Miss Wonderly, Sorry that I missed mentioning last night's Brit Noir's! I sort of looked ahead to Monday and beyond for the week! I also missed watching them (or getting them on the DVR), unfortunately!! Were you able to catch them? What did you (or anyone who saw them) think? Some interesting comments in this thread about them, thanks! And for QUICKSAND, yep, glad you saw that flick is coming up later in the month! I'm also looking forward to watching it again!

The Bowery Boys on Saturday mornings... thanks TCM!
markbeckuaf replied to HollywoodGolightly's topic in General Discussions
Musicalnovelty, thank you for sharing that, particularly as I did not see that write-up! That's awesome to hear about! -
I really dig commentaries! I prefer sets and films that have them! I have pretty much liked all the commentaries I've heard except for anything Drew Caspar does, man that dude, I don't know! The rest, even if they aren't that knowledgeable about one aspect or another, they still seem pretty interesting to me, and I really did listening! I have thoroughly enjoyed the commentaries on the Chan sets, the Sherlock Holmes set, and two of the Universal Horror Legacy series (Frankenstein and Dracula) sets. Also the MGM Horror collection, those are all really good. And most of the Gangster and Noir sets. I also loved the Pre-code commentaries, and the one you mentioned, NIGHT NURSE, I just listened to this past weekend and really enjoyed it also! Basically I prefer them to not having them. If they suck, you can just turn them off, but I have found them pretty much always a decent listen!

Hope TCM comes out with more Pre-Code Archives!

Thanks! Yes, that is in my queue!!! Looks like a great set! -
Any word on whether or not FOX will put out some of their noir films on collection sets (like Warners did) rather than just as individual titles? That would be so cool! Any news is appreciated!

Lots of groovy flix this week courtesy of TCM!!! First up are a couple of Busby Berkely pre-codes on Monday daytime: GOLD DIGGERS OF 1933---Warren William--I need say no more but I should cos this flick is so cool! 42ND STREET---another great pre-code backstage musical, choreographed like only Busby could! I dig it! Tues is my Va-Va-Va-Voom day!!! Sorry have a huge crush on Virginia Mayo, and TCM is honoring her on her birthday--and treating us--with a day full of her films, which include some crime and noir films, notably, SMART GIRLS DON'T TALK and FLAXY MARTIN!! Yowza!!! Somehow a B programmer gets tagged on to Tuesday, with CAPTAIN SCARFACE and my man Barton MacLane! Coolio! Wed wee hours (4:30am EST) we are treated to THE BITTER TEA OF GENERAL YEN, a great pre-code Capra with Babs Stanwyck! Awesome flick!! Thursday is the first SOTM 24 hour day with The Mick!!! This first one sees a lot of his early pre-code films when he was but a wee tot! Included is: BEAST OF THE CITY (awesome hard-hitting crime pre-code with Walter Huston and Jean Harlow as the sexiest vamp you ever did see!), BROADWAY TO HOLLYWOOD (1933), THE CHIEF (1933), THE LIFE OF JIMMY DOLAN (1933), and with a sexy young Loretta!, BLIND DATE (1934), DEATH ON THE DIAMOND (1934), HIDEOUT (1934), MANHATTAN MELODRAMA (1934)--great crime drama with Gable, Powell and Loy!!!, UPPER WORLD (1934)---awesome groovy pre-code with Warren William--YEAH!!!-Mary Astor (when she was young she was a **** extraordinaire!!), and Ginger Rogers--hotcha!!! Plus an outstanding support cast! I know not all of those are strictly pre-code, but most are and the ones that aren't, are borderline just after the code was implemented and still treading that line! Plus the early to mid-30's man--great time for films!! A couple more during the late afternoon and early evening of note with The Mick's tribute is: DOWN THE STRETCH (1936). I've never seen this and look forward to it! AH, WILDERNESS (1935) Ditto! RIFF-RAFF (1936) About as pre-code as you can get in 1936 with Jean Harlow and Spencer Tracy heating up the screen! THE DEVIL IS A SISSY (1936) Never saw it and want to! LIVE, LOVE AND LEARN (1937) Roz Russel and Bob Montgomery--oh those 30's!!! Friday we are treated to some crime and noir gems including MAN HUNT (1941) which is borderline on this theme, but wow, what a harrowing and very poignant war-time drama, somewhat off-beat, with Walter Pidgeon and Joan Bennett---tears my heart out absolutely. THE BLUE DAHLIA--Ladd and Veronica---hotcha!!--Lake! THE BIG CLOCK (wow, great noir with Charles Laughton doing what he does best!) KISS ME DEADLY--been a while since I saw this seedy little noir and can't wait to do so again! Later that evening, one of my new favorite holiday films, IT HAPPENED ON FIFTH AVENUE---just love it!! Early Sat morning: THE SAINT IN NEW YORK!!! Yes, a crime/detective flick from the 30's always gotta dig them! Followed by A NIGHT AT THE OPERA, possibly the best of the Marx Bros, certainly with MGM! A CHRISTMAS CAROL--the 1938 gem my favorite rendition of that tale! Always makes me bawl like a baby at the end! And of course, my main men, The Bowery Boys feature, this week the boys are in the jungle, with JUNGLE GENTS!!! TCM...you simply rock the house!!

The Bowery Boys on Saturday mornings... thanks TCM!

Grooving on this morning's Bowery Boys treat!!!! PARIS PLAYBOYS!! Had to catch last week's on the DVR, as I couldn't watch last weekend, and it was funny and totally cool!!! Thank you TCM for this weekly treat, I dig it totally!!! -
I have 2 of the volumes, still have yet to get the first one, but the two I have are awesome! One is a solid Wild Bill Wellman set, the other is absolutely fantastic with a couple of great commentaries on THE DIVORCEE and NIGHT NURSE. Hope that they'll produce more of these sets, I prefer them to the on-demand stuff from the WB Archives--better pricing for one thing! And more extras!

Given as a gift, this set is AWESOME!!! Commentaries, pristine prints, great stuff!!! The complete Universal films of Abbott and Costello!

Being relatively new to this particular forum, I didn't realize you had it set up this way until just now, so will stick to that, or post them in other forums. Sorry man! -

2 volumes of Pre-Code Hollywood--TCM Archives
markbeckuaf posted a topic in Classic Film DVD Reviews
I wish TCM would do more with the Archives series, particularly this one! I have both of these, still checking out Vol 2. Vol 1 is the only one I don't have yet, only because no commentaries. Hope TCM will continue this series!!! -
Thanksgiving gratitude, TCM style
markbeckuaf replied to MyFavoriteFilms's topic in General Discussions
I'm with you MFF! Thanks to TCM for all that they do! I love the classics and those not so classic but old and B or even lesser budget, great stuff! I'm also an advocate that there should be more films on DVD, and I hope that trend continues for all the classic era studio film libraries. I'm not as big a fan of the MOD stuff, and prefer the classy releases of a a few years ago with commentaries and extras. I'm really hoping we move back to that soon! But in any event, get them released, by all means! -
Nov. 23rd Boris Karloff's birthday tribute
markbeckuaf replied to filmlover's topic in General Discussions
I also dug Ish! I believe TCM has shown all 4 of the 1940s Dick Tracy films a few times, sometimes separately, and occasionally in blocks of 2-4 of them. They are also PD and I have all of them on a couple of those 50 film packs. Great Boris lineup, still grooving to a few of them! -
Just came home from Thanksgiving Dinner and TCM is airing this fun comedy!!! One of my favorite Bob Hope films and one of my favorite comedies of all time! Great support cast with Peter Lorre and Lon Chaney, Jr! Thank you TCM!!
-
Thanks, Kyle! You too, and to everyone who shares in the holiday, may it be a wonderful one!

It was a GREAT day! I didn't have a chance to watch anything that day but will be visiting on the DVR! Thanks TCM for an awesome day of films!!! I will be particularly looking forward to YOU'LL FIND OUT, one of my favorite horror spoofs!!! -
This is an awesome pre-code flick, one of the most outrageous and one of my faves! Thanks to TCM for airing it the other day!!

What Made You Stop Going To The Movies Nowadays?
markbeckuaf replied to ERROL23's topic in General Discussions
I still go once in a great while (like once in a few years). For me it's about choices and limits. Limited time and money and preferences, which mine are for old black and white movies, and I get pretty much all I need there on TCM!!
