Love, thanks for posting the early lineup for the tribute.
My only wish is that they would have been able to air the Private Screenings, but I guess they had enough films in house to cover the entire 24 hours without inserting the hour long program. I'd love it if they could squeeze that in sometime soon though...really loved watching him in that!

I really dug him in a very little known Bogie flick, STAND-IN, very funny and cool flick!

> Only film I have watched from that day is *THAT WAY WITH WOMEN* absolute fluff, but very much fun, with Sidney Greenstreet as an improbable one-time grease monkey turned auto magnate, and Martha Vickers as his sexy daughter.
Ziggy, I watched this one for a bit and realized it was a remake of THE MILLIONAIRE, a delightful 1931 flick starring George Arliss in the Greenstreet role! I really enjoyed watching Greenstreet do it though, very cool!

I also loved seeing ADVENTURE for the first time, mainly for Gable, but as you mentioned, I also dug Joan Blondell and Thomas Mitchell, two of my faves as well! I thought this was a better film than many on IMDB gave credit for.

I loved his interview with Robert Osborne from a while back, the Private Screenings, loved it! Hope they re-air that with any tribute they might be planning.

It's an awesome film I agree!!

I'm so sorry to have heard this news this morning.

I love your list of faves! That pretty much mirrors my own, though I'd add:
Glenda Farrell
Joan Blondell
Aline McMahon
Bebe Daniels
Alice White
Mae Clarke

Price point was a problem for me....I'd love to get it, but man. Still on my "wish/want list", but future purchase for sure.

Really cool, thanks for sharing that! I agree with you, there needs to be an interview session! I know it costs money to do those, but TCM really needs to not miss out on these opportunities to televise a slice of cinematic history whenever they are available! They are worth every penny and can never be recovered once people pass on...

Laura, I watched it this morning and OMG...yes, I know what you mean! Very moving film! Just the right combination of gangster/crime elements too, as well as Wally Ford as the copper with a heart. Great B film!

Clearskies, I absolutely adore Leslie Howard in THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL, and THE PETRIFIED FOREST. For a while he was my favorite actor and I continue to think that his performances in those two films moves me to intense emotion!

That's true, and I totally grooved to that month! One of my faves who is overdue though for another run at SOTM is Edward G. Robinson! It's been a while!

Love, ISLAND IN THE SKY is a fun B crime/comedy, one that I thoroughly enjoy! I had the pleasure of seeing it a couple times back when I had FMC!
-
I'm digging on him. Got home to the middle of FORT DEFIANCE, that was kind of fun. Then a noir/crime film in NEVER TRUST A GAMBLER. That was very good! Now checking out EMBRACEABLE YOU, with Wally Ford. I also DVR'd HER KIND OF MAN and THAT WAY WITH WOMEN for later on. I'm liking these mostly B films.

I agree, it would be great if TCM would do something to honor Gloria! RIP!

Hi Mary, Welcome to the boards! I love Cagney, his gangster and pre-code films are among my favorites!
-
Oh no, that is horrible! No more new Gangsters Collections??? That stinks! I know that they were retreads of the "Tough Guys" Collections, which were released a few years earlier. Man...c'mon man, we are out here and we will buy!
I didn't notice FIVE STAR FINAL out there, but will look...but for that much $$$?? Man, it's a ripoff, IMO. Bring those prices down!
-
Ok, I finally broke down and got the remaining two I didn't have so far (Vol 1 and 2). Wow! I love how Warner's put in the Warner's Night at the movies, that is sooooo awesome!!!
I hope they will consider making even more, perhaps with some of the lesser known B's? I also just watched a theatrical trailer for FIVE STAR FINAL!! I would love it if Warner's would consider putting that along with some of their other "social comment" films on a series called "Hardhitting" or something like that! That film definitely deserves an all-star treatment with commentary etc!
But back to the sets, they are GREAT and I love them! Amazon has them also and you can get them for fairly decent prices there. The commentaries are awesome!! If you love 30's Gangster films (though they have a few from later than that, but very few), you gotta get these! Totally groove!

1A. Edward G. Robinson
1B. Jimmy Cagney

Hmm, interesting Valentine! I never thought of the impact of WWII on comedy but I think you have an excellent point! I wondered why the screwballs died off, but I also thought they were tied somehow to the 30's sensibility, which is a very interesting one in terms of cinema, IMO!

Arch, thank you for posting this!!!! I totally forgot about this, and tuned in just in time thanks to your post!!! Awesome stuff! Just finished watching it!
Hope you enjoy Hildy this morning, Arch! I totally dug them! And am looking forward to another from the series coming up!

I enjoy this film! I didn't get a chance to watch it Friday but hopefully it will show up again.
