Did anyone catch THE WOMAN ON THE BEACH yet??? I have it saved on the trusty DVR from TCM the other day and can't wait to check it out!! I've seen it before, a LONG time ago, from TCM.

MFF, IMHO, Nick At Nite ruled as far as classic TV in the 80's and early 90's! They showed SUCH great shows, and while TVLand was better than it is now back in their first 5 years, they never approached the quality of Nick At Nite. NAN used to have Mr. Ed, Car 54 Where Are You?, the first 5 seasons of My Three Sons (best IMO), Donna Reed, Adventures of Superman, Ann Sothern, and tons more! I really loved that station and would watch it EVERY night (this was before the days of TCM remember, and I never had AMC back in their glory days unfortunately).
TVLand sucks if you are looking for 50's and 60's classic television. They aren't even doing 70's classics much of a credit.
THIS and Retro TV got it going on these days in terms of classic shows!

Actually...the past few years, the Feb schedule hasn't been too bad, and is often quite good. The only thing I don't tend to dig that much is that you won't usually find very many B films on the schedule, and generally the lower budget noirs, which I dig so much. But I can find things to groove to!
For example:
The first day rocks in the morning with flicks from 1933 and 1934 including THE THIN MAN and MANHATTAN MELODRAMA. I mean, you gotta rock!
On Feb 3, in PRIME TIME, no less, you have a ton of flicks from 1929 and 1930! Love it! Flicks like THE LOVE PARADE (1929), THE BIG HOUSE (1930), THE DIVORCEE (1930), and DISRAELI (1929). Those are the BOMB!
That is only the tip of the iceberg. There are tons more great flicks showing up in "Oscar Month"! Thanks TCM!

Mine looked fine, Arch, hope yours was also! it's a great flick (HAVING WONDERFUL CRIME), great B comedy/mystery, and wow, totally digging on Carole Landis too!!

I'm definitely pre-code all the way!!!

I think it would be fascinating to imagine if the code had been held off for even just another year or two. I do see some films in late 34 and 35 that are sort of code-marginal, IMO. They may have been censored but there is enough there that sometimes enough still gets through to make them hard-hitting, or even gets overlooked somewhat if they are mostly a B film.

This is such a GREAT film!!! Really love it!!! Ryan is awesome and I agree, it's a timeless film! Thanks for airing it, TCM!!
-
Wow, thank you, TCM!!!! Caught that Thelma short right after the Bowery Boys feature today!!! Grooving hard to MAID IN HOLLYWOOD, with Patsy!! Awesome stuff!!! Dig on Thelma!!! Hotcha-cha-cha!!!

I am grooving on this today!!!! Love Thelma!!! Hotcha-cha-cha!

Had to catch today's feature, CLIPPED WINGS, on DVR, as I had to work earlier today, but wow, grooving to it now! I love these guys!!!
-
Wow, thank you all so much for your kind and wonderful comments!!!! I broke down and wept when I read them, to be honest!!!
I'm so glad that everyone had a chance to view these awesome films!!!
For me, TCM is just the bomb diggy!!! And Finance, how do you know that RO doesn't rock out??

These flicks were soooooo cool! I totally dug watching A DANGEROUS PROFESSION, and yes, Ella Raines---hotcha!!!
And wow, WONDERFUL CRIME, such a cool flick!
George Raft is an awesome guy, I just love hearing his voice! I could listen to it all day and night!
-
I missed some of these AWESOME silent films too! I wish they would compile them onto some box sets in honor of this series of films! I'd certainly scoop them up, they are GREAT and I'd love to see them again and again!
-
Wow, folks, how about tomorrow which includes WONDERFUL CRIME (comedy/crime flick), CRACK-UP (great noir flick!!), A DANGEROUS PROFESSION (Raft and O'Brien!), THE WOMAN ON THE BEACH (rarely seen Robert Ryan, Joan Bennett, Charles Bickford flick!) and THE SET-UP (always a great watch)!!! Pretty awesome day on Thursday!!
-
Grooving to Pat O'Brien on TCM on Thursday, Nov 11! Mainly for the pairing with my main man George Raft in a seldom seen noir/crime film, A DANGEROUS PROFESSION, really looking forward to that!!! But also you gotta dig the comedy/mystery WONDERFUL CRIME, and the very cool noir CRACK-UP! Not to mention THE PEOPLE AGAINST O'HARA and FIGHTING FATHER DUNNE!
This is a rocking cool day on TCM!

Yes, I totally groove to THE SCAR!!! I also have it on one of those cheapie 50 movie packs, and it's great! I also saw it on TCM and really love it, great stuff! And an intense ending, where your sentiments do switch around, at least for me! I also grooved hard to WOMAN IN THE WINDOW, outstanding print, wow!
-
Sorry I wasn't here to groove in advance, but totally dug the day dedicated to Edna Mae Oliver!!!! Mainly because of the THREE films with James Gleason (Hildegaarde Withers), B mysteries extraordinaire, and of course her flicks with my main men, Wheeler and Woolsey!!!! Rock and roll!!! TCM is the bomb diggy!!!

Really love THIS channel! I never saw it before I moved, and it rocks, for a commercial channel. I wish they'd show more classic films, though they show their share, and they have some great classic TV shows mixed in! To go along with them, also Retro TV! Both channels add up to WAY better than TVLand which totally sucks these days.
TCM is unmatched as far as classic films, no question, but for classic TV shows, THIS and RetroTV are pretty darn cool!
-
I agree with you both about the ending! It was completely apropos! After that scene though it had a bit of sadness in the final scene, I thought, interesting for a film of this type, but most appropriate given the events of the night.
-
Yes, that's the one I meant! Very cool, yep it's on my "want list"! That documentary alone sounded like a winner to me!
I'm also a huge fan of commentaries on classic films! I'm disappointed to hear that Vol 5, which you mentioned in your previous post, doesn't have any! Bummer! But it does have a TON of mostly B and hard to find films, so that's a plus! Both are on my "to get" list! These are the only two of the Warner series of noir I don't have.
-
I have seen that one, THE BISHOP MURDER CASE, and it's a very good one, a good early talkie! I couldn't help but think of Sherlock Holmes, though I thought he played it a little differently (9 years before first playing Holmes).
I honestly have only seen one of the Powell films, the one that is in public domain and that TCM plays fairly often, THE KENNEL MURDER CASE. It's too bad we haven't had a chance to see the other Paramount films with Powell.

Great information in this thread! Thank you, folks!

Caught THE GARDEN MURDER CASE thanks to TCM yesterday. Another great detective film, though I felt that Paul Lukas was one of the weakest Philo Vance among the many who played him. IMHO William Powell and Warren William were the best though. Even though I think Lukas is a little out of his element in this character, the rest of the cast is great, and it's a very good film!
Another winner, TCM!

> I could look it up, but I'm too lazy. Who was in it?
Marshall Thompson, who I thought was a weak lead, but the supporting cast, particularly the bar patrons, were all great! William Conrad as the bartender led that group, which also featured Leon Ames and Virginia Field and Andrea King. Real B film, but great, I think! I caught it a few years ago on TCM.
Miss Wonderly: I'm wanting to get that set sometime soon! I still have to get Vol 3 though, do you have that one, and if so, how is it?

Anyone else catch this little known MGM B mystery flick this past week? I dug it! It wasn't much of a mystery, as we the viewer see who the perp is, but it's a pretty grisly film and honestly I thought somewhat of a somber tone in spots, particularly the end. The bad dude is REALLY bad (and you'll know why if you've seen the flick). I like Edmond Lowe, he has that easy going style that I really enjoy. I had the feeling they may have been thinking of a series of films with his character (named "Chris Cross", but I don't believe they did. Too bad!
Thanks, TCM, for airing these little known gems!

Thanks to Amazon, I ordered "Film Noir: The Dark Side of Hollywood" and I can't wait to check it out! Anyone else have this box set? It has a GREAT Joan Crawford flick, SUDDEN FEAR, as well as Hugh Beaumont (Ward Cleaver) in RAILROADED, a very overlooked and outstanding B-noir, BEHIND LOCKED DOORS!! Also includes HANGMEN ALSO DIE and THE LONG NIGHT!!
