much I loved it until watching this morning!

Please TCM, More EARLY '30s films!!
markbeckuaf replied to WonderMoon's topic in General Discussions
Tracey, COMPLICATED WOMEN will be airing Jan 24 in the wee morning at 5:15AM! It follows an airing of BABY FACE!! Taking another glance at the Jan schedule shows quite a few early 30's flix throughout! Highlights are Kay Francis' birthday, plus one of the Friday evenings they are showing pre-code gangster films, but there are lots more too! -
Clifton Webb as Lynn Belvedere

I'm looking forward to these flix tonight! I have never seen any of the "Belvedere" films! I liked Webb in LAURA and THE DARK CORNER, both different types of films, so wonder how I'll dig him in this one. I'm wanting to find out! -

Kelly I'm with you! A month focusing on pre-codes would be awesome, kind of like the months we had focusing on comedy, and westerns, etc, in the past. Some of those had 3 featured nights per week plus showing more on weekends sometimes, that would rock!! Roberta that's a GREAT list, thank you! And Scottman, yep, the early 30's rock the house! Thank goodness that TCM does air them fairly frequently, but a spotlight or more would be sweet! -
I woke up to THERE GOES MY HEART (slept in a little this morning due to cold), and wow, I love this sweet little flick! Patsy Kelly is funny as heck, and I dig Virginia Bruce! And it's from 1938!! Up next is another heart-warming story, THE SHOP AROUND THE CORNER, one of my all time faves, and looking forward to it! Thanks for a WICKED morning, TCM!

Why does ?The Thing? go from 35mm to 16mm ??
markbeckuaf replied to FredCDobbs's topic in General Discussions
Interesting discussion. This is one of my all time favorite Sci-Fi flix and I appreciated a mid-day viewing yesterday! To me, this film rocks the house and I dig it no matter how many times I've seen it now! Thanks to TCM for airing it and commercial-free!
