Oh I love it!!!! Pre-code lines are sooooo awesome!!!

  2. I'm on a very limited budget, but giving up things in order to score some of my favorites on DVD. I prefer the full bore treatment with commentaries and extras (particularly grooving to commentaries!), but I understand that the future is probably the DVD-R bare bones, at least for classic and older films. But the prices for that bare bones HAS to come down, man, 19.95 for just a flick, is waaaaaaay too much. I like Love's suggestion, 4 for 19.95, or even 4 for 25 would be a much better deal. I see there are a few out there like that, but they need to do it more. Or at least bring down the individual prices to 9.99.

It's one reason why I haven't yet purchased the latest Noir collection from WB...no commentaries! I'll get it eventually, but it seems a rip-off in a way (as the price is no different from the previous sets).

  3. Getting around to catching the two Hildegard Withers flix that TCM aired in the wee hours this morning....very cool pre-code murder mysteries! Edna and James had great chemistry in these! I love James Gleason in anything!

Watching them in reverse, just started with MURDER ON THE BLACKBOARD! Fun stuff--thanks TCM!!

  4. Wow, lots of very cool stuff this week--missed mentioning some yesterday, but really grooved hard to TOPPER, THE SECRET BEYOND THE DOOR, and especially THE PROWLER!!! But also WAY OUT WEST! And speaking of Laurel and Hardy, two cool LH flix late tonight/early tomorrow:

    A CHUMP AT OXFORD

    SAPS AT SEA

    Rock out

And then a day of Erich Von Stroheim!!! THE MERRY WIDOW, a 4 hour version of GREED, FRIENDS AND LOVERS, THE LOST SQUADRON (yes!!!), THE NORTH STAR, SUNSET BOULEVARD, and FIVE GRAVES TO CAIRO---groove!

A precode treat for Thursday morning: THE LIFE OF JIMMY DOLAN, THE CHIEF, BROADWAY TO HOLLYWOOD, DEATH ON THE DIAMOND (one I'm really looking forward to!!!)

Friday brings us some very groovy crime flix: KID GLOVE KILLER, CONFLICT, THE HOUSE ACROSS THE STREET, THE ARNELO AFFAIR, and OUT OF THE FOG!!

And Saturday morning! Wow! James Gleason and Edna Mae Oliver in two classic pre-code Hildegarde Withers mysteries: THE PENGUIN POOL MURDER and MURDER ON THE BLACKBOARD!!!

TCM is the bomb diggy!!! Thank you for the great films!!

  5. Randy I agree, his voice is awesome, as are his eyes---very penetrating! Sorry you didn't like LOAN SHARK, I really dig that one, I had a little George Raft "fest" this week, re-watched that one, and also THE MAN FROM CAIRO, I agree that is a good one too! Would love to get more Raft films, if only they would release a box set!! Or two! :)

  6. Also released as 'CLUB PARADISE', from Monogram! I bought this Poverty Row Theatre triple set (also has DETECTIVE KITTY O'DAY on it, which I've seen before and like!) through Amazon (very cheap!) and this was on it. Wow, what a downbeat film, but very noir! If you get a chance to catch this little gem, I'd recommend it!

  7. I haven't seen this series in a few years now when TCM first premiered it! I'd love to see these again, please???? Hope to see them all in a block or over a few days time! Warner Baxter, that dude was out of control, and there was just something about this series that gripped me! Hope to see them before TCM loses the rights to the Columbia library, but a box set would be fine and dandy too!

I agree wholeheartedly, natch! If you haven't seen THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN ARM before, you're in for a treat, awesome flick! I've seen BABY DOLL and don't really dig that flick too much. THE MOON IS BLUE is a new one for me.

  9. I like a lot of different genres, but crime/gangster/mystery/noir are probably my faves! I love pre-codes of any variety pretty much but if they have any crime or gangster or pessimistic elements, all the better! I also love sentimental films, but for me the best sentimental films have some degree of darkness or despair in them to make them stronger. For example, love Capra, but take MEET JOHN DOE for example, lots of darkness in that film. IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE is made all the stronger by the dark elements in the film. I love to be moved sentimentally though and I'm a sucker for that, but I'm also a sucker for dark despair, crime, old school gangsters (Cagney, Robinson, et al)! Oh and old school horror too! :) A great blend of horror and crime is the WB THE WALKING DEAD with Karloff!

  10. Love, TCM#1fan, I totally agree with you both about IT ALL CAME TRUE!!! I wish they had considered including it on the new Bogie set, and I wish they had considered including more on there as well! It's one of his best unheralded (except on this board it seems) films, and I dig it HARD!

As for the Archive...hey, I'm glad it's there, and it's awesome to know that some of these films are available, but IMO (and with my budget) I think the price tag is too high. I agree with some comments that suggested that over time the market may drive that price down, IMO, DVD's can be made SO cheaply, they really shouldn't be more than 9.99. Or they could bundle more and come out with mini-sets of 3 or 4 for the 19.99 tag and that would be much better (I know they do this with a few of the films already, or something close to it). If they did that, I'd be nuts and buy a TON! At 19.99...I have to limit my budget and buy none--preferring to get classic films on Amazon at this time. With no extras and DVD-R quality, and many say these are not restored, I think the price should reflect that.

Of course I'd prefer that they be released with all the frills and then I'd save and buy those! Love the commentaries now on many of the box sets, I'm addicted to them!

  11. Love and others, good thoughts, great discussion!!

DETOUR is an interesting film. There are a lot of indications that we may not be able to even believe Tom Neal's character, and even at the end...is that just him imagining what will happen in his paranoid state, or did it really happen? I love this film because it allows for layers of interpretation of what is real and what isn't, and all points in between.

SOMEWHERE IN THE NIGHT would be an AWESOME flick to see on TCM, but FCM does play it fairly frequently (or did last year when I had FCM). It's a good one. I love amnesia films, especially when they are done as well as this one.

  12. While not a huge fan of this series, it would be a hug mistake to not take the opportunity to have the Mick himself available for commentaries on some of them and would attract more attention for a DVD release. I say get it done! I'd even buy it eventually, and I think it would be one of the more popular classic releases!
