  1. I dug all those flicks! I haven't seen A YANK AT BURMA ROAD yet, but plan to, thanks to TCM!!

I also really love FINGERS AT THE WINDOW, fun, trippy flick, with Basil in fine form!

Always loved Laraine Day, I forgot that she went under a different name for those O'Brien B's. She's always fun to watch on screen!

  2. Hey Love! Thanks for the great advice about Amazon! I just started working on my collection this past summer, so just getting the hang of things! I have found that often ordering from one of the Marketplace sellers can grab you some great deals! So far, my orders through them have always been what I expected, often faster shipping than orders fulfilled directly by Amazon. And you can find some of the Chan sets for less--not the TCM Spotlight though. I may pull the trigger on that Chan set soon, as I mentioned, I want to support TCM in their putting out those rare Chan flicks, and hopefully they will do more. I understand the quality of the films is impeccable on that set!

As for Noir, yep, the latest Noir set is definitely a good price for the number of films you get, all in great quality, I'm sure, but I got spoiled with commentaries on the other sets, plus those on all of the Gangster sets. That's why I started with Vol 4 of the Noir Collection, because it has 10 films and all with commentaries!

I'll pull the trigger on Vol 5 eventually though for sure!

I do have KC CONFIDENTIAL on a cheapie 100 Mystery set from TreeLine. Those are good, but of course quality varies, though you get a ton of great films for a very, very cheap price. That high quality Amazon has though sounds like a good idea for that price!

OMG, that sounds hilarious!!! I hope to catch that film sometime!

  4. I'm actually kinda grooving that they are airing some of the more rare Hitch flix---like RICH AND STRANGE, and I CONFESS (rarely aired anywhere!).

What will I be watching? Wow! Ok...all on TCM over the next few weeks:

    VAMPYR (wow!)

RETURN OF THE VAMPIRE (Bela, yes!!)

    DOCTOR X--Fay Wray! :)

THE MYSTERY OF THE WAX MUSEUM--Fay again! Hotcha!

THE VAMPIRE BAT--more FAY!! Be still my beating heart!!!

THE APE (A rare Boris flick!)

ISLE OF THE DEAD (Lewton and Karloff-a match made at Halloween!--very moody atmospheric film!)

    A Bela 3-fer:

    THE CORPSE VANISHES

THE DEVIL BAT (delicious low-budget creepiness!)

WHITE ZOMBIE--one of my all time faves!!

More Lewton: I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE--love that flick!

    A Karloff 3-fer:

    THE DEVIL COMMANDS

    THE GHOUL (yes!)

THE WALKING DEAD--one of my faves, WB gangsters meet the ghouls!

Even The Bowery Boys chip in:

THE BOWERY BOYS MEET THE MONSTERS (never saw this!)

    MAD LOVE---creepy Lorre thriller!

THE LEOPARD MAN a very underrated Lewton flick, very moody!

    MARK OF THE VAMPIRE---old fave!

THE TINGLER---love that low budget cheapie, such a sick film! LOL

    Digging it!

  5. I should add, that I will definitely get the TCM Spotlight on the Chan films...as soon as I can actually, to contribute to TCM and their efforts there, as well as hopefully convincing them to re-package the remainder of the Monogram Toler Chan films and put them out affordably in sets like these! I will say though that if this set had even one commentary track, I would have purchased it by now! *hint hint* :)

  6. Love, I would take a chance on one of the Chan sets, if I were you. I think you'd like them! I have 4 of them, with a 5th on the way. I have all of the Oland, and one of the Toler's on the way. Still holding off a bit on that TCM set, but will get that one eventually too. I'd start with one of the Oland's as I tend to like him the best---probably Set 3, the one with Charlie Chan's Secret, which has a good commentary track. Plus the earliest surviving Chan flick, THE BLACK CAMEL, with a meaty appearance by Bela Lugosi! Toler is great too though and his flix are very, very good. You really can't go wrong if you love old school detective B's.

  7. Miss Wonderly, very cool! That book sounds like a great read, and good for you, getting the gift of Vol 5 of the Noir collection! I've been eyeing that but keeping it on the backburner, only because it lacks commentaries, and I've become a "commentary junkie" for these film sets! I have Set 4 (great one!) and Set 1 so far, and the commentaries are ACES! Along with the great flix of course! I have Set 2 on the way...and Set 3 not far behind...and then probably Set 5. I hope they will continue to pump them out, but I really hope they'll bring back the commentaries! I know it might add to the expense, but hopefully not too much?

  8. I agree, I think generally the stories were a bit better when Tom took over in "The Falcon" series....but they were different too. I sort of had the impression when they started this series with George they wanted to make it somewhat markedly different from "The Saint"? I don't know! LOL But they did seem to have a different "tone" for the most part when Tom was in the lead, but even then, they were up and down (with sidekicks, etc). I love them all though in their own way!

Speaking of doubles, I loved THE SAINT'S DOUBLE TROUBLE! It is underrated IMO, and has a very unique blend of humor, crime and pathos, in a way...and one of the best endings ever in any B-series detective film, IMO! Plus it has Bela Lugosi!!! Though he's not given nearly enough to do given his incredible screen presence (a flaw that many filmmakers seemed to make in his middle to later career), it was still great to see him!!

  9. I really dig the Constance Bennett WHAT PRICE HOLLYWOOD, and can't wait to check it out on the 22nd! And it features Lowell Sherman, one of my favorites of early hollywood! I have to watch anything he's in!

Oh and I agree with the previous comments about THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES. What an incredibly powerful film with performances that are simply magnificent! It totally rocks!

  10. Thank you, Love, and Audrey!

I hope you both had a chance to catch UNHOLY PARTNERS, I caught it once a long time ago, and am catching it this evening from today's lineup (from the cable DVR). I recall it was really a great and very underrated (IMHO) flick!

I also have yet to see all the Saint films from yesterday, but will catch up eventually! Watched a little over half yesterday evening!

Lots of great stuff on TCM, greatest channel on cable!

  11. Wow, today's lineup has been awesome!!!!

Here's what I'll be grooving to over the next few days---hope you will be too!

Tomorrow morning---MAKE ME A STAR---1932 flick with Joan Blondell and Stu Erwin, pre-code fun, natch!!

Digging on George O'Brien's tribute tomorrow, with some of his B-Westerns in a groovy block, including BORDER G-MAN, PAINTED DESERT, ARIZONA LEGION!

Later on Wed afternoon, during a Laraine Day fest, an outstanding and fairly rare Eddie G flick, with Edward Arnold---UNHOLY PARTNERS!

And another relatively rare flick, though has been seen not too long ago on TCM: FINGERS AT THE WINDOW, starring the Dr. Kildare couple (Ayres and Day), plus Basil Rathbone in a deliciously wicked role!! Kinda looking forward to A YANK ON THE BURMA ROAD which follows, too! Another Day flick!

Prime time tomorrow night: THE GENERAL, with Buster Keaton! Yes!

Late Wed/Early Thurs AM, two noirs back to back! John Garfield in HE RAN ALL THE WAY, followed by the outstanding noir, TENSION, with Richard Basehart, Audrey Totter, and Cyd Charisse!

Thursday morning, you gotta groove hard to two Lillian Gish silents--BROKEN BLOSSOMS and ORPHANS OF THE STORM!!

This is followed by a Hitch block of some flicks that aren't the usual suspects: RICH AND STRANGE, a pre-code, followed by I CONFESS (very rare airing of this GREAT flick!), THE WRONG MAN, DIAL M FOR MURDER! That's a slick block of Hitch, IMO!!

Later Thursday night, the VERY rare comedy with Freddie Mac--MURDER HE SAYS!

Friday morning---GROOVE hard to FIVE STAR FINAL, one of my favorite pre-codes with Eddie G! Why is that not on a box set already???

Saturday, you have to be digging on another Bowery Boys flick, followed this time by another heavy hitter in HIGH SIERRA!!

Then Sat night---wow, tribute to Marlene Dietrich, particularly looking forward to A KNIGHT WITHOUT ARMOUR, MOROCCO, RANCHO NOTORIOUS and THE BLUE ANGEL! Dig it!

And don't miss out on a very early Monday morning airing of THE MOB, a very awesome crime/noir flick with Broderick Crawford! Hot stuff, get 'em here, right on TCM!!!

Digging on it! TCM rocks the house!

It was an awesome thread, I'll agree, and got me through many rough times last year, along with the great films that TCM aired---totally dug that entire month, it rocked!

  13. I hate to bring this up here but the other thread was locked and there is therefore no way to express displeasure there.

I find the indiscriminate locking of "duplicate" threads to be somewhat ridiculous, with all due respect. I can sort of understand it when someone is going out of control and posting 3-4 threads on the same topic in the same or various forums, but when something like yesterday's thread was locked in the "General Discussions" forum, I do have to question the heavy-handedness of some of the moderating here. Loliteblue was starting off the day and giving some commentary (and welcoming others, of course to chime in) about each of the films being aired on this day of tribute to Tony Curtis. An actor of that stature deserves more than one thread, and while this thread is a great one too, it's not quite the same, IMO. This was more of a general thread, the other was more of a personal impression of each film as it aired. I think that was unfair not only to the OP of that thread, but also to the community here. We're adults, we don't need to have this kind of policing, and why is it that multiple threads can't exist? Is TCM that hard up for bandwidth? I mean really.

I love TCM and the films, and I understand wanting to run an orderly and civil board, but there was absolutely nothing out of control about Loliteblue's thread in the other forum. I'm sorry but that's crazy stuff, and smacks of OVER-moderation.

Here is what Loliteblue wrote in that other thread, in the post just before "Renee" locked it:

"Thanks for letting me share during the 24 hour tribute. The TCM family is the best.I agree with Tony

Curtis it is "Tony Curtis Movies" in all our hearts this tribute day. Thanks to his family and friends

for sharing him with us all these eighty five years through his interviews, films, books. Thanks so

    much!"

Now how did locking that thread contribute in any way to a vibrant, loyal and energetic, enthusiastic community of film lovers? I suggest re-examining priorities.

Ok, off stump and back to your regularly scheduled discussion about Tony Curtis.
