  1. I just totally dug watching TENTH AVENUE ANGEL!!! Yeah, it tore me up! I love movies like that!

I hope everyone on the board has a very happy holiday season and a happy new year! I'll be away for a while until after the new year and hope all enjoy a happy, safe and festive new year!

Enjoy the films, groove to Will Rogers and the Marx Bros (as I will when I get back!) or whatever you groove to!

  2. Upon reading the header, I thought it was a reference to TCM!!! I wish! If only I could earn a living from watching this channel! :)

But even without that, every day is indeed a holiday with TCM!

I would totally groove to see this film though, hope we can!!!

    > I wish TCM would air some of Duke's police procedurals. I created a thread about that sub-genre on this forum. New fans might gain more appreciation if they were to see him in other films besides westerns, even though these horse operas were his bread-and-butter.

I think they have occasionally done so, but rarely. But yes, definitely his westerns are his bread and butter, IMO!!! Great stuff! Iconic!

  4. Fred, thanks for reminding me of this! I won't be near my TV around the holiday but thanks for your reminder, via this thread, I am going to DVR some of them that I haven't seen (or think I haven't) during the marathon and will watch when I get back later on. Thanks again! And Happy New Year!!

  5. The Good:

I've purchased only a couple of sets from them---Torchy Blane and then the horror/mystery collection. Both are good to excellent print quality and I've had no problems playing them in my cheapie 20 buck DVD player. Haven't tried them on anything else, but they are fine and I dig watching them!

The other good is that more and more films from their library are showing up as available and that can only be a good thing!

    The Bad:

Price, price, price. I'm on a tight budget and cannot afford paying 19.99 or even 15 bucks for a single film. The packs are decent though and when I can afford them I will purchase them, as I have. They need to do more of that. Even 3 for like 25 isn't bad (they have a couple like that), so they need to do more of that, and less of 19.99 per. That isn't in my budget, can't do it, unless I win the lottery (then I'd buy the entire collection, because it's that good)!

    The sort of bad:

Pressed DVD's are better, and also the full sets with the better cover art, the extras (including commentaries which I totally love!!!), and I'm sorry for their seeming demise, though it seems the future is on demand, whether a DVD or streaming.

All in all, a good concept, but the prices are waaaaaaaay too high.

  6. I dunno...I just relax and enjoy the fantasy that is on the screen.

Do we expect Edward G. Robinson and Bogie to be actual gangsters off-screen? Films, for me, are about fantasy and larger-than-life characters.

Bigger than life, and I enjoy that part of it. It was a fun day.

I loved watching TRUE GRIT, hadn't seen it in a while, and wow, powerful story! I dunno...The Duke IS that character, tough to imagine anyone else filling those shoes.

What I can appreciate is that even if we don't dig who and what someone is off-screen, I can lose myself in the image that is generated by the film itself and by star power. It was compelling then and remains so for me now!

  7. First, hope everyone has a very happy holiday! I will be mostly out of touch for the next week or so, and will be far from TCM viewing, so will have to catch the following on the trusty DVR after the New Year:

Will Rogers night on Tuesday!!! Gotta groove to these early 30's films, can't wait to check them out, most of them I've never seen before!!!

And of course the Marx Bros on NY Eve!! What a way to spend it! 4 of the Paramount's and 3 of the MGM's (including the 2 best)!

Thank you, TCM!!! Awesome holiday gifts to groove to!

  8. Not terribly interested in the Mick films airing today unfortunately but have the day off so catching up on some of the DVD packs I've obtained recently. I thought I'd crack open one of the PD film packs I haven't yet, called "Mobster Movie Pack" from Platinum Disc Corp. Some gems on here, watched a WB film that must have fallen into PD, LADY GANGSTER, which is a remake, of sorts, of LADIES THEY TALK ABOUT, not anywhere close to on par with it, but a pretty decent B programmer from the 40's nevertheless.

Watched a few of the other flicks so far, most pretty cool, but definitely B programming at it's zenith! However, really dug this one, ESCAPE BY NIGHT from 1937 and Republic Pictures. Heartwarming gangster/crime story, and recommended if you get a chance to catch it!

BTW, this pack is available on Amazon for about 15 bucks, for 20 flicks that's not a bad deal! Quality is about what you'd expect for PD films, though generally most of them are pretty decent.

  9. This is a pretty cool idea! I'm a HUGE fan of commentary tracks on the classic films I purchase (and wish they would do more actually!!). And I've often thought I'd love to hear more from RO and others on the films! They have so little time at the beginning and end, that I'd love to hear them go on about it more! So yeah, maybe once per week or something, it would be cool if they'd just run on about it in a special airing of a classic film! Love it!

  10. It's a perennial watch for me and I can even tolerate the ads, but AMC is horrid. Thank goodness, they weren't the only station that had rights to it, WGN has them too! I watched it last Saturday night and grooved, even with the ads. They had a nice retro interstitial before and after the ad break too, which I dug.

Cool that TCM will be able to air early next year. Maybe that will lead to being able to show it for the holiday season next year. Fox has been pretty amenable to TCM of late, so we'll see!

  11. Wow. Now that I've calmed down from totally rocking over the initial viewing of the schedule, there is just so many sick films in March, and it seems to be overflowing with 1930's films!

Here is just some of what I'm totally grooving to:

Tuesday nights, excluding the first one, will be dedicated to Jean Harlow, SOTM! Tons of pre-codes and 30's as she sadly passed away before the end of the decade. But thankfully her films are well preserved, and will provide treats to fans all month long!

Saturday mornings will still give us more Bowery Boys flix!!! Groove hard!

Before we're released from the clutches of "31 Days of Oscar" they leave us with the 1929 THE BROADWAY MELODY late on Mar 3! Groovy!

I'm not even going to mention all of the Harlow films during the month, they ALL totally rock, but Mar 8 features a flick I've never seen, a 1932 pre-code THREE WISE GIRLS, with Marie Prevost! I can't wait to check that one out!

Mar 9 prime time features secretary's on the prowl, and a ton of 1930's films are included!

More pre-codes and 30's films on Sat, Mar 12! Wow, we're not even half-way through the month and it's out of control!

The morning of Mar 13 (Sunday) features GOING HOLLYWOOD (1933), SHANGHAI EXPRESS (1932) and AFTER THE THIN MAN (1936)!! And later that day, the Silent Sunday feature is the incredible THE PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC, the 1928 masterpiece directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer!!!

Monday, Mar 14 features a block of films starring George Brent, with more pre-codes, natch!!! Such gems as THE RICH ARE ALWAYS WITH US (1932), THEY CALL IT SIN (1932), FROM HEADQUARTERS (1933), THE PAINTED VEIL (1934) and 30's films including STAMBOUL QUEST (1934) and THE RIGHT TO LIVE (1935) the latter a flick I've never seen before!

The wee hours of Wed, Mar 15 features a pre-code gem I've not seen before, starring John Barrymore, REUNION IN VIENNA!!

SUNNY SIDE UP (1929) Mar 16

FEMALE (1933) Mar 17 prime time!

It's outta control I tell ya! Is this 1994?? :)

It doesn't end! On Friday, Mar 18, Edward Everett Horton is featured and wow, more pre-codes and 30's flix including ROAR OF THE DRAGON (1932), LONELY WIVES (1932), KISS ME AGAIN (1931), SING AND LIKE IT (1934), SMARTY (1934)!! Lots more!!

Sunday evening, Mar 20 features some George Murphy films rarely seen, such as THE PUBLIC MENACE (1935) and THE WOMEN MEN MARRY (1937)!!

For proto noir fans, 1937's THE GAVE HIM A GUN airs on Monday, Mar 21!!

And for fans of noir in it's heyday, check out CAUGHT from 1949 later on in prime time!

Wed, Mar 23 features a lot of noir and crime all day and into the evening with EXPERIMENT IN TERROR, SHOCK CORRIDOR, THEY LIVE BY NIGHT, GUN CRAZY, and in the evening, LITTLE MISS MARKER and A SLIGHT CASE OF MURDER inject some humor into the gangster milieu!

Thurs, Mar 24 sees more pre-codes and 30's films! 20, 000 YEARS IN SING SING leads it off, THE CAT AND THE FIDDLE, and tons more throughout the day!!

And just when you thought things were kind of chilling down, TCM comes storming back on Mar 29th with a daytime tribute to Warner Baxter, which includes SEVEN--count 'em--7 "Crime Doctor" films!!! Outtasight!! Rock and roll!!! I think the only ones missing are the ones without "Crime Doctor" in the title--3 of them. Hopefully they'll show up sometime soon, but I can dig this hard!

There's a lot more I missed, but wow....I want to take off work all month long!!! It's a trip! TCM is sick! Thanks for one of the BEST monthly schedules EVER!

  12. I really dug watching this flick tonight! One of my all time faves!

The ending is somewhat unsatisfactory but it doesn't really ruin my experience of the film, nor how it affected me--powerfully. I'm not really sure what else they could have done though, and in the end, the ending is fine, and I've come to accept it.

The print was fairly decent, I also noticed the opening, and it seemed different than I remembered but it's also been a while since I've seen the entire film, so I could be mis-remembering.

Great way to spend a Saturday night, if you ask me!

  13. Valentine, I'm with you! I dig marathons actually! One of my favorite months of all time was about 2 years ago when TCM aired marathon blocks of series films every weekday during the month!!!! It rocked!

As for sequence, my main man Kyle is right, and the Hardy films were kind of unique in that they aired them backwards. They rarely do that, and usually run them the other way around when running series films, but occasionally there are gaps in the run, as he mentioned. Sometimes I think that is due to programming time as well.
