Hear, hear! Not a huge fan of DK's films to be honest, and I watched some other stuff last night, but I was happy to see that it was on and did tune in a few times just to see Don do his stuff! I was a HUGE fan of his work on The Andy Griffith Show, so it was nice to see him honored last night by TCM.

    > It's too bad the Hollywood series is very hard to find for those of us who were not lucky to experience it. I would love to hear James Mason's voice narrating about the Silent Era.

I also would absolutely LOVE if this series were made available on DVD!! I remember catching an episode or two on a Public TV station many years ago, and I remember hearing James Mason and seeing such wonder on the screen, and also the plaintive, sad and somewhat melancholy musical score. I would LOVE to see this released in conjunction with the Moguls set!

I still give TCM a 9 out of 10 score; last year they gave me the whole Basil Rathbone/Sherlock Holmes series on Christmas AND the William Powell /Thin Man movies on New Years Eve.

I'm with you, MrRoberts! And they gave us Bogie all month last year, and I'll admit I dig him more! But a living legend, someone still with us, it's awesome! PLUS, we get the Marx Bros on NYE this year!!!

  4. Bing, I'm with you 100%!!!! I'm not sure if they have the new morning opening anywhere on the site, but I'm sure one of our knowledgeable posters will know!

I totally agree, and thank you for reminding me of the song of that older morning opening! I totally dug that and I still like it better even than the newest one, but the newest one is WAY better than the one with the sax, the dude running up the stairs, etc---it was too loud and made me think of going to work, you're right, and who needs or wants that??? LOL

I also totally dug the big band intro for afternoon films, but I agree, that the newer one is better than the depressing one that they had for a while. I actually liked the music of that one, but again, it was too dark and somber.

I also agree that the old evening intro they had for tons and tons of years was the best and the current one is weak. I hope they change that one soon.

And agree, I'm also very glad they retained the late night one, that is WAY cool and perfect for late night classic film viewing. It also reminds me of the late 80's and 90's for some reason, and I like that!

  5. The Mick!!! I have to admit that I hadn't really looked that carefully at December as some things in my life may have intruded upon me enjoying it fully, but it looks like that will be delayed a bit, so I'll get to enjoy a month long tribute to The Mick!! Thursdays all month, all Mick, all day 24 hours!!! The first one has a ton of pre-codes, and though I'm not as big a fan of some of his musicals, I do have a soft spot for the Hardy series, and also included is a ton of his later flicks, often noir!

Thank you, TCM!!! What a great and wonderful tribute to a living legend!!! I hope they have a chance to bring him to introduce some of the films, that would be even more awesome!!

Just ordered the B films in this set, good price for these!!! Thank you for the notice!!

  7. Miss Goddess,

So sorry you can't see it! I'm feeling very lucky to be able to watch it daily! I haven't seen it in ages before now!

I agree with you about Paul Fix, great character actor (long time in films too!), and his presence is awesome in this show, I agree! I love the bond between he and Lucas (there is one episode in particular that kind of provides the background for that). It's like he's his dad!

  8. I know what you mean, "The Falcon" films haven't been aired for a little while. Would love to see a full day of the films, but also would be great if these, along with those other mystery series, would make it to a DVD release in a box set.

I know that WB Archives recently released the Torchy Blane series in a box set, and I snatched that right up! Would do the same for these others for sure!

  9. Redriver, I agree with you about the theme! And also the music that is used throughout the show, it's always very intense! Keeps you glued to the screen!

Today's show was great, one of those where Lucas didn't have to draw down in order to make his point and help someone out. I love how there is always that edge of menace with his character, like he will snap on you at any moment if given a reason, but you do have to give him a reason and sometimes even then he will hold back for any number of reasons, one of those to set an example for his son. He's a moral compass of a bygone era.

  10. Kingrat, thank you for your thoughts about WOMAN ON THE BEACH!!! I'm not sure if Charles Bickford was blind or not for real...but wow, what a great noir actor, always tough as nails! Very intense flick, I thought!

And glad you enjoyed the Pat O'Brien day! Very groovy and wow, really loved all those flicks! THE PEOPLE AGAINST O'HARA a very underrated flick, very good one!

The programmers deserve a medal for this one!

  11. Sorry I had a problem last week and couldn't keep up with things like I love to on TCM, but wow, Wheeler and Woolsey are my homies and I need to represent and make sure that TCM knows without question how much I love seeing these guys on the air!! Thanks to Edna May Oliver's tribute last week, we were treated to TWO W&W flicks, HALF SHOT TO SUNRISE and CRACKED NUTS, both of them incredibly hilarious! Please keep the Wheeler and Woolsey flicks coming!!! Great stuff!!

  12. Wow, TCM is rocking the house this coming week!!!

Monday kicks off with some out of control noir in THE CRIMSON KIMONO, THE BIG HEAT, and THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI!! All during the day!!!

Evening is all about the Moguls and Movie Stars, including some GREAT silent flicks including SUNRISE, THE IRON HORSE and FLESH AND THE DEVIL (Greta baby!!!)

Wednesday is all about waking up to pre-codes! Awesome stuff! ARSENE LUPIN including the Barrymore bro's on opposite sides of the law. RED-HEADED WOMAN one of the most outrageous pre-code flicks there ever was, with Jean Harlow showing us why she was...well....hot! Chester Morris and Una Merkel rock here too! And MIDNIGHT MARY, with an incredibly sexy young Loretta Young vamping it up along with one of my main men, Ricardo Cortez! Awesome!

That same day in the evening we are treated to Chaplin, Keaton and Llloyd, the triumvirate comic actors of the silent era, bar none!!! And to boot, we have IT, with the hotcha Clara Bow!!! Yowza!!!

Thursday morning finds us in some more pre-code heaven with the macabre and wild THE MASK OF FU MANCHU, with a deliciously wicked Myrna Loy, Boris doing his thing and on the edge pre-code horror!! Oh Myrna, whip him again!!!! :) Whoooh!

And though not pre-code, if you dig on Cagney and O'Brien (which I most certainly do!), you will love DEVIL DOGS OF THE AIR on Thursday morning, followed by one of my favorite ever Leslie Howard flicks, THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL!

Lots more stuff for every taste this coming week, but these are some of the flicks I'll be grooving to!!!

  13. Just recently purchased the Frankenstein and Dracula Universal Horror sets, and wow, I was really grooving to the commentaries on both! I think the commentary on the original 31 FRANKENSTEIN is one of the best ever, as is the commentary on the '31 DRACULA. Anyone else have these? I am wanting to get the Mummy and Wolfman sets as well soon. Hope that TCM is able to get these back on perhaps next year?

    > The 1956 Ten Commandments is one of the greatest films ever made directed by Cecil B. DeMille, one of Hollywood's greatest directors.

Hear hear!!! I absolutely adore this film! One reason is that when I was a young whippersnapper, someone took me to it when it was being re-released on the big screen, and OMG!!!! I was in total awe!!! That experience stuck with me to this day and I absolutely love this flick!!!

Now, I have not seen the silent version yet, but would love to. I'm sure I would enjoy it also.
